Asus P5N7A-VM Overclock

Hi all,

Building a new system for a friend, had some good overclocks with my Quad PC and 2 Dual-Core Media Center's. However, decent mATX mobo's that overclock seem to be few and far between at the moment. I've read a few good reviews of the Asus P5N7A-VM, but am a little unsure as it's based on an nVidia chipset, and had quite a bad experience with an nForce 680i board in the past. I've read about the bad experiences people have had using the Abit F-I90HD, I've built two systems using this board, both with a 500Mhz overclock and no problems. Unfortunately this, and the excellent Asus P5E HDMI are no longer in production, so I thought I'd look to nVidia again.

Here is the build i'm proposing for my friend -

Asus P5N7A-VM
Pentium Dual Core E5200 (2.5Ghz)
OCZ PC2 6400 2GB Memory Kit (OCZ2P800R22GK) 4-4-4-15 Timings
Antec NSK2480 with 380W Antec PSU

He's looking to cut corners wherever possible, hence my recommendation of a case with a decent PSU included. He has a HDD of his own already, the RAM is mine from a previous build (otherwise I'd look to some Corsair Dominator that serves me well in my PC) plus a DVD Burner I have from another old build, and an Arctic Cooling Freezer Pro 7 (Altho I have a suspicion these are too tall for this Antec case and I'll need to go with something like the ZEROtherm CF900).

Any suggestions or thoughts you can offer would be greatly appreciated.

I wouldn't go with that mobo. Looking at the P5N7A-VM thread here, it looks like the P5N7A-VM's northbridge gets pretty hot while watching HD content.

So might not be a good idea to overclock that mobo.

Oh and the AC7Pro is too tall for the NSK2480. This HSF will fit and was basically made for the NSk2480:

Hey Danny, thanks for getting back to me

I'll keep an eye on the NB if I do O/C.

I looked at the Gigabyte board, price was higher then my friend was willing to go (I find it hard to believe theres nothing as clockable as the F-I90HD at a similar price, 18 months later).

I thought the AC7Pro might be too tall, I was considering the ZEROtherm CF900. I have an Antec Fusion myself and have used this same cooler, but if the Scythe is a better fit I'll go with that.
 
Just purchased a Scythe Mini Ninja for £30, gonna replace the 80mm fan with a 92mm asetek for £5, and got a 40mm fan for the NB heatsink. Picked up some AC MX-2 as well.
