Asus P5E-VM HDMI: best matx ever?

My P5E-VM HDMI is working great with a Q6600 and 2x1 gigs of Crucial Ballistix :D. The only problem I'm having now is there's no linux support for the onboard LAN, since it's just to new.

I haven't seen this addressed. I'm thinking of getting a new sound card. Does a Xonar D2X fit in the pci-e x1 slot behind the video card? Or does it run into the memory slots?

This P5E-VM HDMI clocks my X3350 better than my DFI LP LT X38-T2R

yes , same chassis as the coolermaster elite 340: ultima90 & utra120 fit perfectly....

any clues why i cant go up to FSB 500 with my Nvidia 9800GX2 gfx card installed?
with my Nvidia 6800 it works perfect.
could it be that i need more volt to the North bridge with the 9800GX2?
(see previous post about my system setup )

Edit: here are some pics with both the noctua and 9800gx2 cards for those who wonder if it fits :D

Looking great Lars_L.

We have almost the same configuration.
I'm using the E8400 with the same cooler, and Crucial Ballistix PC8500 RAM.
Currently my CPU is running 3.6 GHz, and is under load not over 36-37°C
It's a great system. To cool the NZXT Rouge and the Thermalright, I've found some 120 mm from Nanoxia.

BTW. what is you're oppinion on the NZXT Rouge so far?

The case is a bit nasty to work with, mainly all the screws that hold the side panels. Also the front panel has to be removed to unscrew the drive bay covers. Also the screws are of rather cheap quality and grind out easily.

But other than that, its bloody awesome :)

Can anyone give me a few tips what settings to try next? I'm stuck at 3.4ghz on my 8400, temps are all pretty low (36c idle/52c heavy load). I was under the impression that this board + any of the c2d/c2q was a pretty easy OC to 400mhz bus (meaning no voltage changes, etc). As you can see in the screens the RAM runs just fine at 912 so I don't think I'm limited in that regard. I've tried an 8400, and a 6550 and both tapped out at 385ish so I'm thinking it has something to do with the board rather than the chips.

I have disabled (I think) onboard video.

If anyone out there can take a look at my BIOS screen settings and recommend some things to try I would appreciate it greatly. I am running BIOS version 0503.

Please make a sig with your system spec's. We need to know what you got under the hood before someone can give you good advice.:)

Here's my spec (in sig too)

asus p5e-vm hdmi
xeon e3110 @ 3.4ghz
patriot 2gb*2 5-5-5-15 @ 2.10v 780mhz
MSI 512mb 9600gt (stock)

I had the same problem.... I lowered the RAM Freq. to 800, and it worked. I'll post my settings when I get home.... some time tonight (European time).

are at least four of your SATA ports usable with a 9800 GX2?

2 ports works without any problems, but i think that you will have to use L shaped SATA connectors if you want to use the rest of them.
for example port 1-4 use L shaped connectors and port 5-6 use _| shaped connectors(inverted L shape, dont know if that exist?)

I can check when i get home. :)

many thanks, i need at least 4.

presumably i would have the same problem with a 9800 GTX?

For some reason, these boards really fly with 2 gb's (2 x 1gb) of ram. I've tested my P5E-VM HDMI with 2x2gb and 4x1gb sets of ram and my 500 FSB went bye bye.. If I ran 4gb's, I was lucky to hit 375 FSB.. I tried ALL sorts of different voltage tweaks and settings but it was a no go.. the only thing I can think of is the added stress on the bus / memory controller causes the board to greatly reduce its FSB output.

I'm still stumped. During my testing, I removed the ram and popped the 2 x 1gb set of ram back in and viola... 500+ FSB. ....Weird!

almost all boards that i know of only clock well when no more than 2 sticks are used.

well my 4*1gig setup worked well using 500FSB*8.

but when i installed my 9800GX i cant go up to 500FSB anymore, so im running 450*9 instead.

to anyone who has got a 9800 GTX on this board:

how many SATA ports are you able to use?

Well, I can definitely try 2 x 1gb sticks. Even if it doesn't work I can probably return the memory to the store. I have 2 * 2gb sticks now, the memory doesn't seem to have any issues running at 800mhz + but I definitely have some kind of FSB issue.

What is weird is that I go up to 380mhz fsb, then everything is fine. If I go to 381 or more, when I start Windows it takes about twice as long as usual, then when I get to the logon screen there are some graphical glitches.

I am not using onboard video at all, so I am not understanding where these glitches are coming from. PCI-e bus is locked to 100mhz.

One thing that may be a problem, but I am not sure of this - the graphics card came with a molex - 6 pin power adaptor. I isolated a 12v rail and plugged the molex adapter into the card when I first installed it, but the system refused to boot with the adapter plugged in. When I removed the power plug from the card it started booting again. I wasn't sure if that was normal or not? Is the aux power only needed in an SLI situation?

I'm running at 400fsb and haven't tried 500fsb. I am running 2x2gb sticks of ram though, so I am curious about issues using 4gb+ ram. I was leaving upgrade path to 8gb open.

One thing - have you tried running two ram sticks in the non-dual/pair slots in relation to each other? Just curious.

Just a quick update on my issue...

It was indeed a bad motherboard. Got the RMA today, plugged everything in (E3110, 4GB Corsair C5, 640GB WD) and it fired right up. :) Very happy with the new rig. Tempting to keep it for myself, even though I'm building it for a family member ;)

Can anyone else comment if you have tried to connect to a gigabit switch using the atheros on board lan? If it works what driver version/settings are you using? No matter the driver version I have tried, if I set it to 1000 or auto it can't connect, have to manually set it to 100.

Thanks!

Thank you. I realized I'm an idiot and that it wasn't connected to the right switch :D

I had a few crashes that I suspected were video card related. I did some reading and it seems that 9600gt's (like my factory overclocked PaLiT 9600gt) overclock the pci-e bus by 25 Mhz by default. I had my manual overclocking of my motherboard settings at 100 for the pci-e bus. Today I tried setting it to 125 and 120 but it wouldn't boot on either of those, nor would it boot with the pci-e bus set to auto (I'm running my cpu core voltage pretty high at 1.48 - 1.50v, 400MHz bus, 10x multiplier for 4ghz on a QX9650). Right now I'm running the pci-e at 105 and it seems stable, maybe more stable.

Another problem I had was ntune crashed after I installed it and tried to select one of the headings today. That was before I turned the pci-e bus up to 105. Could just be buggy drivers I don't know. I'm also running vista 64bit by the way.

Is anyone else overclocking this motherboard with a 9600gt that is factory overclocked? I'm curious what my best settings would be. It seems stable at 105.

Has anyone got this board working with the Intel e8400? And if you have can you post your Motherboard revision. I cannot get mine to POST but it works with my P4 630.

I think pvhk did some testing with this mobo and the E8400 and posted results. Go back and read through the thread.

Sorry about the post, people have gotten it working. I must have a bad CPU then. Just my luck.

This is old but I've been running this board with an X-Fi Platinum since the day I recieved it. I've had no issues what so ever. I'm not on my computer, I'm on a laptop so I can't check the bios version but I believe it is the 0301.

yo guys well i got everything finally running with q6700 / cnps 8700nt / gainward 8800gt gs in a thermaltake lanbox but man my cpu gets freaking hot according CPUID hardware monitor its idle 40C and under full load 60C but according to the asus ai suite its idle 29 and under load 45C which one do i trust more ?? ambient temprature around the caus is 29 my videocard max is 55C temprutres close to processor indicates 45C ... btw any suggestions if its 60C to coll it down more ??
