ASUS P5DG2 - IDE problems!

I can't get the IDE devices set up right on this mobo - ASUS P5DG2 "deluxe".

I have two IDE devices: A DVD and Samsung HDD.

I don't know if this the way it should be, but on the Main Bios Screen, there is list of drives beginning with a Primary IDE Master & Slave, but then it jumps to the Third IDE Master, forth & so on. There is no secondary on the list. My hard disk is connected to the secondary connector on the mobo, and so it is not in the list.

I had to connect my DVD to the primary, otherwise I couldn't get Windows to load. This is the only device shown in this list.

In the Boot Menu of BIOS, I can see a both IDE devices by name - both the HDD and the DVD.

When I try to install windows, all the stuff loads into the Memory, and then it says it can't find any hard disks.
 
Sounds like your Secondary IDE controller is bad. You can try connecting your DVD and HDD to the same IDE cable in a master/slave series to see if it works on the Primary IDE channel.
 
connect hd as master on primary ide port with its own cable.
connect dvd as master on secondary ide port with its own cable.

your hard drive should be the c: drive on your primary ide controller port. windows looks here for bootable system drive.

Thanks, but it doesn't work on these mobos. The secondary IDE controller is missing - and it seems to be like this on other ASUS boards in the series (P5GD series). This is something to do with IDE configuration on these boards. It's stupid.

On the mobo, there are three 40 pin ATA IDE connectors. A single one, called PRI_IDE1. Then there is a pair, called PRI_RAID1, SEC_RAID1.

These are the only ATA IDE connectors. The only one I can boot from is the PRI_IDE1.The others are not seen. This means if I want to boot from the CD, to install Windows, I must connect the DVD drive to the PRI_IDE1 connector.

Then the is nowhere to connect the ATA drives. I could do it if I bought SATA drives with SATA connectors - but I have two good, new ATA drves I want to use.
 
Ok so if I understand, you have the DVD on the PRI1, and the HD on the PRI_RAID1? If this is the case, then I believe you need to load the raid drivers durring the OS install (it will say hit F6 to install drivers) from a floppy. You may need to configure the raid controller before the OS install for the single drive. It sounds like the OS does not recognize the controller your HD is on.

Yes - DVD on the PRI1, HDD on PRI_RAID1. Actually I have two HDDs: One on PRI_RAID1 and the other on SEC_RAID1.

I don't want to use the RAID capability on these. One HDD will be for the OS and software installation, the other HDD will be a scratch disk for graphics, sound and video work.

Yup, there certainly was an option for installing the RAID drivers by hitting F6. As to configuring the raid controller beforehand - there's no way of doing that with the controls I have in the BIOS. I can set it to IDE mode and then that's it, but it still doesn't recognise it.

Anyway, thanks once again. I'll try out what you say. Next time I'll just get SATA HDDs!!
 
OK... Someone really needs to read the manual for their MB!!! Just because I'm really board here at work I DL'd the manual for your board.. in chapter 5 it tells you exactly what to do.. CTRL+F gets you into the raid config just after post. there are some things that need to be set in the main bios as well though. In the raid setup you want to set it to JBOD Just a Bunch Of Disks. If you don't have the manual.. get it here MANUAL

I think I set all the stuff in the main BIOS - but I missed the JBOD thing.
 
No I'm not a member.. never heard of it.. The Raid type:JBOD part is in the raid config bios that should flash up just after the system posts.
