I'm about ready to order the ASUS G1S-B2. It seems like one of the best 15" laptops for gaming and for the money.

Looking at newegg now, anyone have any suggestions?

There's also excalibur pc and gentech. I ordered my V1S from gentech. I think they were pretty good.

Thanks for the reply, newegg has been really good to me so far so I will probably stick with them.

I would like to hear from someone who owns one of these. Or if anyone else has suggestions as this will be my first laptop purchase and I need to be able to play cod4 on it :)

Yikes! It's $1850 on Newegg and you're only getting a 8600M GT.

I would suggest you look at Dell's XPS lineup (M1530) and use a coupon. It should be less than $1800 and I think with that configuration, you should be able to get a T9300.

Or you could try the ASUS G Series G1S-B1. Basically the same thing but with 2GB of ram and $300 cheaper.

I have the G1S-B2 and paid $1800 for it from Gentech in mid Dec. I got an extra battery for mine and the free Steelsound 5HV2 headphones (retail for $99) as well. I think it was worth it over the B1 since it has a better harddrive and the 3 gigs of ram definitely is needed. I have almost all the bloatware removed and most services killed and I still have 1.4GB loaded into memory when Vista starts. Everything opens fast as hell though and gaming is fine so no complaints.

A friend of mine at work just ordered the G2S-K1 (AMD proc and ATI card) from newegg for $1800 and it's sweet too. The display is nice since it's 17" but I an 8lbs notebook in the G1S is plenty for me. He recieved his and it ran like crap so Newegg sent him another one last week and the difference was night and day.

I just bought COD4 for my G1S last week. I set it at max at native res (1680x1050) and got only about 25-30 FPS using Fraps. It was playable but the visual lag drove me nuts. I lowered it to 1280x720, and unchecked a few other options I really didn't need and got a reasonable 80 FPS. :D It still looks gorgeous.

FYI, I play Bioshock and Crysis at the same res on my G1S with Bioshock settings all maxed save one or two options. Crysis runs at 30-40 FPS with everything on medium and physics set to high. I run Oblivion nearly maxed out and all my Steam games, Stalker, Company of Heroes, and Sins of a Solar Empire maxed.

Asus has a great warranty as well.

Look around here as well for some great info.

Great replies, much appreciated. I just cant find a 15" anywhere with 8800M GTS 512 like the one found in the Gateway FX 17" or Dell M17XX 17". If anyone knows where I can get one please shout but it looks like the Asus is it.

Would a similar xps 15" be a better purchase? Slot loader / Blu ray.

@ Sobek: In graphics options for COD4, turn off shadows and you will see a nice increase in FPS, which plays better at higher resolutions and smoother in heavy firefights.

Already did. It's one of the "other" options I mentioned I killed. It's part of the reason my FPS went from 30 to 80 other than just the change in res.

I also forgot to mention it but the 8600GT has DDR3 ram in the G1S that isn't found in other notebooks with the 8600GT.

Is the GDDR3 going to make much difference in performance? The Dell is looking good with a slot load bluray burner but it's GDDR2.

btw - thx for the info, here is a good cod4 server:
Server Name 24/7 OFC No MRTY/Toobs
Server IP 69.28.221.8:29460

IIRC, the DDR3 version is about 5% faster (you might have to check on that.)

I guess I forgot to say, I believe this notebook comes with 3 years of local warranty, 2 years of global warranty, and 1 year of accidentally warranty (at least, my V1S did, but I think all ASUS notebooks carry the same warranty.)

I think the GDDR3 versions are 15-25% faster. But I think a lot of it has to do with 'working' drivers. Drivers make a big difference.. ;)

SolidBladez, I believe you are correct about the DDR3 vs DDR2 for the 8600GT. I seem to remember reading it somewhere on the notebookreview forums back in Dec when I was researching to buy my G1S.

zoku88, I also belive you are correct about the warranty as well. I'm too lazy to check. I find the accidental warranty to be fucking awesome. One year coverage (must register after buying notebook) of Spills, Drops, Surge, and Fire is great. It's nice to know I can get a new notebook after I spill drink on my notebook causing a power surge that starts a fire and to put it out I drop it to the ground. :p

The G1S-B2 is currently $1600 at gentech including the $150 MIR.

Also, if you're curious, here is the page with my G1S pictures and Acee's, who bought his after trying to decide over it or the Macbook Pro.

Newegg says that both the B1 and B2 have GDDR3 on the 8600s. I cant find a difference between the two, certainly nothing to warrant a 300 dollar price difference. Can someone explain that to me? I dont think a gig of system ram warrants that either.

I was stating that the DDR3 ram is found mostly on Asus's 8600GT's compared to say the ones in Dell. You'd be fine with the G1S-B1 but I would definitely order a 2gig stick of ram and swap it with one of the 1gig ones. I just looked on newegg at the B1 and also can't see the justification to spend $300 more on the B2. I only got it because of the deal going on at the the time over the B1.

Something else you may want to know is that the 200gig harddrive has 3 partitions on it. The Vista partition is 111GB, the other for Data is 66Gb, and the third is a recovery partition you can only see in the BIOS. The 111GB isn't a lot for games (Steam takes up 20GB). I've had to copy a few of my game folders over to a portable drive and then delete them off my main just to install COD4 and Sins of a Solar Empire. I can always copy them back over once I get tired of another game I'm playing. It's just something to keep in mind due to the limited partition space.

Doesn't the B2 use the T7700 instead of the T7500 as well? I don't remember off of the top of my head.

I know it's not really important if you're primarily gaming, but for completeness I'd add that I stuck Ubuntu (7.10) on mine just for fun when I got it (and before I had loads of stuff installed that I didn't want to risk losing) and it worked out really well. Cam, wireless, sound etc all working fine, even the oled screen. I've hardly touched vista since I got it, although I kept it on there for what little gaming I do do on it.
If I hadn't gone with linux that I would have probably reinstalled vista from scratch because it comes with sooo much crap installed, it runs like a dog out of the box.
Personally I was surprised how poor the 8600 is even though I knew it had a decidedly mediocre reputation. If it had something a bit juicier in it, it would be just about my ideal laptop. Looks nice, good spec, good price, nice high-res screen *shrug* And a decent bag and a (rebadged) logitech mouse which is nice.

And I believe you have to register in 30 days or something to get the full warranty cover (like with evga graphics cards), just as a warning.

If I was willing to spend $1800 on that Asus I have no idea whats stopping you from getting the m15x from Alienware....... 15" and you at least have an upgrade path to the 8800GTX from the 8600GT. Just a consideration!
