Hello... i just bought a used asus 4870 everything looked fine.. so i took it home installed it... but i noticed the fan never turns on.while i was installing the drivers...it got quite hot so i turned off the computer... waited 15 mins turned it on again.. in ATI's control panel.. it even saids fan speed 0% i tried changing the settings but it never turns on.. said the temp was around 85C so i just turned the computer off and took the card out... did i just buy someone's problem is there anything i can do? it's an 'EAH4870" model from asus. Can I even RMA this? it's not like i have a reciept, box or anything... can I buy an aftermarket heatsink/fan ?? Thanks for the help :)

Hello

I'm new to these forums and I decided to register after a Google search for that particular card. I've been reading stuff on these forums for a while though.

It looks like you bought someone else's problem. It seems that the EAH4870 has a problem where the fan dies after a period of time. Mine stopped spinning after 6 months, I'm on my 2nd RMA, 3rd card from Newegg.

There is no fix that I am aware of. I have bought a replacement 4870 with a reference cooler (not the one on the ASUS brand) from HIS.

I want to know if change the heatsink/fan on the EAH4870 will make a difference or if it's a problem with the actual PCB. I don't know much about these things and I've never changed the cooler before.

Sorry for bringing up an old topic, I would really just like a solution to this problem. I'm not gonna keep going back and forth with RMA's.

OP man that sucks. my guess is the person that sold it to you screwed you. from what the other guy said if they had fan problems then this seller new that and burned u. i guess you could try some aftermarked cooler just to see, and if you want to spend more money on a chance. boy i would be mad at that guy

OP here it's ok... it's been 5 months then.. the card was still under warranty so i RMA it back to asus and they sent me back the 1gb DK so i'm quite happy with it i got away with a 4870 1gb for real cheap
