Assess this build please...

Not that good:
- More than likely that new game will benefit immensely from a quad-core CPU
- That PSU is a total POS
- Get 4 sticks of that RAM is a bad idea considering that you can get the same amount of RAM with just two sticks for less money:
$80 - G.Skill Value Series F3-10600CL9D-8GBNT 2 x 4GB DDR3 1333 RAM

Well I saw the questionnaire, but I assumed that was for first-timers who had no idea what they were looking for. I just wanted an assessment of a build I had already put together.

As far as I am aware no game (including Skyrim) can adequately take advantage of multi-threading to make any noticeable difference in performance. I see no reason to go to a quad core as this will not be used for photoshop, premiere, 3dsmax, or any other number-crunching application that would really take advantage of the additional cores.

I have no idea what is wrong with the PSU I picked out. It's not going to be a cross fire system, and 600watt should be plenty. Also, Thermaltake PSUs have always been reliable for me.

I will take your suggestion on the RAM though.

Anyway, the person I am building this for is not an enthusiast, will not be overclocking, and will not need crossfire/sli.

Why bother asking for help if your not going to take it..

ALLOT of games do take advantage of more then 2 cores. While alot dont use the 4th, Its still not a bad ideal to have. That being said This combo gains a few hundred more Mhz & an extra core for 15 bucks. Both will help with gaming. Definitely worth it, not to mention a better chipset then your original. For the PSU I would go with This. Its much better in terms of quality then your original. Video card is also not a good buy. The 5870's are outclassed & out priced by current gen. Either a 6870 or a 6950 are better for the money, whether you want to save a few bucks or spend a few more. Case wise I am going to recommend a different one jsut because I recomended a mATX mobo & there is no point in wasting the extra space. This with an extra 120mm fan.

And we ask everyone to answer those questions when asking for help.

The problem here is that there are some games out there right now that scale very well with more physical cores. Very soon, there will be games that will actually require a quad-core just to even run at all.

Not all "600W" PSUs are equal. In fact, a lot of so-called "600W" PSUs, even from big names such as Thermaltake, cannot provide anywhere close to their stated wattages without having ripple or DC regulation way out of spec or (worse) blowing themselves up! And when a PSU blows up or goes out of spec, it can kill some or all of your system's major components. In the case of the TR2 600W, it cannot realistically deliver more than 400W to 450W without going cuckoo in some way. And the TR2 600 is just the kind of PSU that can kill some of that system's major components even if it doesn't blow itself up -- in other words, it is one of those "component-killing" PSUs. That alone effectively makes that PSU about 50% more expensive than it's really worth, even at its current street price.

That is the problem right there. The person you are building this for you are giving them really no good quality parts at all. your wasting their money & some what our time. You asked for our Crit so they gave you the answer & your trying hard in your mind to dismiss what we are telling you.

That build isnt that great. Take Danny & Bastages advice.

That is False. Most game now a days are using up to 4 cores & BattleField BC2 is even using 6 cores. More Cores DOES make a difference.

I cannot recommend the AAKS due to the fact that I had 2 of them go bad on me since 10-17-2010. The Samsung F3 1TB & 500 are VERY fast Mech drives. There is no need to go over 8GB of ram for gaming

+1 to this..

Also what resolution monitor is being used. Reason is a 6870, could be not enough, or way overkill..

I changed the build up alittle. if you look above now I fit in a 4 core CPU for a tad bit more. The video card also has a $20.00 Mail-in Rebate Card

Not a bad move, but the extra core for 33 bucks may not be worth it. Especially if the Game in question doesn't take advantage of the 4th core since its 300 Mhz slower.

true either of my builds will work. Ops choice really. He might even disregard what we say completely and order his build no matter what.

Im not sure if Skyrim would benefit from Quad or not.
