I was wondering about if the [H] folding team would like a 2003 AS/400 on their side... about how much processing power would that generate?

we could prob only run 8 clients b/c that is the max machine id's we can get

 
i might be able to get this sucker in a month or two... I work for a bank and we actualy have two that we aren't using right now... we can't do anything with it because when a new version of our software comes out it will only support the newest one. ( i've actually thought of using it as an extremely powerful server for my college dorm room but thought this would be a better use for it.

there are ways around this for both Linux and Windows

you can actually partition the machine! you can partition it into 3-4-5 servers...

EDIT- partitioning the processors... not just the drives
 
My only concern would be are they x86 compatible. The documentation I've found seems to hint that they are PPC which Stanford doesn't have Win or Linux clients for.

If its x86 though, that would be a flat out evil box to have on your side. :D

Do mainframe-type computers have what it takes to be good folders? I know nothing about architecture and so forth, but I'm just wondering since F@H is optimized for x86, would the mainframe type processors do well?

No.

The processors on midrange servers are no match whatsoever for modern Opterons and P4's at raw calculating power. A Sempron 2100+ would likely humiliate this AS/400. These things are designed to move mountains of data around as quickly as possible, not line up and perform as many calculations and operations per second as possible. There's incidentally a bit of a good explanation up at Anandtech today in their evaluation of the new Sun T1 chips.
 
well they actually have it stuck out in a warehouse right now... not even using it...

Yeah, it should LPAR just fine. I believe it was said that it's not being used for anything. If so, there's a good chance no one would miss the loss of some resources to make an LPAR to install PPC Linux ;)

It's Power PC processors, though.
