for spending $200-300... some... $400-500 dollars on video cards or...
and $100-300 dollars on cpus.... or..
$100-200 on new m/bs ... or...
$100-200 on new/more rams...

just for new games?!?!?!?! ex. Doom3??

I was blowing up zombies and and running away from them... and hearing weird noises...
then I realized I upgraded just for this game... and others...... and also realizing that I am crazy... for spending so much...

I for one... upgraded many times.. over the years... and over the years... spent way too much..

so conclusion... do you think WE ARE CRAZY???

edit -> flamecutoffs on -> check, God mode ON

It's called Hardcore Gamers.

If you got money, and like buying gadgets, it is not crazy.

If you consider yourself crazy for buying a whatever card, RMA it and go get a pizza.

Seriously.

/thread.

Well it's a hobby and I enjoy it so I don't think I'm crazy for spending a lot of money on it.

same with me, i do it more for the hobby side of things than the games. Sure I love playing games at high settings, but I love building comptuers and contstantly tweaking my parts even more....the price you pay to have fun

nope not crazy...

as long as you can pay the bills and feed ur kids first you can spend the money on whatever you want and no one should judge you for it...

if you get a kick out of it then kudos to you.

Only about as mad as the people who Mod honda civics and put Neon lights all over them and chuck a supercharger on them EXT :p
Last i looked We were at the [H] forum The forum hasnt been invented yet :p

I'd say someone is crazy if they buy a GT for the sole purpose of doom 3 ;) by all accounts it's pretty lame at older games....

We are not all crazy here, just the people who put together entire posts using 3 or 4 periods to continually denote pauses. I have found they are the ones that have a problem differentiating forum posts and speaking in real life. The rest of us like spending money on toys.

I like spending money on new and faster stuff for my big Nintendo. That's really what my computer is. That and a net surfing tool.

Besides games look so much better on PC and with a mouse/keyboard you way better control than any joystick or button controller.

Well with the price of Viagra these days, a 500 dollar video card is a small price to pay to be {H  :D }ard

Whats more crazy is all these people I see spending thousands of dollars on car stereo and rims/tires to put them on a crap 500.00 dollar car. Thats just plain ignorance.

its all about money/time spent.

you goto a movie, and spend $5.00 for 3 hours. $1.33/hour value
you buy doom for $50 and play for 25 hours $2/hr value (assumming you only play one time)
goto bar spend $40 in booze for 4 hours. $10/hr value + hangover

how many hours of fun do we get out of our computers? I work on mine (it also makes me money) and I play on it. I get about 4-12 hours per day out of it. over the years, I can't imagine how much money ive made and how much fun I have had.

crazy? probably. but it makes a living and is entertainment.
i try to not ride the bleeding edge, but I paid $400 for my 6800gt, and im happier with it than I was with my $250 9800 Pro

Here is how prices go with my limits:

Case >$100
Power Supply >$50
Motherboard ~$100
Processor >$200
Memory >$150
Video Card >$300

All of my parts listed fell under those categories... the GeForce 6800 GT did because I got in on the CompUSA deal.

there are a lot of people that blow more on drinks in one month than you do on your entire system. now that kills your brain cells too. sure, it would be nice if we could all be workaholic robots or at least "normal" people with "normal" hobbies... oh wait, no it wouldn't.

most people who know nothing will buy dells for $3,000 and not care.
spending what we spend on comps isint really too bad if you think about it.

Here is how I see it...

Computers and games are my hobby. With three kids and a wife that works nights you need something to keep you occupied. Tv and the sat dish get old fast but interaction with others via online games is a nice change. Playing high quality games that look great add to a more enjoyable experience.

As you can see from my sig I do not have the most up to date system but it still manages to play Doom 3 ok. I never buy a card (or any part) to just play a single game. I think most of us look at what games will be coming out and then make an make an informed purchase that will last for a period of time.

Crazy is spending 100 a week on booze or porn sites. Crazy is buying a pair of jeans with someones name on it that you have been informed is "cool". Not carzy is spending money on a purchase (ok the jeans count if your into that) that you derive enjoyment from over a period of time.

On the whole arguement of people buying new stuff, just for one game, that is almost never teh case. Take a 6800GT right now, most people are buying them for doom3. However, I doubt then plan on playing doom3 and ditching the card. There looking into the future and sayiing hey, this card runs doom 3 great, should be good for games that come out later. So, just being the card is being baught with a specific game in mind doesnt mean its being baught specificlly for that game (if that makes any sence)

some people spend that much on car parts or paint ball etc.. for alot of the hardcore gamers its a hobby to them. and like any hobby you put money into it.
also since i dont drink or smoke i can afford a new card every six months.

Hey... stop ranking on us alchies ok!? :D I probably spend 100 bucks on booze and dont have qualms about spending money on my PC. Guess I should be committed :(

It's not crazy if you enjoy your purchase. If you don't enjoy your purchase then you'll be unhappy.
Just make sure you know what's right for you.

By my sig you can tell I don't spend wads of cash on my computer. But you can probably tell I listen to a lot of music as my speakers cost about as much as my ram. Not to mention Sennheiser branded headphones.

i wasnt ranking on you but i just love the post about how people complain how other people can afford highend video cards etc. i have friend in town that doesnt understand how i can afford it but then again he smokes and spends at least 100 bucks every week or so goign out to the bars.

i mean come on how can peopel spend 500 bucks on magic the gahtering cards. everyone is different and has there own hobby. if you dont game that often then these highend cards are not for you.

Exactly Filter

I can afford keeping my pc semi up to date because I don't do a lot of other thing's that don't intrest me. I don't go to movies because I am just not a big movie person. I don't eat out much because I prefer my own cooking. I don't waste money on drugs or booze. I don't collect anything other then the odd dvd.

Keeping my computer up to date and playing games is my hobby. It is what I enjoy.

I mean my sister has a huge HDTV, insane dvd collection, top of the line surround sound sytem and spent enough money I could buy 5 pcs. She loves movies. So what?

Do what you enjoy. It's not crazy

sure im crazy,
but when i ask my other peers what did they do all summer during the DAY , the usual reposnse would be " i sat at home all day watchin MTV and uhhh some movies " , i tell them i "learned about 10 new things about my hobby, i read teh news on news.google.com , i watched some MTV on my second monitor (dually mon w/ AIW card) , i helped a bunch of people on my message boards, and chat with some friends, then found new ways to make money :)"

so who had a more productive day;)?

Well I just recently purchased the following:

6800 Ultra ($590)
Athlon 64 3400+ Clawhammer ($300)
1 Gig of OCZ 3700 EB ($330)
K8N Neo Platinum ($125)
CPU Heatsink/fan/AS5 ($60)

So am I crazy !!!!!!!!!!!!

Hell yea but I don't care coz life is short and then you die.

So enjoy it while you can.

I'd rather have fun and die with all my credit cards maxed out than be frugal and miserly and not had fun in life :D

When you're dead, you can forget about paying your bills :p

P.S. I'm also $10,000 in credit card debt - not too bad, huh?

*Snicker* This is nothing. You should try HIFI audiophil stuff like Krell, Wadia, and Wilson.

My parents say i'm crazy with my comp. I say, I can just do what the other kids in my grade do: go out every day, booze up and puke, smoke dro and end up in a dumpster. (moscow, life here's different)...

Comps are a hobby, ways of interacting with people and improving your knowledge on the most revolutionary invention to date. And you can feel clever while doing it. Plus all the fun.

Face it, for $2000 you can build a killer rig that will last you more than 2 years.
Or, you can have yourself about two weeks of the alternate teen lifestyle.

It's not a question of if we're crazy,as long as we no we aren't crazy is what really matters :D

I'd say I am crazy, but it's no more crazy than putting the money into my car stereo or gasp girls.

It's unfortunate that my time to rebuild happened during the Doom craze but I recently sold my old computer and needed to rebuild a new one.

Now the 6800 case which I have seen mentioned before is that it's just not a card for Doom but a card that at it's expensive price would appear to be able to handle future games better than it's counterparts. There will be many games based off the Doom engine and I tend to enjoy those games so buying a 6800 for myself would allow me to play those games.

Why would you want to put down 400 dollars on a card that doesn't perform as well as another one? If you are willing to bet your bottom dollar on the faith of a company then that is your perrogative. Video cards will falter (look at the previous Nvidia set) and as a consumer I will buy what appears to be the best buy that is out now.

Now is it crazy to spend that much just for a video card. Heck yes. But you know what. They wouldn't be charging these outrageous prices if people weren't willing to pay for them. If people working at retail stores are buying them for around 310 from the 400 sticker price we can only imagine what the true cost of one of these cards are.

got doom 3 last week ... realized some new hardware would make the game experience that much more intense. now i've bought the following:

evga 6800gt - $424
creative audigy 2 zs gamer - $80 (after rebates)
total - $524 !

and i want to upgrade my speakers, may spend as much as $250 on that (or as little as $50, still haven't decided).

this also lead me to go ahead with a long-planned upgrade of my kvm to a usb model, which also necesitates a new usb keyboard:

keyboard - $20
usb kvm - $96
total - $116

grand total - $690 - $890

of course, i'll be able to ebay the old hardware i'm replacing, probably get around $200 for it.

net total - $490 - $690

am i crazy? no. for starters i'll enjoy these new components not just playing d3 but doing everything else on my pc. i'll also enjoy a bunch of other games and apps that are bundled with the hardward. and this will be my only hardware upgrade for the year - not too bad considering it will keep my machine on the leading edge of performance pc's (my cpu is a p4 2.6c oc'ed to 3.2, running with 1gb of corsair xms ram at 2-3-3-3-7). finally, after denying myself toys for years 'cause i couldn't afford 'em, i'm finally at an income level where i can splurge sometimes. so what the hell - i think i've earned it!!

that's my two bits.

I must admit I'm crazy. I don't have a family, but I had a filling fall out this month and I got a 6800GT instead of going to the dentist. I've been thinking of using some expoxy based bondo to fill the tooth :D

I told a co-worker I spent $630 canadian on a 6800GT and she thought I was crazy. Then she tells me later that she spent $300 for supper with her boy friend... And I'm crazy I guess :)

I'm going to get much more enjoyment out of my 6800GT then a good supper.
