Are we all doing it wrong... fans + HDDs?

Yes I love taking these out of old broken hard drives and throwing them at things!
 
They are very much resistive to outter electromagnetic fields, even in vehicles such as LRV or trolleybus which have enough strong electromagnetic field to format diskettes, nothing will happen to a regular HD, even not during using.
What is dangerous and can cause malfunction or data loss are removed magnets from old disks, if you pull it out, its field become uncontrolled so don't come with it close to any computer or you will damage the storage inside.

try the ones out of the olde double height 10k scsi drives :) they are some big suckers, having one on each side of my shirt and they clamped together, ripped my shirt where they met!

Trolleybus is bus powered with overhead lines and using electricity to drive.
LRV(light rail vehicle/tram) is lighter railroad vehicle commonly used in urban public transporation.

The only way I could see a fan damaging a drive is if it is faulty and vibrating hard enough to cause disk errors. Drives are far more succeptable to vibrations before EMI in everyday situations.
 
Interesting. I dont know if weak magnetic fields affects the disks, but strong magnetic fields do affect disks. It seems reasonable that weak fields also affect disks.

It is also well known that loud sounds do affect disks, causing them to vibrate. Here is a short video with one guy screaming at a disk, and Solaris + DTrace immediately detects disturbances. So, no loud sound close to the disks. And definitely vibration damping

Very interesting video.

It would be interesting to bring a magnetic to the Oracle file server used in the video, and see if DTrace detects disturbances.
