My buddy just got a Dell MX16 with a good gaming chip Ati Radeon HD 5730 and wanted some help updating it. So I was helping him out and I could only download the latest CCC 10.8 from Ati but no drivers. His current drivers are from Dell and they're from January of this year 8.692.1. That seems pretty out of date to me.

I was just wondering if all mobile graphics drivers are that out of date or is there something that causes them to be that way that I don't know about?

laptop vendors actually do the ati driver roll outs so yeah there are usually out of date, sometimes badly

this offers a explanation why and a workaround to use up to date drivers http://www.hardwareheaven.com/modtool.php

Thanks for the info. I knew something was weird as normally Ati isn't THAT out of date.

So I followed the link to the following forum and saw this links to 10.6 would I be correct in believing they work then for mobile chips?

A good few of the laptop drivers that are using the AMD 5000 series are now using drivers from the main site. This is a vast improvement over the old once yearly updates laptops used to get. Monthly updates like desktops. Check out the amd site to which manufacturers use the main AMD drivers and which still want to use their own and avoid like the plague.

I believe so though I have not done this a quite some time. I would post questions in that forum and make sure. Do be sure to bitch at your vendor and let them know you would like to use the standard drivers without having to resort to a hack.
