Demo

Specs:
http://www.archos.com/products/gen9/specs.html?country=ph&lang=en

CPU: ARM dual-core CORTEX A9 OMAP4 1.5 GHz
Video: AVI, MP4, MOV, 3GP, MPG, PS, TS, VOB, MKV, FLV, RM, RMVB, ASF, WMV (Yes, they're just containers, but every file i've had ran on the Gen8 regardless of Audio/Video codec)
Subs: .srt, .ssa, .smi, .sub (Same old stuff)
Storage: 16 GB and 250 GB versions

The 3G module that can sit flush in the tablet was pretty cool. It's not really new tho since the Gen8's already supports USB tethering, they just made a second USB port hidden on this one.

The issue i have is that it looks like the charging port, usb client and usb host, *ALL* run off the same micro usb port on the 10"! Maybe i can use the 3G port since it's a full sized USB but i don't want to have to open a panel for that.

I'm still looking for a confirmed price for these.

Note: AAC is probably the same as the Gen8's. It DOES play as long as it isn't copyrighted material. Anime fansubs that use AAC run fine on the Gen8.

looks real good....i've always liked Archos as a company for some reason...

http://www.itworld.com/mobile-wirel...competitively-priced-and-packing-plenty-power

A few weeks ago I talked about Netflix certifying the Texas Instruments OMAP 4 platform for HD streaming under Android. This was the first (and so far, only) chipset to pass certification. The problem was, there were no Android tablets that used OMAP 4.

And although that hasn't changed, we've at least got something firm to look forward to, as Archos has announced that its G9 tablets, which have OMAP 4 under the hood, will in fact ship in September as rumored.

I'm also trying to choose between the two. And to be honest, all it would take for me to jump ship is for someone to show me a tf2 that can play anime. An officemate of mine just got a tf1 and i took that opportunity to test some videos. I simply gave him the sdcard from my 101, it had a mix of avi 's, mp4's, and mkv's. He couldn't get any of them to play.

Hopefully tf2 would get some decent codec support so I'd finally get more choices. I'm pretty clear on my tablet needs (a media consumption device that will support anything from anywhere) and at the moment, archos has a monopoly on that.

Edit: Whoops, looks i'm getting the tablet and the movie mixed up. I meant TF1 and TF2.

Transformer 2?

Mine has no problem playing any of my anime, but I did re encode my entire library (as needed). I agree with you that the arcos is much better as a device for media consumption.

Maybe he just doesn't know how to use it. But when i held it, it felt like you could knock someone out with it. Sadly, i don't think we'll be getting that kind of durability on the Archos, but it's not a compelling enough reason to switch since the ability to crack someone's head open is not in my features list :p

The harddrive they're gonna be using.

http://news.cnet.com/8301-17938_105-20073711-1/seagate-momentus-thin-powers-first-hdd-based-tablets/

As seagate momentus. 2.5" harddrive that's only 7mm thick.

And this.

http://news.cnet.com/8301-13924_3-20089241-64/250gb-android-tablet-coming-interested/?tag=rtcol;pop

And Archos has tweaked the Seagate drive a bit to allow it to perform more like the flash drives found in practically all tablets today. 4GB of flash storage sits on top of the HDD, according to Craig TerBlanche, director of marketing for Archos in North America. Often-used data is stored in the flash component, allowing faster access than a standard 2.5-inch HDD, TerBlanche said.

It's a hybrid drive. I've read reviews about them (including the one where you use an SSD and a 2TBmechanical drive together) but not really sure how well these will work on a tablet, but it does add the possibility of the drive being shut down while you're webbrowsing or anything that doesn't need more than 4Gigs.

Archos is releasing the G9 tablets worldwide in the coming weeks, scheduled for global release by the end of September. Here are the official $ USD prices:

Archos 80 G9:
8GB 1Ghz: $299
16GB 1.5Ghz: $329
250GB 1.5Ghz: $369

Archos 101 G9:
8GB 1Ghz: $369
16GB 1.5Ghz: $399
250GB 1.5Ghz: $469

For the confirmation if 8GB 1Ghz versions have 512MB RAM and 16GB and 250GB 1.5Ghz versions have 1GB RAM, you have to wait another few days or weeks for Archos to give us an official confirmation on the RAM capacity. As far as I understand, they may still be testing out the different types of RAM and capacities based on the latest Honeycomb 3.2 software most optimized for the high memory bandwidth of the OMAP4460 processor, to determine which type and capacity of RAM to use. Though these 1.5Ghz tablets are probably right now coming out of those factories so Archos should be able to confirm this at any moment now. Let's try again tomorrow and the day after, when the engineers are not on their week-end break and can give us an answer.

How is the PowerVR SGX on this compared to the one in the A5 on the iPad2?

No idea, i'm still waiting for more reviews myself.

Charbax got a preview, but didn't even bring any MKV's or apps to test on them and we missed the opportunity. They're making a list of things to try in the Archosfans forums for when somebody gets their hands on it.

Another one
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yjJFxsI8LyI

ugh, why don't they have a 2gig thumb drive with them that has 2-3 different codecs/containers to try!

Any idea when this will ship? Seems promising but Archos has to step it up a notch as far as build quality and support - updates. Access to Android Market is a big plus.

End of September to Early October for the Archos80's, the higher models come later. Which sucks since i'm waiting for the 101 16Gig.

I'm on the fence, loved the 10" screen on my TF but having something that could fit in your pocket is really nice.

To those complaining about not being able to play certain media, just load a 3rd party player like rockplayer. If the archos running android can do it, the rd or galaxy or other android tablets can do it.

Actually they can't. Rockplayer still needs your tablets hardware accelerator to actually work properly. Which other tablets, even the Tegra2, doesn't support. Archos tablets have extra hardware specifically for decoding videos.

In my experience all other players are the same. I haven't noticed any difference from stock on the TF.

Yeah. 3rd party players can potentially expand the number of supported containers. But they cannot magically increase the profiles it can run.

Rockplayer first checks if the inboard player supports the codec, if it doesn't it falls back on software. Which is pretty horrible. if the tablets hardware accelerator does not support 4.1h264 for example. Neither can Rockplayer.

Any release date for these things yet? They were slated for release in June, but still no sign of release.

The event scheduled for june was to showcase a physical product, which they did.

Shipping dates were only announced last week. Which would be around early October. The low end variants (Archos 80's) are going to be released first, followed by the high ends (HDD variants and 101's) a few weeks after.

Last year when i pre-ordered, they were announced to be shipped mid october, but then got pushed to november. They started shipping November 1, and i got my unit on November 7.

Just the low end A80's tho, i'll wait for the A101's.

I'll be looking out for the A80's. Unless theres a major difference in the capabilities that will probably be my take.

Can't decide if this will be worth it, comes down to the screen for me, anyone else somewhat bothered by the 4:3 ratio? Might just save up for the new Samsung

That's why i'm skipping the A80 and waiting for the A101, many of my videos are meant for widescreen. Connectivity wise, my media files at home are stored all over the place, external harddrives, sd cards, NAS, Windows Folders. So far, archos is the only one that can access all of them.

Low end A101 (This is 1Ghz, i'm waiting for the 1.5Ghz variant) review. Complete with specs of the tested video codecs.

http://www.arctablet.com/blog/archos-tablet/archos-g9-review-multimedia-capabilities/

We found the new Archos G9 tablet to be a amazing and versatile player for all your multimedia content, including HD movies. Thanks to the power of the OMAP4 CPU/GPU, Gen9 devices effectively play videos up to 1080p resolution in H264 high profile. In the tablet world, playing content in definition this high, is currently quite unique, as most of the competing devices are limited to 720 High Profile. The Archos Gen9 devices are currently one of the only tablets being able to read a Blu-ray file, these media being encoded in H.264 High Profile at 25 Mbit/s average.

Archos A80's are out now.

Demo above would have been decent but, but it apparently applies to ALL the g9s (well that was a downer). There's still no official mention of 1Gig ram anywhere and now it seems that the previously spec'ed 1Gig ram, 1.6Ghz is now 512MB, 1.2Ghz.

Video playback is an edge, especially for video enthusiasts like me, but only if the rest of it is average, going below specs on everything else nullifies it. Looks like i'll be waiting for kal-el and hope they fixed their codec support.

even if codecs support fails in Kal-El, quad cores with NEON will still punch through SW decoding :p

Question is, when will kal-el tablets arrive? If it's another 3 months after the A101, i'll probably get the A80 as a temporary tablet. This is really frustrating. Archos is still the best out there software wise (Their software features has no app equivalent), but they won't release premium hardware!

I was hoping to get a HP Touchpad to hold me over until the "premium hardware" ships, but no Touchpad for me at the Ebay prices!
