Apple’s Chief Financial Officer says that the iPhone is on schedule for launch in late June. Wasn’t it originally supposed to launch next month or am I just crazy?

Chief Financial Officer Peter Oppenheimer said on Wednesday the company's iPhone is on track to ship in late June. "We look forward to shipping the iPhone in late June and are very excited," he told Reuters in a telephone interview.

Meh. Of course they'll make a big killing off it. It could be six months late and people will still gobble up the technology-missing iPod phone.

It was always going to be released in June -- but I had heard June 11th was the date before (I seem to recall an AT&T rep told CNet news or something like that).

I understand it will be approx. $500
Anyone know if it will be cdma and gsm or what?
Want to get one for the wife on verizon.

It wont work for your verizon networks.

Right now, Verizon has PDA smart phones, more loaded than the iphone for a special of 99 dollars, this is for the Samsung i730. You can buy one and get one free. Insane. iPhone will have a hard time against this.... more the phone, more functions, for a sixth of the price  (if you count both phones).

i REALLY wanted an iphone... then i found out it wont run office... no word, no excel, no outlook.... LAME

now looking at OpenMoko.org neo1973

I don't think they'll be releasing a CDMA version or be available with any other GSM carrier since Iphone is supposed to be exclusively for Cingular. But it's GSM, should be carrier unlockable(Sim Unlock) whatever you want to call it.

Not much of a fan of Iphone, I think it's overpriced for the feature it's providing.

Hmm... I don't see touch screens and it has 64MB vs 4GB of storage.

Samsung: 4.49" x 2.28" x .97" Weight: 6.44oz
iPhone: 4.5" x 2.4" x 0.46" Weight: 4.8 oz

i730 is $199, buy 1 get 1 free, and requires a 2 year contract starting @ $79.99 for 450 anytime minutes

I pay $50/month for 800 anytime minutes through Cingular.

*shrug*

Why compare to products with very different features anyway?

And before anyone starts ranting about this or that, all I'm asking is to compare products with similar features. Ever think that maybe the reason the cost is high is because of things like multitouch? If the product you are comparing it to doesn't have that then comparing prices isn't exactly fair.

I doubt I will ever own an iPhone unless I get a great deal on one because I can't afford it, nor can I afford many of the other expensive PDA/Movie/Audio phones. That doesn't mean other people can't.

Actually, if you look at the current smart phones (Samsung i730/i830 and the XV6700) in particular, they have way more features and they also have "touch" features... you can also install an ipod interface for them and have the same functionality.... and they are $99 and $200 now. (the i730 you buy one and get one from verizon). Heck, they are also faster and can be unlocked.

They both have a slide-out QWERTY keyboard, Bluetooth, a 240x320 LCD touchscreen, and an SD expansion card slot, but the i830 adds support for both CDMA and GSM cellular networks (which means you can use it overseas) while subtracting the i730's built-in WiFi, digital camera, and EV-DO compatiblity (yeah, we know…). There's always a compromise.

Iphone has multitouch and a 320 by 480 screen.

Anyway, I really don't care. Continue on apple hating.

Understandable, but I honestly don't see why it's worth the huge jump in price for multitouch and a slightly bigger LCD.

Agreed. But the same could be said for CPUs, HDTVs, ... Also, multi-year subscription agreements tend to skew cell phone, Blackberry price differences.

the iphone is $600 WITH a TWO year contract. who knows without, probably 900

Any word on whether this thing uses a UNIX based OS? They say it runs "a mini version of OS X" but I'm wondering if it's really UNIX based or not.

wow, multi-touch.. rofl. Its on a cell phone with a little 3 inch screen. You are already holding the device with one hand, what are you going to do, set it in your lap so you can touch it with both hands? I can just see it coming.. "but officer, I was trying to multitouch, then I rear-ended someone going 70mph."

Is multitouch supposed to be a selling feature? What does the iPhone have to offer over a well integrated business PocketPC phone, smartphone, or blackberry? Nothing that I see except it costs about 3 to 6x as much money. That should draw a few yuppies onboard. :p

I'm just looking at the page of available Blackberries on my local service provider's site. All prices in CDN$ (3yr plan / 2yr plan / 1yr plan):

7290: $100 / $450 / $500
Pearl: $250 / $400 / $450
8700r: $300 / $550 / $600
8800: $500 / $600 / $650

See what happens at the high end? Less discounting based on subscription term--it's the thing everyone wants, anyway. And notice the effect of the subscription plan. Unless you go with the longest term, there is only a $150-200 difference between the low- and high-end. At 3yrs, this jumps to $250-400. Furthermore, the difference between the latest-and-greatest and the previous model quadruples from $50 (2yr) to $200 (3yr).

iPhone pricing doesn't look like anything other than business as usual. Compare it to the premium you would have had to pay to get a 20" LCD monitor vs. a 19" a couple of years ago. It is certainly less ridiculous than the $700 difference between the AMD X2 5600+ and FX-62 that I see over here.

I don't know why I'm arguing to vehemently--I don't see myself every getting this thing. Price has little to do with it.

thing is, the iphone isnt a high end phone, featurewise. its just a midlevel.

Hey if that few pixels matter to you with an additional $500 price tag, by all means go for it. Keep in mind the i730 right now is $99 for two phones with a 2 year contract.

But hey, buy all means, go buy a lower end phone for $500 more becuase it has mutitouch.

Nope. It's not going to be hundred or more bucks for no contract, it's going to be a lot more. I can bet $10 that it's going to be 900 to 1000 to buy it outright, because thats how much mine was, and that was a 750 dollar phone for a 1 year contract.

Does you $750 phone offer a pure-touch screen display (No annoying keyboard pullout/attachment)? Built in iPod for music and video? Visual Voicemail (I just had to go through 20 old messages so this sounds mighty nice)?

If not, then WTF are you comparing them to eachother?

And why did you spend so much money on a phone?

Actually you don't need the keypad to do most of your functions, everything can be done without sliding the keypad out. And yes, you can get a touch interface to look like an ipod, or an interactive keypad for the O/S itself as Apple demonstrated.

You might find the keyboard annoying, but you have absolutley no idea how annoying it is using the screen touch for writing an email or using the stylus. I have the best of both worlds, touch interface and a keypad.

Ipod is just an interface that you can download for WM5, you can get an interface that looks exactly like an ipod and you can rotate using the "virtual" apple wheel, ,next song, browse lists and everything.

You should see how much I spend on computers...

Nice link from '05, where can you download it?

http://www.apple.com/itunes/mobile/faq/

According to apple you can only get it through the Motorola phones.

And how is suing people because they are stealing your interface design sad, or just because its Apple? Sure seems like they have been sued for things like that before.

The age of the link does not matter... actually wait it does, it shows that it's been there and done in 2005...

Yes thats according to apple  According to them their phone is a first in many ways too, which in fact it really isn't... it has a new OS and a new interactive menu system.

Stealing interface design sad? According to apple upon it's debut, only the Iphone can do that

Well if it doesn't exist according to Apple, then its also probably not supported by them, so its probably not "iTunes" but a knockoff. And where is a download link to it since its been out since 2005?

Becuase we all care about support

Still no link to download after I asked twice, so I'm going to assume you don't know where to get it, if it even exists.

And your right, why should I care about support and want to actually play my purchased music

I thought this was the [H] forum where people cared about new software/hardware advancements and didn't care about higher prices.

name a phone that can play movies at 16x9 or music like that

not buying one but will get the wifi ipods

I just watched matrix 16x9 on mine. Point? Cool part about it is that I can actually use an SD card to load my movies onto there... what does the iphone have... oh wait, doesn't have any expansion slots... damn.

So I guess my 4GB SD card stacked with movies has nothing to compete agianst.

If it even exists... haha, pictures are not enough proof for you? Use google. One thing you need to learn about the hard forums, we don't serve things on gold platters for lazy people.

You think apple is going to support a compeditor that will outsel it's own product, nice. lol.

No, people care here whats the best regardless of price... but if there is something out there thats change in the pocket (in this case $500 in your pocket), then why would any Harder be dumb?

Man... you must not like Iphone. I personally agree with you on this iphone thing. A phone with pretty limited capabilities. I currently have iPaq hw6945 (hope they'll release upgrade to mobile 6). The thing is nice -- Built in GPS receiver, Bluetooth, GPRS/GSM, Camera, and Wifi.

Another thing, touchscreen suckass for mobility in a car. I used to own an IPAQ hw6315 -- only 4 hard keys. Pain in the ass to do anything with the phone, I always had to use Stylus for every single thing -- Try looking up contacts while you're driving and have to use a stylus. It'll be interesting when the phone program, web browser, or media player locks up. Oh can't change screen because it's LOCKed. With hardware key, at least you can maybe change to another program or to the Menu screen.

Actually, I like the iphone. I just dont like all the hype people make it to be. I like all smart phones ;)
