It was surprisingly recent I even heard of League of Legends. I understand it is huge in Southeast Asia, but almost no one plays it over here.

I used to see blog posts about LOL tournaments, and I would picture this: :p

I doubt there will be many lineups like the old ones. now that cheap phones are more than enough for most of us, the sun seems to be setting on the iphone craze.

FINALLY! Facebook, Email and the internet will get the CPU/GPU horsepower they have so desperately needed to run quickly and efficiently. Thank You, Apple! My days of having to wait endless split seconds for my 5 year old phone to do literally anything at all may finally be behind me!

I'm not upgrading until the phone gets a high refresh display. It's been in the iOS code, they just didn't implement it on this year's phone. Maybe next year.

I think I've lost count at about 7. LOL. Is this the one that doesn't even come with a charger? They might as well make you buy the box separately, just for fun.

I feel like they've all been pretty much the same phone since the 6 launched. I can't believe they are on 12.

I saw on the news that Apple won't even include a CHARGER or basic headphones any more. +$$$

Maximum Courage!

Meanwhile I keep buying $200 Motorola unlocked android phones every 2-3 years. I can buy 5 of those for the cost of 1 big iphone. And it has a headphone jack, and an SD card.

Well even though I dont care for apple I am still going to buy the best one anyways. It is a dumb status symbol but will help blend in with snobs. Also I am not buying it for myself since I don't care.

Like others, I'd say the biggest omission was lack of "ProMotion" display. 90Hz or 120Hz with LTPO. Paired with a 180Hz or 240Hz polled touch sensor, it would feel incredible.
It's a super weird omission too; because I feel like Apple in general tries to push display quality and they've fallen behind. While it's arguable that the tech wasn't developed to Apple's standards in years past, this year I feel should've been the year.
Everything else I'd say I'm happy with. Notch isn't my favorite thing, but I've lived with it for 2 years. And honestly, it's low on my list in terms of "complaints" comparatively speaking. I still wouldn't mind it disappearing into the bezel, but they'd have to figure out how to shrink their imaging stack, and right now that isn't feasible. FaceID is still markedly more complex than any competing hardware from Google or Samsung. Having touchID in the power button would be nice too, what with having to wear a mask all the time, but doesn't make or break a device for me.

lol you guys haven't heard of league of legends? Have you heard of DOTA?

I've seen that abbreviation on occasion. Again, mostly in reference to southeast Asian esports, but I have no idea what the game looks like or is about.

And I've been a hardware tech and games enthusiast for 30 years.

It's just not a title that has been popular in my circles.

Not everyone likes MOBAs. Frankly I don't know what Fortnite or Apex Legends really looks like because those titles don't interest me either (due to the Apple/Epic lawsuit I have seen some char models from Fortnite - seems kiddy). But these are all popular games in the right circles. There are plenty of League streamers on Prime Gaming (Twitch) that that is all they stream. But obviously the same could be said with whatever FPS is in vogue. The big difference is that all these MOBA games have been popular for far longer than any version of CoD. League and DOTA have no comparison in terms of longevity (with specifically a big player base) other than games like CS and StarCraft II.

High refresh screens are fuckin' legit, but I'm not sacrificing battery life for it. I turned it off on my phone after day 3.
My post sort of covers this, here it is again. I also expected Apple to also implement LTPO with high refresh rate. LTPO basically is dynamic refresh rate, allowing 1 Hz while the screen is on and not being touched and not showing any animated content. Then as soon as its touched (or any content requiring animation comes on) it dynamically increases the refresh rate to meet what is needed.

It does this transition smoothly (and imperceptibly to the user) by having an incredibly high polling rate on the touch digitizer. Currently Apple has a 2x polling rate on its phones, which is one of the reasons why the phone feels so responsive despite "only" having a 60Hz display. For proof of concept, LTPO is also used in the Apple Watch. It only has a 60Hz display, but it's "always on" at 1 Hz to save its battery life while nothing dynamic is happening. And it seamlessly moves to any Hz (1-60) as necessary. So the tech is there, the only "difference" then would be the iPhone having a higher than 60Hz display to use. And as an additional perk it would also in theory allow the iPhone to have an always on display if users should so choose it (or dimmed if so preferred or off I'm sure too in the settings).

Basically LTPO is the missing link. It allows users to have high refresh rate as well as excellent battery life.

League of Legends it's HUGE.. and not in Asia, it is globally.. as one of the biggest exponents of E-Sports games.. it's not my kind of games even if I tested several years ago... but ti say no one play it in america? far from that..

Apple started deemphasizing lineups years ago when it opened up online preorders. That and people really shouldn't be lining up for luxuries during a pandemic!

The sun definitely isn't setting on the iPhone. Apple actually had breakthrough sales for the iPhone this spring, and it wasn't just the SE helping. We'll see how the iPhone 12 line fares, but don't be surprised if results are strong.

Finally time to put my iPhone 7 out to pasture and pick up a 12 mini. Hopefully this is a return to proper sized phones and the end of the phablet craze.

Because people often engage in tribalism where they can't enjoy one thing unless they attack another (and, to be honest, you're a bit guilty of that as well).

The trend isn't ending any time soon. The shift toward larger phones has been going since at least 2011 (arguably 2010 with the Dell Streak), why would you expect it to suddenly stop?

Besides, many people want and enjoy big screens. A "proper sized phone" is whatever fits your tastes. It's great that you like small phones, but you're not the sole arbiter of what a good phone size should be.

Can anyone here name a legitimate use for High Refresh Rate.....phones. #FirstWorldProblems and that kind of thing. Did you miss your exit because Waze didn't refresh pixels 120 times in a second or someshit.......

Games, and just overall perceived fluidity and responsiveness. It's something of a luxury, but it would've been nice to have.

Of course to each their own. I'm just glad there's an option that doesn't require me to carry a man purse or heave my phone with two hands.

It's funny though that the mini is now considered "small".

Sure I get the whole "well if its there I'll take it" mentality but I never once swiped my iphone 6s and said "god damn that is slow and unresponsive"......but games, what are these games of which you speak? I thought they literally stopped making anything but time-waster types like half a decade ago, or am I just living under the wrong rocks.......

When that pokemon game came out I think I gave that a good 2 or 3 weekends. Other than that, I myself haven't had any games on my phone. Probably keep this iphone x until it dies. after that, just getting some older phones, not doing this $1k+ price anymore.

Regardless of whether or not you believe 120hz is worth it or not, or that mobile games suck - 120hz is still a marked jump in smoothness and responsiveness of a display.

Everything else on the iPhone are incremental improvements at this point and does not justify an upgrade for some of us. I'll be taking a pass on the iPhone 12 myself.
