Does anyone know if you can tether 1 Thunderbolt enabled new Apple Display to an Old Non-Thunderbolt Apple Display ?

TB-->Non

Seems like it should be doable if apple made it backwards compatible with the old cords, right :confused: You just can't go from Old->new to tether..

or did they change it up completely ???
 
Tethering monitors? I'm not sure I understand. What are you trying to do? What hardware do you have?
 
I'm not sure about that but I think it should work.

TB output -> TB ACD -> non-TB ACD.

He isn't talking about phones, he's talking about literally using a cable to do Thunderbolt pass-through, which is a new feature built into the new 27" Thunderbolt displays. I saw the thread earlier, but I am unsure of the answer, although I have seen the question elsewhere.

I assume the op is asking this question in order to save a few hundred by only having to buy 1 Thunderbolt display and 1 Displayport display.

Yes, this.

Can you go from a Thunderbolt Mac to a Tunderbolt ACD, and then to a Displayport ACD.

Thunderbolt will do it for sure with two TB displays, but there's no definitive answer on hanging a DP ACD off a TB ACD.
 
But not with the new Macbook Air, which has a cut down TB controller that only supports 1 display.

It's not the Thunderbolt chip's fault. The integrated GPU in the Core i5 / i7s is not good enough to drive 3 displays.

Its sounds like both. The new smaller and cheaper Thunderbolt chip has half the channels and Intel 3000 IGP only supports 2 displays anyway.

However what if you wanted 2 externals displays and have the laptop's display off? It would be a total of 2 displays which the IGP should be able to handle.
With the MBA it doesn't sound like this would work, but what about the MBP13. The MBP13 has the 2 display limited Intel IGP, but the full version of the Thunderbolt chip.
 
I think you mean Daisy Chain, not Tether.

No one knows for certain if you can Daisy Chain from TB Display->DP display.

But it seems like there would be a fair chance unless the output on the iMac/mini/laptops are non standard TB that are special versions with additional graphics support or if the all TB in the system are equivalent.

Would love to know that when anyone finds out - determines if I need to sell one and get a new one or not :D :D
 
Your answer is no daisy chaining a DP display onto a TB display.

BUT, it will work if you have a thunderbolt device (like a disk drive) in between the displays. Lord only knows why.
