    How does one even get their hands on something like this... did they raid Area 51 and steal it?

    Those modules with the single layer through hole boards reminds me of the crap I have to deal with at work, haha. (1960's and 1970's nuclear technology) Same color, same wire color and gauge.

    NASA sells their old stuff all the time. They have certain requirements for some things, like being an educational institution for the larger more significant pieces, but otherwise a lot of their stuff that can be boxed and shipped is publicly available. In fact, I think they are giving away(to an EDU only) a saturn 1 booster right now, if you can pay the shipping.

    Not necessarily. Legitimate ones of these come up for legitimate sale occasionally, government surplus used to be a real wild west. And there are replicas on the market.
