Bear in mind, I don't intend on doing a complete rebuild etc.

But, is this well-balanced and without bottlenecks in this day and age?

Pop in a nice SSD and you would be set. I would get at minimum a 128gb, 256gb would be best. I hate my 128gb, its just to dam small.

As much as I'd love an SSD, I'm saving that for my next build.

It can be transferred over to a new build, and you will have the benefit of it now. You could always get a small 128gb also for this build and a 256gb on the new.
Either way it would be a huge improvement that will last for a long time.
 
What's a good brand? Corsair? Crucial? Samsung? Intel?

I'm really new to the SSD game. I can only run SATA 2.0 otherwise my PCI-Express bandwidth drops from 16x to 8x. (it's a Gigabyte thing etc)

And yes, 256GB is the minimum.
 
Overlock that CPU and you may not need to do a CPU + mobo upgrade till the next Intel "tock".

Aa for the SSD, I recommend the Crucial M4, Plextor M5P/M5S, Samsung 840 Pro, Or Intel 520 series SSD.
 
That 8GB of ram might botteneck the size of CAD drawing you are working with. Or can also limit the amount of matrix computations you can do. The i5 is also limiting your distributed computing points.

Can't guess what else your computer might be used for. Hmm, I am missing gaming. Is it gaming?

It's not worth the money regardless of how fast it is. Just being an OCZ drive in itself makes it not worth it, not to mention in real world usage it's no faster than the drives mentioned by Danny Bui; and the drives he mentioned are from a much better company.
