I'm considering studio monitors for my computer and I was wondering if anyone is currently using them. I'm particularly interested in the M-Audio BX8a and the SBX Sub. All comments and critiques are welcome. :)

our own moderator, mag uses some alesis. you can check out his system in the show off your speakers thread

Nearfield monitors are ideal for a PC setup. The average positioning (2-4") is where nearfields are meant to be. Just a warning: monitors are suppose to be neutral and discerning, and will therefore expose any weaknesses in your source and the rest of your audio chain.

^^^^^ Agreed, I think near field monitors are the ideal setup for a PC. Home theater speakers
aren't designed to be placed at such distances which cause horrible imaging and computer
speakers have always sounded like crud to me. (yes even the "high end" ones) I record a
lot from vinyl and monitors (and headphones to some extent) are much better for bringing
out every last bit of detail. Been using the same monitors for the past 6 years. If you
have decent monitors... you won't need a sub... just fyi. Another good thing about studio
monitors is the used market... usually people take care of studio equipment and you can
normally get pretty good deals on them. I recently won an ebay auction for a buddy of
mine for some Alesis Monitor Ones and a RA100 amp for $156.

If you go the studio monitor route.. you will never go back to pc speakers. :)

I'm currently using a pair of Fosgate Audionics FA51.0 passive monitors, which are based on the Hafler M3 design. Very nice, very neutral.

If you have the room for them monitors are the way to go... placement of them is also crucial... your only real question is the active/passive decision... i personaly own a set of yamaha NS-10's... with an alesis ref amp.... if its good enough for every studio in the world its good enough for me,... the only sad part is that these mons have been discontinued due to what the cone is made out of.... keep in mind though studio monitors are made to have a perfect flat response... there are no tone controls for a reason... it will also change the way you listen to music... because with them you can tell when the engineer was being lazy....

i had some alesis studio 1's, they were great but unfortunately i think the crossover went in one of them...

im using a pair of KRK ST6's (also studio monitors) sound great imho

I have a pair of these and a cheap Panasonic reciever powering them. I need a new reciever, I'm not giving these speakers anywhere close to the power they deserve.

EDIT: Not studio monitors... whoops. Sorry.

since all studio monitors are ment to have flat respones how do you go about comparing them?

how close they actually come to that flat respose, also how loud they can actually get... because most really cant go loud w/o damage.... and also frequency response can play a big factor.... some studio monitors are simply glorified entertainment speakers... others (like the ones i own) are the cleanest sound possible....

oh ok what kinda specs do you look at when comparing monitors
i've had my eye on KRK rocket 8's for a while
i had the money to get em but wasnt sure now the money is gone

I was finally able to listen to the M-Audio BX5a and BX8a monitors yesterday. To my surprise I didn't like the sound of BX5a's at all and in fact the BX8a's didn't impress me that much either. After listening to several other monitors I am currently leaning towards the Blue Sky MediaDesk 2.1 System at a msrp of $600. It was truly amazing how full and complete these speakers sounded. Blue Sky offers a 3 monitor add-on to this system if I later decide to upgrade to 5.1. I'll listen to these once more but I think I've found my early Christmas gift. :)
