Since the stickied remote support software thread doesn't seem to be going anywhere and I need to get a solution in place, I'm starting this thread to get the conversation started again.

I have used and like TeamViewer, but before I fork out the cash I want to see if there are cheaper alternatives that will get me the same results (NAT/Firewall transparent, easy client connection, file transfer, connect after reboot, connect in safe mode, etc.).

In my search, I stumbled across ScreenConnect It seems to have all of the features of TeamViewer, but is cheaper up front at $300 vs $749. The ScreenConnect license only gives you major version upgrades for a year, but you can use the software as long as you want. TeamViewer is a lifetime license. I only found one thread on [H] that even mentioned ScreenConnect, so I'm hoping more of you have an opinion about it. The one downside that I see is that it isn't quite as brainless for the client to connect to and it requires a server. It doesn't tie you to a single licensed workstation like TeamViewer does, though.

I'm also open to other suggestions if you have them. I'm not opposed to paying for TeamViewer if it's the only product that will really fit my needs, but if I can save some money, great.

I'm probably the one who you saw use it, I was actually surprised how many people use Dameware, as I know little about it.

If you are looking for something like Teamviewer than ScreenConenct will probalby work for you. I've been over on Technibble and they have some good threads on it that i'll refer you to. Seems the sticky at the top is more representative from their company but they answer some questions in there but there are other mentions if you search the forums. http://www.technibble.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=35

Good luck on finding something that works for you. If you bought ScreenConnect you'd still have the Teamviewer license laying around two so you could really use both. You should trial ScreenConnect, I remember giving it a few weeks before my initial purchase. Now we are up to two license.
 
Yes, it was your post that I saw.

I red through the sticky that you linked, and a few other threads on the first page of the forum. It seems some people love it, others are not as impressed. I do like the option of being able to brand it without paying extra, though.

Dameware is great across a LAN, but it does not play well on a WAN.

I have downloaded demos of a couple of the VNC based options, but MSE freaked out on both of them, so I'd prefer something that doesn't use VNC.

Any other suggestions/recommendations?
 
UPDATE:

I had some time to play around with the demo/trial of ScreenConnect today, and so far it is great. It seems maybe a little bit more responsive than TeamViewer and offers a few more deployment/connections options than I was aware of going in. Aesthetically, it isn't as attractive to customers as TeamViewer, but I think that's customizable to some extent, so I will play with it some.

I'd say it's looking promising at this point.
 
hi guys,

i'm exactly in the same situation... i have been using VPN with RDP, VNC, TEAMVIEWER (free) but now teamviewer is bugging me so i have to buy it or connections won't last long... (5min). but i've heard about screenconnect it's cheaper and has more or less the same functions, what have been your experiences with it?
 
i use dameware at my office...

but i like being able to log in without ANY user intervention required...

for remote stuff where we're not connected directly to the box, we usually use something simple/free like join.me...

performance sucks though, but with so many free options and the fact that we're so rarely connecting to stuff outside our network (including VPN) doesn't make sense for us to have anything else...

and dameware is super cheap for 3 techs...

the thing is, dameware HAS a reverse connection mode, so all they really need to do to make it a simple remote support tool for internet connected folks (not on VPN) is package it better... for example you can pre-load the installs, but the installer only loads the pre-saved reverse connection servers on a per user basis....

useless..

also i have a .reg file i have to run to get it to work in safe mode... why doesn't it come that way? or at least allow me to specify that in the installer... it's sad because with only a few simple modifications i think dameware could be the end-all of remote support stuff on the cheaper side...
 
I did end up buying a ScreenConnect license. I like it. Easy to deploy and good performance. It handles UAC better than any of the others that I played with, too.
 
Ive been looking at screenconnect for MAC connections (mainly use dameware for WIn connections)
 
I haven't tested it on anything other than Windows, but I've been meaning to test it on mobile platforms at least. I dont have much call for MAC connections.
 
Yes, ScreenConnect works across Linux and Mac which is really nice. I've only used it a hand full of times over a year for anything outside of Windows machines. Glad you are lking it joblo

I am also interested for an alternative solution to teamviewer, but i was wondering if the OP could answer this:
I chose teamviewer for it's ability to NAT easily through strong UTM firewalls (Arkoon hardware devices and such), does screenconnect permit to connect through most firewalls without any prior configuration?

On a comparison website, that i will not link here since it's my first post on this forum, and do not want to get banned, it says that Teamviewer has NAT passthrough whereas screenconnect does not...

By default, SC will try to connect to the "relay server" via port 8041 and if that port is not open on the firewall, the connection will fail.
