anyone mess up a CPU like this?

Hey Guys,

Well i had to RMA a motherboard, and in the process i had to take the Heatsink off. When i did this i pulled the heat sink up slowly, and the cpu came out WITH the heatsink, straight out of the ZIF socket. Stupid thermal material with the stock heatsink  anyway, none of the pins were bent, and i didn't see any missing pins, just wondering if someone else had done this before. BTW it was an Athlon64.

Happens to a lot of people i know. Happened last week on my P4 when i changed my HSF.

while I've not had this happen to me personally, its getting to be pretty common. No worries.

Yeah, even thought it's never happened to me, I know some people that had it happen. Seems MOBO companies are getting lazy and not fitting the sockets correctly, or something along those lines. When you push the lock down, some times it doesn't actually lock the chip in.

Should be fine though. As long as the pins are still in working order you should be ok.

Most people I know who had slightly bent pins just bent them back, I've only seen one where the CPU went flying and the pens were severely bent.

Hes talking about the A64 and P4c chips sticking to the heatsink due to the thermal material sticking to the heatspreader.

It's happened to me too with my p4. The first time it happened it freaked me out because I was wondering where the chip had gone. I finally realized it was stuck to the bottom. No big deal when it happens now.

Wow, lol, what do they include Thermal Epoxy or something?? Hahaha.

it doesn't seem that bad at first, but once the thermal material heats up it like glues itself the the CPU, it was ass to get off.

Its glad to know its happen to a lot of people tho.

lil tip:

When removing the hsf... un screw or unlatch and twist serveral times before removing... itll break the bond and leave the proc where it sits.

lol.... same here.
the first time was when i replaced my zalman7000alcu with the swifty wb, then had to reseat my wb twice, during those times, the proc came with it :(. maybe this is the reason why i could no longer post at 290fsb, when i was still on air, i could do 300fsb no problem, but now since i switched to water, im stuck at 275 :(.

to avoid it from happening, try to remove the heatsink/block as right after you power down your PC. The paste will still be warm and won't be as sticky. works for me.

it isn't really a big issue, though it DOES wear down the gold contacts on the itty bitty pins. Intel only rates their CPUs to be removed and reinstalled 15 times when done correctly, and I know that I have exceeded the rating by quite a margin.

Sounds like some of the posters in this thread used Ceramique. :p I'm going to give it a try soon myself... I've heard it holds the CPU and HS together like glue. ;)

ya, but I've managed to do the same with Arctic silver paste as well

but ceramique is pretty sticky

I'm going to use Ceramique because I don't plan on upgrading for a while, so it'll beat the hassle of having to constantly reapply AS3 all the time.

I've had it happen hundreds of times, it's no big deal as long as the pins are OK and you're carefull when prying the processor back off of the heatsink. It happens because of the phase changes that thermal paste goes through, it ends up becoming hard after many hours of heat so that it wont bleed and run and is normal :)

From what I've heard, the main reason the processor comes out with the heatsink sometimes is because of the size of the pins on the newer CPUs. Since the pin count has gone up dramatically and the size of the pins has gone down so much, it doesn't hold into the ZIF socket like CPUs used to.

It's nothing to worry about generally. Just make sure none of the pins are bent or missing. The best way to avoid this happening, as people have mentioned, is to try and twist the heatsink before pulling it off the CPU.

Happened before on my Pentium 4 1.8 ghz with stock thermal pad. So I used hair dryer to warm up the heatsink and it came right off. It was working perfectly after that. I started panicking when I saw it stick to HSF and thought I had to buy new cpu.

Once the CPU and HS are on, I have no plans of removing them for my new system next month. The CPU/HS/fan have never been removed from my present system during the past 2 years. I'm still going to use AS3 just in case though.;)

so most of you don't use the stuff that comes stuck to the HSF on a P4 to stick the HSF to the proc?

Nope, thats a thermal pad and is only a poor heat conductor at best. Most everyone here will use something else - Artic Silver, Ceramique, or even generic RatShack goop.

aw, come on.

the foil/tar thermal pad that comes with the retail heatsink isn't THAT bad.
