Anyone else get an e6420 yet?

How does the FSB work relative to ram? Does changing the FSB of the CPU have any effect on the RAM's speed?

I'll be using 2gb of OCZ DDR2 800 (4-4-4-15).

The CPU itself does not have a FSB. The Front Side Bus is on the motherboard. The FSB is the link between the CPU socket at the Northbridge. The FSB has a direct relation to your memory speed. Whatever your FSB speed is your memory will be running at a fraction of that. At 1:1 your memory will be clocked at the same speed as your FSB. If you set the FSB to 400MHz 1:1 then your memory would be running at 400MHz (800Mhz effective). If you were running a 2:3 or 5:4 divider then your memory would be running at a ratio to your FSB speed.

LOL, still working through some RAID issues! That and I reconfigured my WC loop, I promise I will OC the hell out of it as soon as I can get things up and running.
 
For what it's worth on my E6420 I got from BLT a few days ago I'm folding 24/7 no problems, a tpf of about 12 mins, P2609 (unbelievable low temps), it folds at 3.0 GHZ, FPO/BATCH # L647G476, vcore = 1.350 v, memory 1.90v and a FSB of 375. :) I'm quite happy with the chip so far :D

I have hopes for a 4ghz suicide run. I already made POST at 3.9, but didn't make it through Windows loading screen, I expect much easier overclocks when my new ram arrives!

Also, take a look at the voltage. Just 1.225v for 2.69ghz, I may have made it with an even lower vcore than that, but I'm still getting a feel for this processor.

I can't explain this, I'm fairly new at overclocking. Cpuz reported a completely wrong voltage. Take a closer look at this picture.


I'm ashamed to say, I didn't know what my real vcore was. I had trusted cpuz to report it correctly... I was wrong (I had vcore set to auto in my bios, and when I saw 1.225v reported, I rushed to post here). It was at 1.54v. I have new stable settings for now, just until my new ram arrives.

My super_pi is terrible for the clock (slow ram).

Looking like a good one there. Try running Orthos or Prime95 on Small FFT's for 6-8 hours once you think you've found a good speed to test so we can see how high these chips are doing stable.
 
volts look good for 3.56ghz. what volts you require for 3.6? and do you really need 1.54v for 3.69 or whatever, or was that just auto bios settings? what week is your chip
 
I got one a few days ago, no regrets. I fold on it 24/7 in the Linux SMP except for the X2 4200+ (WinSMP) and without tryin' it was at 3.0 GHz stable running and the coolest cpu of my bunch ;) I have a E6600 (2.9 GHz), a E6400 (3.0 GHz), a E6420 (as mentioned above), a E6300 (Conroe, B2, only 2.0 GHz) and a X2 4200+ (2.4 GHz) all folding 24/7 for the cause.

why do you have so many computers?
 
I really wanted an e6600, but I can't sit and wait for the price drops so I went with an e6420. I really wanted the 4mb cache since I don't upgrade very often. I just purchased from PCNation with the overnight through DHL. Hopefully all the parts of my new system will be here Monday. I'm going from an Athlon XP 2500+ to the e6420 which should be quite the performance jump.

I'll just OC the e6420 enough to get e6600 performance. I'm only looking for 2.4 GHz or so on stock cooling. Would that be a problem or should I look into a Zalman etc.?

Haha I'm in almost exactly the same position. I'm jumping from a 2600+ though.. so I guess yours might be slightly more of a jump. :p

I'm shooting for 400x8 to run the CPU with an AC7 Pro that I just got in the mail today. So far its the only part of my computer that has showed up yet. My ram is supposed to run 4-4-3-5 stock @ 800mhz so I'm probably not going to overclock it for now.

Wow, very impressive! Great clocks at low voltage and still pretty low temps, I'm impressed. Looks like this chip is turning out to be a beast. :)
 
So it looks like these E6x20 chips are not just lower binned E6600/E6700's? I've been trying to decide between a 6420 and a 6600.

Same here. I can't decide if spending $38 and overclocking the e6600 will get me any more performance then saving $38 and overclocking the e6420...I have both open in a tab on newegg.com, just sitting there, waiting, till I decide which one to buy. Any advice would be welcome gurus.

If people are getting these things to 3.6 or better, I wouldn't bother with the 6600 unless you really wanna push your OC to upwards of 3.8 on water perhaps.. but even that is pretty hefty in itself. Save the 38 bucks and put it towards cooling. The only real saving grace of the 6600 is the higher multi I believe.

That was auto bios settings, but I think I may need around 1.5v to be orthos stable @ 3.7ghz. I won't know for sure until my new ram is installed.
 
well I decided to just play around today, and so far I hit 2.7ghz with mine.. I tried 2.8 but it bsod'd on me...

that's with stock voltage etc, but I'm on water so I'll bump the voltage up and see what happens later..
 
What I want to know is how much more speed can you get by overclocking the e6600 versus the e6420. I know the multipliers are 9 and 8, but does that make it easier for the e6600 to get a higher speed than the e6420? Can someone maybe explain this to me, or just how overclocking these CPUs and what speeds they can hit works, because that is the deciding factor on whether I buy a e6600 or a e6420?
 
This is just my opinion, I have both a E6420 and a E6600, I do primarily 24/7 with these beasts so stability, overall temperatures, dependability, etc are very important to me. (I don't want to stay up late at night to watch them) While, once again, this is only my opinion, the E6420 is one dynamite chip, I think you could get a more stable higher OC' with the E6600. (I was kind of down on the E6600 cpu until I put it into another mobo, now it's great) Like I said I do 24/7 folding and I have mild OC's my E6600 is 3.3 GHz and my E6420 is 2.8 GHz, both have 1 GB el cheapo SST PC6400 RAM

It's luck of the draw mate. You could end up with a dynamite e6420 that'd do 3.7 with 1.5v. Or you could strike out on a e6600 and not even break 3ghz without 1.55v.

Hmm.., now that you mention it I don't think I tried to OC' my E6420 to 3.3 GHz, I was just so happy taking my E6600 out of it's AW9D-MAX mobo (I thought it was a "dud's dud") and putting it into a TForce P965 mobo and getting it to OC' to 3.3 GHz stable (1.35v vcore). I couldn't get the E6600 to clock stable higher than 2.9 GHz (no matter what vcore) :mad: in the AW9D mobo, may be the board, may be me, who knows I don't care, I'm quite happy with a $104 USD mobo plus if and when I get a quad it'll go into a P5B Deluxe mobo
From everything I've read and heard you want to go with the highest multi you can (I don't know if they were talking as little as 8x to 9x) I wish I knew if the $38 bucks was worth another 1x, but I don't :( (my personal opinion is it is, I must be brainwashed by Intel)

Edit: Intel must have done something right with the E6600 because I haven't seen a Q6400 retail yet (I read about a ES Q6400), of course they have a server Q6400 known as the x3210 (I've read where it's a good chip) and a server chip known as the x3220 (Q6600), both from my understanding have 775 sockets.

Edit again: Hey bro, check out the OC'ing thread on this forum evidently some people can get 3.2 GHz with a E6420 on stock vcore (so the temps should be OK) It all really boils down to the "luck of the draw" some chips are "golden" and some aren't. (the difference between 3.2 GHz and 3.3 GHz hardly matter in the scheme of things

Opps I lied, I just rebooted myE6600 and clocked to 3.4 GHz from 3.3 GHz (I know "no biggie" I'm slowly on my way to 3.6 GHz I hope), checking stableness now and the vcore was set at 1.40 instead of 1.35v like I mistakenly stated above. MYBAD
 
Just got mine from brown this afternoon. Still waiting on my TJ09 and 4 120MM fans to show up before I can build. I'll take some pics of the pieces later.

Batch# is L649G592, hopefully it's just as good as everyone else's.
 
I've got my new HSF now and I am running at 2.9GHz with 30c idle and 52c full TAT on both cores. I have booted at 3.2GHz with stock voltage, but windows crashed so I think I will need to up it a little bit.

Does anyone know what safe volt ranges these chips handle? I am on average air cooling. Also, CPUz always gets my voltage wrong so I can't double check it in windows.

Use speedfan, it seems to report vcore correctly, at least it does for my p5b deluxe
 
I received mine yesterday from MWave. I installed and played with it some last night and this morning. SuperPi 1M ran 13.766s at 3.65GHz.
It would post at 3.75, but was not stable even with vcore set to 1.6v in BIOS (real 1.57v).

The chip finally seems stable at 3.68GHz with 1.525v vcore set.

Left it encoding a few movies with AutoGK before leaving for work and will post screenshots when I get home.

Board = P5B Deluxe with vdimm mod.
 
Now up to 3.2GHz with 1.4v (could go lower on the voltage, but intend to clock higher instead). The temps are below 60c in 100% orthos and TAT load on an old cooler on air (Zalman CNPS700b-cu).
Probably will max out around 3.5GHz.

Are you running at 8x400 for your 3.2? Some people have been saying theres a hole in the 6400's between 375 and 420ish, I'm hoping thats not the case with the 6420's. I'm shooting for a 3.2ghz clock on mine with an AC7 Pro as long as my temps don't get over 60c under orthos load. It's my first time OCing though.. so we'll see how it goes. :)

hole isn't with cpu but rather northbridge since high 300's would be overclocking northbridge way too hard. by 401 (400 with custom optimizations) it gets a little closer to spec and goes from there again.

I see.. so when I start to OC, should I go to like 350 and then jump to 400 so I dont strain the NB too hard?

That is one "dynamite" question, please answer. Would I be better lowering the multi on my E6600 to 8 and going 400+ fsb :confused:
 
Just got my 6420 & rest of my setup yesterday. So far I'm running bone stock speeds.

400fsb is magical, so if you can run 3.6ghz on your e66, stick to 9x and use 400. If you intend on running 3.2ghz, then drop to 8x and use 400.
 
This is a great chip. Probably one of the best I've had...

Even though I haven't pushed it much yet... Anyone know how far I can go on the stock Intel cooler?
