I'm seeing some good prices on Samsung 830 256gb SSD drives and I just got paid
If there any reason to wait a week or two or should I just buy one now.
Is the Samsung 840 a replacement for the 830?
 
It's always a waiting game with electronics. The longer you wait, the closer to free they get. Just accept that fact and you'll be fine.
 
Don't know if the 840 is meant to be a replacement, but it's performance in some areas is quite a bit better from what I read. So depending on what it's price difference is, it's what I'd personally go with.
 
Note that Samsung has two new SSDs coming out this month : the 840 and the 840 Pro.

Pricewise, the 840 should eventually be less expensive than the 830 because the 840 uses TLC flash, and Samsung is positioning the 840 to be their value model. But at launch, the 840 may cost the same or more than the 830 does now. It could take a few months for the 840 to be cheaper than the 830.

Performance wise, the 840 Pro will be considerably faster than the 830, but it will also cost more, at least initially. Since the 840 Pro has similar hardware to the 830, and 21nm flash, it probably will cost Samsung less to make than the 830. But since Samsung is also introducing the 840 (their value model), I guess they will not be aggressively discounting the 840 Pro, and I would not expect to find the 840 Pro selling for less than the 830 for a long time.

Comparing the performance of the 830 to the 840 is tricky. The 840 should be faster at 4K random reads and writes, but the 840 will probably be a bit slower at sequential writes. And the 840 will have less endurance than the 830, due to the TLC flash in the 840.

Bottom line is that for a good value, probably buying an 830 now is the best move. If you are looking for top performance, then you might want to wait for the 840 Pro, since it will outperform the 830 in every way, but will also cost more than the 830.

I will be upgrading from an WD20EARX so anything will be a huge improvement. I'm thinking that the 830 should be a good enough than. At least it is well tested with mature firmware.
 
Get the 830. You will get a still-damn-fast and damn-well-proven-reliable drive.

I got a 256GB Crucial M4 for my b-day in august because it was $50 cheaper at the time... I really wanted a 830 ...meh

i think the price especially for the256GB 830 is pretty good right now... if i was buying today i'd probably jump on that in a second.
 
You aren't really going to see a real-world performance difference between the 830 and 840 unless you sit and watch benchmarks all day. Go with what's cheapest.

And for those saying it's a great deal right now.. maybe for the 128 and 256GB models, but the 512 gets no love at all :(
 
I just bought my 256GB 830 and have no regrets. It runs circles around my Vertex 2 and gives me nearly 100GB more storage in addition. I wanted a stable, proven but still fast drive and I decided to pay a bit more for the 830 over the M4. The 830 is still a fantastic choice today even after having been out as long as it has. But, yeah, I would've loved the 512 too but that model is still too rich for my blood.
 
I've had a 128GB 830 for a year now, paid $190 for it (tho it did come with a copy of Batman AC). I have no regrets, hell I don't regret paying $220 for an 80GB X25-M either, that drive's working like a champ on my parent's current desktop (my old Q6600, thing will probably last them another four years easy).

I'm actually keeping an eye out for 830 sales despite the release of the 840 and 840 Pro. I wouldn't pick the 840 over the 830 unless it's cheaper. I had been waiting for the 256GB 830 or Plextor M5S to come close to $150 in order to upgrade but now I'm thinking that if I spot a 128GB 830 for $75 or less I'll just jump on that (before it sells out, damn you Newegg).

Chances are even with a 128GB + a 256GB I'd still run out of space for games and I'd have to periodically shuffle them on and off the large HDD with Steam Mover, so I might as well save some money and just go with a second 128GB... It'll still give me enough space to have at least half a dozen titles on SSD at all times, I don't play too many games at the same time anyway.

If Intel hadn't screwed P67 users I'd just RAID them, too much hassle sans TRIM tho.
