Any long time active folder with an RDRAM system? Please help

Ok, fellow folders, this is related to a thread here. Basically I will bid on an ebay auction for RDRAM and I will not be able to test it until I get back to the family computer, which will be in 6 weeks.

If you are a long time active folder, i.e. at least 6 months or more than 55,000 point folding for team 33 and you have an RDRAM system that has a 400 mhz FSB, I would request you to test the RDRAM and see if it works. The auction has a DOA warranty for a week after shipping and I would like to know before I take it home that I have working RAM sticks. This is only if you can let me know if it works within a week of shipping and then ship it to me.

I will of course pay for all the shipping so there is no cost to you.

Help a fellow folder out. I can boost the PPD for this system to about 170-190 ppd if I get this RAM upgrade.

Let me know if nobody else can help out. I can put together a system to test this (need to dig out a PSU out of [H]OldMarty).

Or else my old man just bought a dullie board which needs some of this ram. I can "break in" this boards for him... It's used but could always be broken in some more.

I have 4 sticks of 1066 RDRAM, in one of my rigs, 256 MB per. If this would help, I could send one stick C.O.D. I have to keep at least 3 sticks, to continue receiving QMD cores to this box.

RDRAM needs to be in pairs... and you'd need those filler thingies if you took any out.

hey thanks marty. I will PM you the details of the auction. Hopefully I will get it for cheap. If I win, I can send the RAM directly to your addy and you can check it out for me. I will pay for the extra shipping so I can have peace of mind if the RAM is working or not. :)

Thanks again, marty. :)

Leadman584- Would this RDRAM work in your box? It might be better to test there. Just drop them in and test.

I know the Dell MB did work before I gutted it, all I would have to do is drop a CPU/PSU back into it. All should work....

The dullie is untested and I'd hate to have problems with not know what the source of the issue was. If the thing did not post, could be anything.

Just thought- I could try it in there, and if problems arose try in the Dell.

Either way works.

I can drop 1066 or lower RDRAM in my P4T-533C box without problem. I have the placeholder thingies for my box :p . It's not dual channel, contrary to what you have read. I wish. Dual channel was never implemented for RDRAM systems. Intel gave up on Rambus, fairly early in the game, unfortunately. They made a very powerful enemy, as XDRAM/Cell systems can easily bankrupt both Intel and AMD. Apples contracts with IBM, assures that they will be the first to use this technology. PC's with 8 onboard processors, and RAM that runs in excess of 3GHz, most certainly frightens the stiffs at Intel, and AMD. How loyal do you think Abit, Asus, DFI, or any MB manufacturer will be, when faced with vastly superior technology?

And huge latencies? No thanks, I'm even planning to stay away from DDR2 as long as I can. I'll be first in line for SRAM. Really low latencies, not the stuff Corsair claims is LL. No refreshes = fast.

http://arstechnica.com/paedia/r/ram_guide/ram_guide.part3-6.html
Sram latency is about 10ns, as compared to 55-70 for ddr. That's what I'm talking about. Get that L2 cache onto sticks, and let me have a gig of it. :D mmm bzip2.
edit: typical rdram 1066 has 40ns EACH STICK. With 4 sticks, that's 160ns by my count. Lucky thing FAH doesn't hit the latency too badly.

What makes you think AMD won't adopt XDR if that is the direction the market goes? And Cell...........a little early to be saying it will dominate the market....x86 just won't freaking die like it should.......ask Intel. IIRC x86 and other CISC architectures are better suited for the more diverse challenges that happen in desktop level use.

I'm going to bring back EDO all on my own, that will show you all !

Hey, how about bringing back punch cards, monochrome graphics, and 8" floppies too! :p On topic, there is a slim chance that I could come up with some matched pairs of 256's. I'll have to check with my boss and see if any e-shrinkage would be possible in this area.

Hey 4k made you write really tight code........that part at least was a good thing, unlike the bloatware today.

I went through my MB manual very carefully, and RDRAM timings cannot be mixed, must be installed in pairs, and all slots must be filled, either with RDRAM, or C-RIMM's (placeholder thingies). In theory this RAM should be great performer. Real world it's so so. Better than the old SDRAM, worse than DDR. Bus on the A chips maxed at 533MHz. This stuff does not overclock very well. I lost a windows install attempting to overclock my old board by 5 MHz.

Buying these chips in pairs get salty quick, and not really worth the higher price.

As far a technology goes, I'm personally hoping the rumors are true, that dual core A64 chips will work in 939 boards with a bios revision. Sounds a bit far fetched, have to wait and see.

bring back the punch cards if you want, but leave the readers out of it, I used to fix those things, god what a PITA those things were to fix. I think I still have one of the used sponge rubber rollers at home, it looks perfectly fine, but it's too worn out to work properly. And impossible to tell that's the bad part til you change it :) not to mention you had strip the machine to the frame to replace it :)

Ahhhhhhhhh, the good ole' days :D

the PRT (Personal Rapid Transit) at WVU ran on punch cards from the early 70s until almost 1998 or 99.... Ask any WVU student... it's definately a love-hate relationship!

edit-1998 according to this...
another good link... with pics,etc

Keep on Folding!!

For what it's worth, I had a system running unmatched pairs of RDRAM. I did not thing it was possible, until I went to add ram and said WTF is this.

It was strange.

hey marty,

hope you got my PM and e-mail I sent after you were offline last night.

About you giving be 50 bucks for being so good looking?

I'll have somethign to test it with, could be cool using the fold server to handle a dullie-- something else for Mage to screw up.

Old man-no problem.... I expect they will work.... the board is spec'd with PC600 (300 mhz) and PC800 (400 mhz) with processor 133 mhz..

Cool.. as of right now, with 5 days left, I am winning the auction $15.50 + shipping. Not bad for 512mb of RDRAM. But the other guy will most likely put up a counter bid.

I hope you know I'm kidding. So, 4 gigs of ram for the dullie? hehe j/k

What ever you do, don't post your auction link. You might end up buying a cell phone or something,,,somehow...

I hope *you* know i'm not. :D

Seriously, it'll be cool to have a real duallie to play with on the fa[H]rm. Finally figure out if those config scripts actually work.

What kind of hardware is it? I didn't get the PM...

Duel Intel P3 733's with some mising RDRAM... Just a gimic purchase a family member made.

Nice... I almost bought a dual 866 box, but it needed ecc pc133 and that stuff is expensive as hell. Almost as bad as rdram... ;)
