Hello, this is my first post here.

Anyways, I have been scouring the interwebs for a few months now for answers. My new computer that I built over the summer doesn't like to play games. My specs are in the sig. It's all perfectly capable of running games but every time I play, it always crashes to desktop. Nothing is overclocked.

Examples:
GTA 4 - says the .exe has stopped responding
Star Wars: KOTOR - just crashes
Portal: just crashes also.
League of Legends: Boots me out of the game and brings up the bug reporting program.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
 
The crashes could be driver related, GPU related, PSU related, HDD related, or RAM related. Hit up the stickied "Basic Troubleshooting Guide" and report back once you've done the HDD, RAM, and GPU tests.
 
in order of most likely to least likely its:

GPU drivers
bad ram stick (run memtest 86)
failing psu
bad gpu

at least, thats what i've found in my experience
 
Will do. I'm running the scans now. So far it has been three hours on CPU and GPU. No errors so far and hard drive is normal. I have run MemTest before and there had been no errors.

Sorry it took awhile to reply. I have been busy with school work.
 
Just to be clear: Which software did you run to test the CPU, GPU, and HDD?

Also, try reformatting and reinstalling the OS just to rule out an OS issue?
 
I used the Samsung software for the hard-drive since mine is Samsung.
I used ATI Tool for the GPU and Prime95 for the CPU.

I can try reformatting and reinstalling the OS but I will need to get an external drive first.
As an extra note, this is actually the second time the OS was installed.
 
I'd run the tests again just to be certain. If the tests pass, reinstall Windows as Danny suggested.
 
Could the fact that I am using Core Unlocker on a six-core processor that are already unlocked cause problems?
 
Alright, I got two new games Crysis and Skyrim. Both of them crashed also. I completely wiped my ATI graphic drivers and reinstalled them directly from the sight. They still crash. :(
 
Highly interesting that multiple games would consistently crash, when tests of individual components all pass. Have you tried running a benchmarking software for the GPU such as 3D Mark? There is a very slight chance that your PSU is biting the dust. Rosewill has been known to have a lot of issues with their Multi +12V rail PSUs, since each +12 rail is actually only getting 20A. If you have your case wired badly all your components could be trying to draw from the same rail, resulting in a power shortage. The GPU could be limiting it's own performance due to a lack of available power.

A good way to test is to get something like 3D Mark and run it, which would allow you to stress test your GPU (and thus your PSU). If that crashes too, try having one of your friends loan you a PSU for you to test on first. If it runs, might just be a software compatibility issue, reinstall windows.
 
Hmm. Run Furmark for a few hours (hope the cooling in your PC is good) and see what happens.
 
What settings are you running the games? If your running at max setting/max resolution, have you tried running at low settings?
You should be able to handle max settings with what you have, but if it runs at low settings okay, it could be a cooling problem as the higher resolutions/graphics tend to generate much more.
 
I just re-installed Windows because I was able to borrow an external hard drive from a friend. I'll give the games some tests in a little bit. If they still crash, I will run Furmark.

@broncosaddict I have tried lowering the settings before. I have set them to bare basics and they still crashed.
 
Hm 3D Mark results says your drivers aren't approved. Are you using stock AMD drivers or brand specific ones?
 
How did reinstalling Windows go? Is it still crashing? How about Fur mark?
 
I just played about 30 minutes worth before my class started now. I didn't suffer any crashes. I will try playing longer later.

Also, I fixed League Of Legends crashing. I just re-downloaded it.
 
Sounds like it was a Windows error then. Probably some corrupt drivers/files. Let us know if you experience further crashes.
 
So far it seems to be a Windows error because I was able to Crysis much longer than I normally could. I will continue testing and let everyone know.
 
Sorry for reviving a somewhat old thread but crashing has started again. I cleaned the entire computer out and made sure all connections where good. I also used CCleaner to clean the registry which helped some but it still continues to crash. Should I try using a different PSU?
 
Did you run memtest86+? At least overnight and optimally 10+ hours just to be on the safe side. Even then it's not guaranteed, but the longer it runs the more sure you are it's not the ram.

If you have spare parts try swapping them until you find out which one it is. Does it crash only when gaming?

Prime95 should run for a couple of hours. Keep tabs on your CPU temperature with something like HWmonitor. The thermal ceiling on that 1100T should be 62C, so if it hits that temp it will automatically reboot to protect the CPU from overheating. The temps of videocards generally run hotter (80C+).

I have run memtest86+ quite a few times for close to 10 hours, if not that time. It ran perfect each time. The crashes only apply to gaming. Normal tasks or even extended run times have no problems. I will try Prime95 again but that held for around 5 hours with no problems last time. As for temps, I will monitor them. I did when I first finished the build and CPU never went higher than 37C and GPU never went more the ~75C.
 
Well, I didn't try a different PSU but I did manage to narrow it to the RAM. I thought it might be bottlenecking the CPU or GPU so I took two sticks out to run on 8GB. After that, the crashes disappeared! Now, I am testing to see if it is a bad stick or one of the slots on the motherboard causing the problem.
 
I narrowed it down to a bad RAM slot or the computer is just being bottlenecked. I assume with BSOD that it is more so the slot than being bottlenecked. I would like to thank everyone for their help and input that they had to offer.
 
glad to hear you came to a solution its always tricky finding what the cause may be, just remember the check lists for further refrence
