Heres my comp specs. Feel free to ask for more info if needed

3500 winchester
Chaintec vnf4 (lastest drivers)
x800 XL (lastest drivers)
seagate 160 gig 7200 rpm
450 20 pin Raidmax ATX12v (I do have the 4 pin going to the mobo)
1 gig G.Skill pc3200 in dual channel

Installed windows and all was well until I got a VPU error. Thats just the beginning. From what Ive read it was most likely drivers or a gimped graphics card, but ofcourse my problems don't end there. Windows decides to take a crap and I find my self formatting my hdd and re-installing windows, but no matter how many different discs and versions I use (Xp, xp sp1, xp sp2) during the installation It keeps saying that it cannot find certain files on the disc. data.cab is the main one but if I keep hitting enter all of the other ones just go through anyways. Once I get into windows, its just error after error. One specifically was a memory dump issue. I have a feeling that it is my hard drive failing, but any help as to what it could possibly be would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Quick edit: Another error, setup was unable to verify drive c:

Should I just return it???

Try running a diagnostic on your hard drive to make sure that is the cause of your problems. Maxtor makes a good program called PowerMax that works with any hard drive brand. If you do find out that it is your hard drive then what you can do is a full low level or write to zero format. This will completely wipe out your hard drive to the factory conditions. Of course you won't be able to get old data of that hard drive anymore so you might want to try to back stuff up first if this isn't a new hard drive. If that doesn't work then your hd is toast and you should RMA it/get a new one.

Also check to see if your voltages are reading fine. From this sticky at the Power Supplies forum, Raidmax isn't a trusted brand. I've never dealt with this brand before so I can't say from experience if that is true or not. Power can also cause your system to crash like you said it has been.

I am assuming that you haven't OCed anything on your system while installing. If you have then set everything to default speeds and try reinstalling.

the hd is master with no slave, and I have a cd drive master, and dvd slave. My hd is seagate so I don't think I can use that maxtor link, but new egg is gonna take it back so I might as well send it back but I guess I should get a new psu huh.

I would first download and run Memtest86.
If you have bad memory then any data loaded into WinXP ram drive as it installs its self could well become corupted.
It does not need an OS to run so its the first thing I run on any new computer.

Once you know your ram is ok then start thinking CD/Hard drive/cable may be bad and if possible swop for another.

Luck....... :D

running seagates diagnog, mem test coming up, so far everything looks clear. What the hell??

If it can't copy files from discs for whatever reason, I would also point to bad memory right now. That's what happened to me when I built my current machine last year - one stick of memory was bad.

Tell us what happens when you start running memtest86.

sidenote: Hey, your usename is the nickname girls call me by...and still call me by.

That sucks, so far I did the seagate test and it said everything was fine, I'm gonna do the mem test when I wake up. Thanks for all the info so far guys.

sidenote: Hahaha, guess they got a thing for bill's

Oh boy, at 40% so far with 1400+ errors. Nice call on the mem. Guess I'm sending that back instead of the hard drive. Thanks for the help guys.

HOLY!!!!!!

1400+ ERRORS?!

No wonder!

Good call, hope new memory fixes your problem! :)

Have you been screwing around with the timings/voltages on your mem? that could be causing your issues. Have you got the expensive TCCD stuff? or just their value line? If its the more expensive stuff what voltage is it running at? that may explain your problems if the timings are very tight.

This mem is G.Skill 3200 from new egg and I haven't even messed with anything yet and the error count is up to 1.5 million, I shit you not, I wonder if I should take a picture :D

All my settings are stock voltages. I haven't even tried to oc yet, but I guess this memory is messed up : \

just passed 2 million, and I think im gonna stop, I'm just gonna return this memory and hope they I can get some that works.

kinda dragging this thread on but I took out the stick and popped a 512, and ofcourse I run into more problems. Windows xp install still won't accept the .cab file at 11% no matter what version I use. I'm stumped and burnt out from the problems. Any tips?

I had similar problems recently with an older comp. i was trying to fix it was the cd rom. Do as Herulach suggested above. Try a different cdrom drive if you havent already. Mine had all kinds of weird errors. Memtest is running from the cdrom isnt it?

yes it was, but I test a different stick which should no errors at all compared to the other 2 that had like 2 mil in 2 hours, but ill try installing from a different drive, thanks for the idea.
