Been running Gentoo64 for quite some time now
Have 3D desktop and all that jazz as well
you really need to ask what abt Vista you would like to see. The only thing that Vista has that Linux doesn't (and WONT!!!) is all that BS-DRM shuved down yr throat
what i want, is, complete 64bit driver support for all my hardware, like my 8800 card, drivers for my motherboard (d975xbx), my printer (epson r200), full use of my 4gb memory.
capable of 128x128 (if i want), big icons like in vista, cleartype. etc...
thanks.
no i wasn't thinking about game. i thinking more about the 3d gui use of the graphics card that vista will use!
Uh, there is more reasons for Linux:
- Open source software that allows you to compile from source
- Linux supports every platform available
- Linux has native support built for whatever you build it for.
- Linux runs considerably better in terms of stability, security, and performance wise when compared to Vista
- Linux supplies all of the software you essentially need for no cost.
- Linux runs a majority of Windows applications to a good extent.
- Linux file sharing is virtually platform independent
- Linux in general is pretty much platform independent
- Linux lets you do whatever your little heart desires
Two reasons for Vista:
- It plays games with DirectX 10
- It will allow you to make little children cry when you show them it's RAM management.
thanks.

I have a nVidia 7900GT and am at present using Berly+AiGLX to provide me a 3D desktop (virtual desktop cube, transparancy,wabble...) and it is very smooth (can be without it now, soo many smoother looking things).
the 8800 was actually support within a day of it being released (in 64bit as well!!! at full performance - something that even Vista cant do...). nvidia released some beta drivers to allow the 8800 to work. these drivers as of abt a month ago went "stable" so yer your card is supported
don't rule out gaming. Two big games due out in the next couple of months (bar delays) are Ut2007 and QuakeWars, both will have (at launch or shortly after) Native Linux clients!!! (ie no need for emulation!)
Both these are on my list. Also if you do have windows-only games then Wine (esp the latest) is actually pretty good (WoW runs fine)
Does WINE even work for 3D games?
We all need to bow our heads and give thanks to nVidia. They have really been troopers ever since last year in getting drivers, support, and updates mobilized for us Linux users. The demand has risen completely in Linux needs. Also, nVidia backs OpenGL more than they do DirectX right now since their "CG" is based from OpenGL.
Look at the 8800GTX demos. Three of the best ones are in OpenGL!
As long as the industry makes OpenGL games... The Wine dudes can pick us up from there.
bullshit, fuck those assholes and their binary blob drivers.
