Anti-aliasing+ HDR

umm..

as far as i know they do, it may only be ATI that is supporting it now though..

Why can't these technologies work in conjunction with each other?

At a technical standpoint it deals with the frame buffer they use. Both FP16 HDR and AA use the same frame buffer, so you have to choose between one. ATI X1x00 series of cards fixed this issue as it was a new architecture. Im sure the next gen of Nvidia cards will also fix this problem. Im sure someone who knows more than me will be able to give a deeper explantion if you want but that is the basics of it.

They have implmented HDR differently ATI and NVIDIA.:

ATI:
FP16 HDR with AA but no FP16 Filtering.

NVIDIA:
FP16 HDR, no AA but FP16 Filtering.

Terra - Both have 2 out of 3...kinda funny *L*

The trend is each company "leapfrogs" each other, feature wise, with each new technology. Nvidia did it to ATI with the 6000 series cards and SM3.0 and now ATI did it with HDR+AA.

Both will continue this game.

But neither have FP16 HDR with FP16 filtering and AA...

Terra - And they should be punked for that...we want features!!!

It is kind of funny isn't it, weird how that worked out.

Yeah...seems like they view HDR a bit differently either side...but can anyone be surprised? *L*
Infact I didn't even know about this untill you wrote it somewhere else
Here hoping that next gen will have all 3.

Terra - It should be possible...each company only need to implement 1 more feature..for FULL HDR :D

Yeah even though features are great, what would the performance decrease be? If we did have HDR+AA+FP16 filtering, would that cause any performance decreases?

With the way the preformance of GFX cards evolve, I think they could do all 3 in next gen.
I would however also like to have the option in the control panel to turn features on/off...
I mean we a pay a bundle for the latest cards...so give us all the options/features that can be stuffed on the chip...

Terra - I like having the options to turn things on/off :)

I thought it had something to do with performance and most cards except the latest not being able to handle it??

Anyway there is a work around for ATI cards that gets HDR + AA working in Oblivion but not sure about other games.

Basically you need the Catalyst 6.3 drivers and the "Chuck Patch".
There was an interview somewhere with "Chuck" and he explained all the technical details of what he did and how he got it to work. My brain blew up after the first couple lines.

Here's a couple links
Elitebastards
Hexus

Do a google and I'm sure you'll more info.

Only when FP16 filtering is used, which right now is basically never for the most part. The only times I've seen FP16 filtering used is for something like a bloom filter, but it's fairly trivial to simulate the required filtering for that in a pixel shader. The lack of FP16 filtering on X1000 cards is much much much much less significant than the inability to support/antialias an FP16 backbuffer.

I think they could do all 3 in next gen.

They will. D3D10 requirement. ;)

Both will continue this game.

Not for long. D3D10 will force NV/ATi to fight over performance (for a taste of things to come, look at ATi going on about HQAF and 'SM3 done right').
