Is it just me or does the Antec TPII 550W just stink.

I bought one a few years ago and had to RMA it at least four times in that period!

What is your guys' experience with this power supply?

Mine's out on RMA right now. Plugged in a fan while the machine was running, it sparked and the machine shut down. After that my computer would crash under load.

My fault, but I had done this before with other PSUs and never had an issue. I hope they send me back a new model.

Yah, those Antec Truepower line have not been too reliable. I have read many users having theirs died in a few months or arrived DOA.

The Antec Trupower I and II series of PSUs as well as their Smartpower line were plagued by poor design choices, mainly cheap capacitors that couldn't handle the heat well and a cooling system that kicked in way too late. All of this combined led to many TPI and TPII PSUs dying.

With that said, not all Antec PSUs are bad. Their Earthwatts, Neopower and Trupower Trio line of PSUs are actually made by Seasonic. Granted they are lower quality Seasonic based/made PSUs but they're still far better than the TPII, TPI and Smartpower line of PSUs. So I wouldn't dismiss Antec PSUs off the bat now.

This is all true, but I still suggest people avoid Antec for anything save cases if they have the money. They cut corners, regularly, and it comes back to bite you in the end. I've had more Antec branded PSUs die than any other brand, I've had more Antec branded fans die than any other brand, the power plug on my Antec laptop cooler disintegrated about the second week I had it under normal usage... see a pattern?

Bought a TP II 550W in December of 2005, had it fail within the last few weeks.

Today I received the replacement, a TP 3 550W. Hopefully it lasts.

Mine's been working for a few years, but I'm beginning to suspect some issues with it lately

been using one of those for the last 3 years or so, not a single problem so far (crosses fingers)

Yeah, I just RMA'd my TPII 550 and Antec gave me the 550w Trio as a replacement.

Me two ! True Power Trio on the way ! How this one withstands my negligence.
As for those Fuyckyoo caps, yeah, lost a couple motherboards to those things.

I have an earthwatts psu and so far have no problems.
I had to buy that earthwatts from a guy at a LAN party when my TPII suddenly kicked the bucket.

But in replacement of my TPII i got a Trupower Trio from Antec and i hope it will keep running well.

ive had this psu since 05....not a problem yet....noticed i said yet....lets see how long it last once i upgrade my system today.

Antec PSU has never on the top in all the comparison reviews I have read. I would look at lots of other brands before I look at them even if there are fleshing big discounts from of my face as they always do.
These are the ones I would check out: Seasonic, Enermax, Coolermaster, Corsair, and even this one:

Bruce: Coolermaster? I wouldn't touch them myself. As Danny mentioned, some Antec PS are pretty soild. I only have owned Antec, Enermax & now Mushkin (Topower OEM) just for back-up because of a soild price for 800 watt PSU. At least Antec stands behind their product line.

12v rail is really moving around alot....11.85 to 12.30 at times. I also noticed a good bit of heating coming out the back and it looks as if the fan is barely turning. this thing could go quickly with the new upgrade...i guess we shall see.

If you are using software to measure, I wouldn't worry, as software is utterly useless for measuring voltage,
however if you are measuring that fluctuation with an O'scope or a meter, I would start planning on getting a new PSU!
