ok so today i walked into my room to find my computer case and keyboard with rapidly flickering lights. as soon as i got closer i could smell that electronics burning smell. i immediately turned off the switch on the back of the power supply and unplugged it from the wall. earlier this morning it was making a quiet whine and i didnt think id heard it before and figured it was nothing but now it looks like i was wrong. i ended up unhooking it from the computer and plugged only the fans into the ps , just in case it decided to fry my mobo. again it made this smell. so now it looks like im out a ps for now.

any thoughts on why? ive had this ps since 2006 and its run perfectly fine. im not stressing it at all.
the current setup is:
athlon 64 4000+ socket 939
evga 7600gt
asus A8N-E socket 939
ocz platinum 2x512
wd caviar 160gb sata 16mb cache
lite on cd burner
lite on dvd rom
and the case lights with 2 led fans

It's a Smartpower. The Smartpower line of PSUs were well known for their above average failure rate due to a poor cooling design and caps choice. That quiet whine or squeal is usually the first sign of a dying Smarpower. Your PSU should still be within its 3 year warranty so RMA it back to Antec and you'll get a good quality Earthwatts 500W PSU in return.

so say i cant find my receipt...do i try to argue or just go for a new power supply

This is funny, cuz my SP-500 blew up today also! During gaming... CPU, RAM and Video Card are all OCed...

Just talked to a customer support, these models are already discontinued... so if you RMA yours you will get an EartPower 500 or NeoPower 500.

I think i will go ahead and do the RMA but as son as the PSU comes i will sell it and get something better for my system.

Ehhh i really liked the design of this PSU, two fans one is controlled by a mobo and 2nd one controlled by a PSU temperature...

:( my mobo is fried... that's at least the first thing i can identify is not working... And probably videocard too...... f****** b******!!!
