hi all
this is my first post here. i just thought id share an experience with a power supply

i bought Asus P5ad2 MB and an antec Neopower supply
the neopower will not keep the MB powered up, it shuts down after 20 seconds of power.

antec would not share any info of problems if they had any with the Neopower.
i found this out after 2 weeks of trouble shooting
i had replaced the mother board scsi card video card and a new power supply and still it was shutting down
this happend until i took my power supply off my old p4 and used it and the comp stayed powered up.

i ordered a noisetaker 2.0 power supply and it will be here monday.
i need this to power my x800 pci-e video card

thats whay i bought that stupid antec.

yea the PSU is defective cause I've used this PSU on 2 different machines, one being on one of my friend's rig and it's a fantastic PSU.

I would RMA or exchange it.

I ordered a Ultra 500 X-Connect, but the NeoPower seems to be better, so I'm going to order a NeoPower as well.

Id say there are 3 possibilities
1.Youve overloaded one of the split +12V rails with too much draw
2. Its a defective unit
3. its a signal issue similar to the OCZ Powerstream\Asus combo
where the mobo doesnt conform to the latest signal standards
http://www.pcguide.com/ref/power/sup/func.htm

your logic is flawed regarding the PSU itself till you crosspart it as well

standards are changing and unfortunately not all of them are being implemented in a timely fashion
as strange as it might sound, some PSU and mobos appear to be incompatible, but Ive yet to determine which combos and what workarounds are required

i have tried 2 neopower power supplies
and the same issue both times
then i hooked a 20 pin from my old P4 and it worked fine
and i had nothing on the board except the heat sink fan when testing the neopower and it would not stay powered up.

which is why I think it is likely a signal issue
try attaching a few HDD to the supply as a possible workaround

that was the case with the OCZ Powerstream and the Asus A7N8X

There is really no incompatibility issue. A7N8X board does not meet the
requirement of the BTX power supply standard which requires more load in
order to power up. Usually adding a couple of case fans or connecting a
drive will solve the problem easily.

in short the mobo was telling the PSU to shutoff
same reason you sometimes need a load to turn an ATX PSU on with the Grn to Blk trick

Using the Neopower with:

2 optical drives
2 HDD
3 case fans
1 northbridge fan
1 80mm HSF

And Prescott 2.8E Overclocked to 3.5mhz , for everyday general use.

Absolutly zero issues.

No problems -yet- with my NeoPower, ordered soon as newegg got it in stock which has been like 2 months i think.

DFI Lanparty NF2 Ultra, AMD XP3000+, 2x512 Mushkin PC3500LL, 3x160G Seagate SATA, 9700 AIW, 2xDVDRW,2x120mm LED Fans, 2x80mm LED Fans, and Dual CC lighting.

Yaa, Antec is one of those company's that I'm not hesitant to pimp around here. Great company with great products.

one off topic question but i think i would get a pretty good answer...

has neopower a 24pin power supply cable for the mobo???

thnx!

Yes :)

all that and a 12v waterpump.....no issues with the Neo; so far :)

I had a shutdown problem with my NeoPower when I put too big a load on the "fan only" line. With three fans it worked fine, with 4 fans it would shut down as the machine warmed up and the fans went faster. Apparently as they go faster they draw more current until the PS senses too great a load. Then total shutdown without any obvious reason or signal.

i dont know i think that it is just something with my motherboard and that power supply
because unless i got 2 bad neopowers (which i would think to be highly unlikely).
it just wont even keep the heatsink fan running.

i hope this 470w noisetaker 2.0 works better. I will find out monday when it arrives
i do like the design of the antec though with the removeable cables.

i am dying to see how my x800 pci-e is gonna run
this is my new comp that has been on the floor for 2 weeks now :( :

p4 3.4 lga775 1mg cache
asus p5ad2 premium motherboard
saphire x800 xt pci-E video card
seagate scsi cheetah 36g ultrawide 320 15k HD
plextor scsi cdrw 40x12x40
adaptec 39320a-r scsi card
antec neopower 480w power supply
thermal take xaser 3 v1000d super tower
1 gig of kingston memory

Frostea, I have a similar setup as you, and also got the NeoPower to power my x800 xt pci-e. Everything was running great, then later in the day the NeoPower decides to blow up. I don't know what it was exactly, but something in there made a loud pop and it doesn't work anymore. I now have my old PSU in my system and everything works fine (no freakin x800 though). Anyway, I give this PSU an F rating.

I'm guessing these are just a few rare cases, Antec PSU's don't usually go haywire.

That or just perhaps just kinks in a new product line I hope. I've always purchased Enermax's in the past and have been happy, but I was really looking forward to the modular aspect of the Neo.

You know if you accidently hooked a LED up to the power switch pins on the motherboard it will shut off after a few seconds. Never timed it but it will shut down the PSU.

Edit: err n/m I forget that was on my lanparty board with the built in reset and power switches

Personally, I ordered an Ultra 500 X-Connect, I hope that goes well. I will be writing a review on it soon.

Can anyone explain why my NeoPower made a sharp, loud popping noise and broke? Thankfully, nothing else in my computer was damaged, but I want to know if it was probably just a dud, or if it will happen again with a replacement?

funny thing now
i had the Neopower running my old p4
and i thought it was working but i was wrong it is not it is having the same problem.
it just dies

i still have both of them and tonite after work im gonna try the other one in the old p4 too.
if it is just 2 bad power supplies from antec im gonna be so pissed

personally i will never buy another antec psu again

Bruce your Neopower is just a piece of crap also.................

well i got the new power supply but im still having issues.
it stays running but has shut down a couple of times.
when i start it i dont get a post beep sometimes and it stays running but the monitor doesnt kick on.
or sometimes i get the post beep and the comp freezes on the Asus splash screen.

im thinking i might have bad memory?
or a bad lga775 chip

so i guess my next step is to replace the memory and when that doesnt work try a new lga775 chip
then i will have replaced every piece of hard ware in the damn thing.

this is such a pain because everything is so new i cant get it at local stores and i dont have multiples of stuff to test with :(

memory might be the issue?

Do you have another PSU to test it on your computer with? I haven't gotten my new NeoPower yet, but I put my old PSU back in and everything works fine.

Put a Neopower 480 in my 3800+ rig, and it's been going non-stop since Saturday. So far so good.

I have a ton of gear in my PC (4 HD's, 6800 Ultra, etc), and had some stability issues with my thermaltake 480 Silent Purepower (only 18a on the +12v rail). My stability issues are now gone with the Neopower 480, and I love how QUIET it is.

-k

yes i put the enermax noisetaker 2.0 psu 470w
and it keeps it running
and i have some corsair memory coming in tomorrow
which will hopefully end my woe's

Frostea, I'm getting a replacement NeoPower today, I'll let you know how it goes. If something goes wrong again, I'm going to have to blame it on something with the PCI-E video card.

Ok
the problem has been solved
i finally found out the issue.

So after my 3rd ASUS p5ad2 premium motherboard and the same problem and 3 weeks of level 2 tech support dealings and returning every part for new ones.
i called level 2 again and demanded to know the issues with this board AND THEN the tech for the first time tells me to plug my external speakers in and listen for the voice post since the board wasnt posting.
so we did and it said failure due to overclocking.
i read this on screen when it booted up before and told asus that and the tech said that it was just default settings.
but this tech instantly goes "oh i know what your problem is" he says there is some issues with memory.
he says that when using dual channel and their board you must go into the bios and manually set up the memory configuration. then he says contact corsair who i bought the memory from for all the settings (voltage, speeds ect.)and enter them.
so then corsair says i must flash the bios going from 1004 to 1006 and then he gave me the setting info(i dont know why but it was almost like pulling teeth getting the info from this guy).

so for some reason when i used one stick of corsair and the external speaker it booted fine posted and everything.
i had the kingston memory and had the exact same problem and i couldnt even get it to boot or post with one stick.
so there are some memory issues that they didnt tell me about for 3 weeks.
I am going to write a letter to ASUS and tell them what they did to me.(the tech that helped me gave me someones address to email to and he said i should tell them.
Im not sure but this motherboard is advertised and marked as plug and play.
and going into bios and setting memory voltages and temp and speeds does not seem like plug and play to me.

oh what a headache well now today my new vid card and extra cpu come in and im ready to go all i actually need is the new vid card.
i think i might just build another one with all the double parts i have and sell it. im loosing too much money in restocking fees and shipping charges.
so after i flash the bios tonite and everything is supposed to work right i just hope there are no new problems.
and i did have a problem with the neopower not working right.
from what i have seen there have been issuse's with it.

I design switching power supplies, and I'm intimately familiar with the sound. :D Something inside blew up. The only way to find out exactly what is to take the supply apart, but i'm assuming that you don't want to void the warranty you'll soon be taking advantage of....

Assuming that the PSU failure wasn't caused by other hardware, I wouldn't worry about it.

jesus! I hope nothing like this goes for me, I just ordered my neo 480 from newegg last night. Goodluck with ur box

Sometimes PSUs pop when something conductive floats through them and lands. We make carbon fiber where I work and I go through several a year because of this. Sometimes you can even see a flash when it goes.

For my question though, I replaced my ends with the ez-off Molex connections and I might have messed them up but I am not certain. The fan only plugs have two wires a black and a yellow. My panfolio case fans have two wires a red and a black. The wires do not match up when I connect them. Did I mix them up? Or do I need to? Or are the not designed to work with threes types of fans?

I am also experiencing the problem described in another post. I just completed a new build only to have to disassemble part by part, wire by wire to determine that the 4 pin 12v wire from the Neopower 480 into the ASUS P5AD2 causes a trip after about 20-30 seconds. It varies by a few seconds each attempt to boot. I have yet to complete a successful full boot. All other parts seem to power up when individually tested, at least until the trip. The PSU and CPU fans will run without the 4 pin 12v line plugged in and they continue to run until I shut the power off. Apparently, they run off of the power supplied by the 24pin main power connector.
