Antec NEOHE 550W initial problems, please help

hey all, just installed my new NEOHE into my rig, and after about an hour of wiring (took me forever to figure out how to get everything that needed a molex a connector) i finally boot it up. boots up fine using the overclock that i had set, so i decide to set it back to stock, just to make sure everything is ok. now comes the problem/error message:

when i boot up, it goes past the ASUS logo, then screen goes black and i hear a series of beeps and a message that pops up from the BIOS (says Phoenix BIOS and whatnot) The message says:

Warning: H/W Monitor Status Abnormal
Please Enter the SETUP to Check Voltage, Fan Speed or Temperature Status

so i click on Delete and go into the BIOS, and go to hardware monitor

I see my 5V line fluctuating into the red and out: Goes down to 4.78 in Red, and then back up to the 4.8's and normal

So i'm assuming my 5V rail is low? should i just go into hardware monitor and when it dips that low, hit enter and say to ignore that reading? because i've rebooted several times, each one with the same result. the message allows me to boot into windows fine and whatnot

checking ASUS Probe 2 (which i know isn't a good read for the most part), my readings are this:

+12V - 11.584 to 11.648
+5V - 4.784 to 4.945
+3.3V - 3.2 to 3.264
VCore - 1.392 (stock voltage) up to 1.5 for a second, which is weird since i'm running at stock

so far the 12V is the same as the readings i got with my 450w modstream at 11.648. but like i said, i know probe isn't a good read, and i don't have a MM to check (nor have i ever done it before anyway)

so any help/tips/thoughts on this issue would be greatly appreciated. thanks

oh and i only have 3 of the cables connected to the power supply, with one sata cable connected to my storage hard drive, and 2 molex cables power my raptor, case fans, fan controller and floppy drive, so it's not like i'm using all power this has to offer...
 
Sounds like you either got a bad PSU or your motherboard is misreading voltages. The onyl way to tell for sure is to test it with a MM.
 
ok...what's a relatively good, but cheap MM that i can get? and are there any good guides on how to use one to test the rails?
 
in the meantime, i'm going to run tests like prime and whatnot to see if the power supply is stable as is, before i spend money on a MM and test it out...
 
how would i test the 5V? because that was the one that was giving me the error message when booting up (at least that's my guess since it dips far enough down that it turns red)

ran an hour of prime at stock, no problems

then i ran an hour of OCCT, and i left the room for 10 minutes, came back and the computer had shut off on its own. temps had never went above 35C for the cpu and 30C for the mobo, so temps were fine....

so i turned the computer back on, and i still get the error message with the 5V rail dipping into the 4.7 range every few seconds (which is what's giving me the problem i'm assuming)...

so am i gonna have to rma this thing, or should i grab a MM online and test it out for sure...?

is this one from radioshack good? if so, i could probably run out tomorrow to get one at the shack down the street...

ok, sounds like i'll be goin to radioshack tomorrow to pick one up
 
so if i find that the bios and pc probe are reading the voltages wrong, should i just set the bios to ignore that initial "low" 5V reading at bootup?


also, i'm still confused by the fact that the pc shut down by itself after an hour of a torture test by OCCT...any ideas on that? (i'm running stock for everything right now)
 
yeah, that makes sense, just gotta stop worrying about it for now, as i can't do much about it till tomorrow

also, i just set the BIOS to ignore the 5V reading, and rebooted, no error message came up, so that was the culprit for the error.

will let you know tomorrow how the testing goes (hope i do it right lol). thanks for the help david.
 
ok, just the idle and load readings are important than? or should i do all the readings that he suggest in that guide? i'll do some more reading to make sure i get a good handle on how to do it, and will come back with the results tomorrow
 
ran the tests with the MM i got from radioshack:

Boot

11.88-11.89 throughout the entire boot process
4.87-4.88 throughout the entire boot process

Idle

11.89
4.87

Prime (only run for about 5 minutes on each rail)

11.88-11.89
4.87-4.88


only rail i didn't check was the 3.3V, but i don't feel like searchin for those wires...the 5 and 12V were the ones i wanted to check anyway.

so are those tests good enough? do i need to run on load for longer?

at this point, the rails look pretty solid to me, because that's running everything in my rig except for the one case intake fan i had to unplug to use it's molex connector. i'm also overclocked at 2.67GHz at 1.6v with my ram at 243mhz at 2.9v as well (the overclock i was running before), and my 2 6600gt's at 555/1110 each. so that's about the max stress i can put on the power supply and it seems to hold up pretty well.

david, or any other of the PSU experts, any comments or ideas? i just wanna make sure everything is running properly. if it seems like everything is ok, then i'll leave the BIOS as it is now, excluding the 5V rail from the hardware monitor, so i don't receive the error message that it's running low
 
Honestly it looks fine. There were many comments about the NeoPower also being slightly low yet stable and in spec. Seems to be the case here as well.
 
ok, thanks to both of you for your positive reactions lol. takes a little pressure off seeing that they may be low, but seem pretty stable. at least i know it's just a bad reading by the software and not the psu that's the problem.
