ok so i had a thermaltake TR2-430W in my main rig (see sig) for almost 3 years. i mentioned it on the forums here and was told by multiple users that this was not ok and that it will destroy itself and take my computer down with it. i had my cpu OCd to3.2 from 2.66 at the time. i OCd to 3.47ish and ran it fine like that (didnt run prime95 though) for a bit and then was convinced to buy an antec EA-650 to replace it. i kept it running at 3.47. since i installed the antec i have had random restarts about twice a week. never happened with the tr2. and just now i opened tf2, went to the bathroom, and when i got back it was powered off. i tried to turn it back on and no response. i unplugged, it, toggled the power switch, tried again. no response. then i unplugged it, turned off the switch in back, and left it. since then it clicked and lit up a few times, i assume from the capacitors somehow since it was not plugged into the wall. im afraid to try again. this is supposed to be a good psu. my tr2 was supposed to be crappy. why did it outperform this one by so much? and what is my antec doing now? i promise ill lower the OC when i get this thing running again, but why would this be the case? it makes no sense!

Dunno if that's how you always post/rant or if you've had a few beverages but my EA650 is a champ and eased my OC difficulties with no trouble since. Maybe you have shitty power in your place??

no thats how i post/rant when im convinced by someone else to fix something that isnt broken, and then the fix is the thing thats broken. id rather have my $55 and a working psu than no $55 and a dead psu. makes sense right?

so i plugged it back in and turned the switch on and its just sitting there clicking every couple minutes. computer wont turn on. just because your psu isnt broken doesnt mean that my psu cant be broken. im gonna switch it out for my tr2 real quick and see what happens.

ok so i took the ea650 out and used a paperclip to short the leads and it turned on and ran just fine. does this mean that i fried my motherboard then? or perhaps cpu? maybe both... :,(

edit: update: i just plugged my tr2 back in and it booted right up. gonna turn down the oc and then try the antec again. i guess this means that its def the antecs problem, not my mobo or cpu. what a shame i wasted my money on that thing. i hope it was just damaged by the previous owner or a result of my careless OCing and not due to poor quality.

you bought a used ea650 to replace a perfectly working psu?

lol my thoughts exactly at the time. but i was assured by numerous [H]ardmembers who are much more knowledgeable than myself that it was a must. now i have my old 430 back in my rig and my 650 sitting on my floor. gonna try it again then go to bed.

if your rig is working fine with the 430w, i would ask whoever u got the ea650 from for a refund. i bet the -5v line is fried. i have an old enermax liberty 500w with a bad -5v and the system it was in at the time would randomly crash and restart, but other times would work fine for a couple days in a row...i still use that power supply for leak testing my water cooling loops, but wouldnt dare use it in a system anymore.

it wouldnt hurt to invest in a power supply tester. if you have a local fry's or microcenter, you could probably buy one for around $15-20.

The ea650 is a pretty nice powersupply. I run mine on my overclocked quad, with crossfire and 10 hard drives (including scsi) and it runs great.

The EA650 and other modern PSUs do not have the -5V rail. It is no longer part of the ATX specification.

i clocked it back down to a 15% OC and it seems to be working fine again. i have no idea what happened. oh well.

I'm sorry that you ran into such a probelm with your Antec PSU after I convinced you that the TR2 would be a problem. To be fair though, it is a used PSU and it is a OC'd system. So shit like this does happen. As your system is working fine now, it appears to be just bad luck man.

Great psu on this end too. Shit like that does happen. Have you talked to antec cs yet?
