Hi Guys,

I want to add another SSD to replace my Intel 80GB X25-M v1 as my system drive (W7 x64 with sig computer). I plan to transition the Intel drive to a dedicated Lightroom 3 Cache and/or install games on it. Which SSD should I choose? Should I wait a bit more for Vertex 3?

I recommend the Intel 510 simply due to Intel's track record for reliability
 
Thanks Danny I will go intel (and possibly wait for the vertex 3 release to force a small price drop). Looks like OCZ has pulled a few tricks with their vertex 2 and I don't need any hassel. My original vertex 60GB is still going strong though in my wife's PC (system drive).
 
Yeah because of the recent bru-ha-ha about the OCZ SSDs swap, I'm not planning on recommending any OCZ SSD, even the Vertex 3, until I can trust them again. They were already on shaky ice with me over their stupid marketing of 1.65V RAM as "low voltage" and their fuck-up of the PC P&C PSUs

Intel gained that track record by making there own controller. The 510 series is not using there own controller. They are using the 2nd Generation Marvell 88SS9174. This is the newer generation of the c300's controller & the same exact controller as the Corsair Performance 3 series with its own tweaked firmware.

Personally I believe Intel is not going to make a product that isn't solid. But for an enthusiast this is like comparing an Asus x58 board to an Intel x58 board. The enthusiast is almost going to take the Asus because of additional features that Intel doesn't put in.

I Think its going to be interesting in coming months as that 2nd gen Marvell 88SS9174 controller is going to be facing the new SF for king of the hill.

True. But Intel would not have gone with that Marvel controller if it did not believe it was faster and of equal or better quality to Intel's own controller. At least I hope they did not.

So personally I believe that Intel is gonna make a solid SSD with the Intel 510 SSDs.

What about the million Vertex firmware updates when they first came out :) Makes you think, at least they are being responsive to the community... but are we beta testing here?

...and I loved PC Power and Cooling until they came along (now I go corsair). I loved my silencer quad 750, that was amazing value for the time. My 8800 GTs loved that setup.

Right hence I said I dont believe they wont make an ssd that isn't solid.

Intel caters to being solid. So does Corsair. Same controller in both (I haven't came across a "vs" between the 2 though). & The c400 will as well. Given the 3 Crucial who makes the least of the SSD's has the most experience with the marvel controller, Corsair is more enthusiast geared & Intel is geared towards being rock stable even if it sacrifices performance to do it. I am sure there will also be a couple more SSD's that end up using the same controller. So all I am saying is that at this point I wouldn't crown Intel king yet. Not all of the contenders have stepped into the ring. For all we know intel will have buggy firmware since they have only ever done there own controllers. Corsair has done firmware for how many different controllers now (I can think of at least 4 or 5 if not more). So while Intel does make solid shit they are not the ones with the most knowledge here (though it inst corsair either given the controller).

Also given the Benchmarks on the 510 I honestly would not pay that premium for it over the c300.. If it was 20-30 yea sure its definitly faster. But 90 bucks more is a stretch for sure. Hopefully the cost levels off on the 3g controllers when more hit the market.

You know what? I totally misread what you said. I thought you wrote that Intel wasn't gonna make a solid SSD. My bad.

lol.. That confused me..

Its no secret that I am not a fan of Intel. But that comes from there pricing, not there stability.. There is no way I would say anything Intel has ever made was crap or lacked stability. Now overpriced & lackluster at times is another story.. But always stable.
