Another successful x800 pro to XT mod - here's how

I just successfully modded my new Gecube X800 Pro to a 16-pipe XT PE without touching the card. You need a VIVO card for this to work. Here's how, although I'm still on hte Gigabyte BIOS. See no reason to flash anything else because the card seems to run everything without artifacts. Some of the links may be obsolete now, but anyway:

Boot from floppy to DOS prompt

Make BIOS backup:
flashrom -s 0 X800Pro_original.bin

Flash to Gigabyte XT BIOS:
gvf11 -P -F R80X256V_filename.F1

Reboot and make sure it has 16 pipes with ATitool in Windows

Boot floppy again

Flash to ATi XT BIOS:
flashrom -f -p 0 ATIX800XT-filename.bin

You need Gigabyte's XT PE BIOS that comes with its own flashtool, ATI FlashROM 2.37, and you can try using an ATI XT PE BIOS at the end. If the XT BIOS doesn't work for you, flash the BIOS backup you made instead.

Hey wiz does this work on BBA x800 pros? I got one when they first came out and I'm not sure if it's a vivo or not.

vivo = 1.6ns ram, big black chip on the backside and no lasercut on the core

reallllllly .. hrmm .. can anyone else confirm this? i'd deffinatly go x800 pro over the 6800GT i have on order right now if this is deffinatly 100%.

more info on where we can get these vivo x800's?

yep works fine .. we tested about 50 cards and only 2 had pipeline defects

...but your GPU Core and Memory Clock speeds are still the same as the Pro, right?

I would like to see some benchmark comparisons between a-
X800 Pro
X800 Pro with 16 pipelines
X800 XT PE

i couldn't find really any USA dealers with these cards. who has them and what's the MSRP (and what are people paying?) .... if I could get one of these guys for like $400-420 somewhere in there i'm pretty sure i'd order.

File searchmc.idq. Unspecified error on the first link.

and i'm in the USA the the canadian one's are of no use :)

No. It's a full XT PE now, with 16 pipes AND full XT PE core and mem speeds. However, some people have the 16 pipes but can't run their card stable at XT PE speeds. Guess I'm luckly. :) I have no benchmark comparison simply because I never ran 3dmark before the mod... did it right after I popped the card in... :)

Just out of curiousity, how do you go about discovering these things?

Usually from specialised forums, this time from the rage3d.com forum for tweaking and overclocking. Also there are several good Hungarian hardware forums that have reported the first successes.

when exactly did they report this? mine was running on 26th at 16p, some german forums reported it around the 30th

So to clarify this its only the geXcube Vivo X800Pro that will do this? But its pretty successful and its all 16 pipes and as fast or just under if your unlucky, XT pe speeds? :Sounds like a deadset 6800GT killer ;)
Well gonna cancel the ICEQ2 order after this.As i can get the GeXcube Vivo Right as of now instead of having to wait for the HIS800Pro.And if it mods to X800XT then thats good enough for me ;)

Was just looking at my local stockist and he has these cards for sale?
GeCube ATI Radeon X800 Pro ViVo 256meg Model X800PRO256 VIVO
was wondering if this is the exact model that the bios flash worked on?it has 1.6ns ram ;) If it is the card then im gonna go order this?

As I understand it, the flash will work on any X800 Pro VIVO card. People have been successful with Gecube, Sapphire, Powercolor, Gigabyte, etc. The manufacturer doesn't seem to matter so long as it has VIVO.

Yes, it is. Go for it.

That's not correct. The only ones so far to be 100% VIVO to XTPE flash only success are Powercolor and Connect3d. Sapphire and GeCube have confirmed failures (around half). The rest I'm not sure about.

That's the first I've heard of that. Where did you get this information from?

You are definitely wrong. But maybe you believe W1zzard, the programmer of ATITool, who wrote on the first page of this thread:

"yep works fine .. we tested about 50 cards and only 2 had pipeline defects"

those tested were club3d iirc .. sapphires indeed seem to have a lower success rate

From various forums. I think the most recent I saw was at www.ocforums.com Check around. This is a well documentated situation, just maybe not on these forums.

I'm no mod, but these days I would watch what I called people if I were you.

Do you have any other links? It seems like most people at the rage3d thread using sapphire cards have been very successful. http://www.rage3d.com/board/showthread.php?t=33766704&page=5&pp=30

To be frank I don't have the desire to dredge through sites to find posts. If you look around you'll see it. As to the Sapphire cards no one said there aren't any or even a bunch that will mod fine, it's just that it's not even close to a sure thing, more like 50/50. I would advise you get a powercolor if you're thinking about it. Then again, you can take your chances with the Sapphire. I hope it works out for you either way.

Take your own advice.

You have a problem. What exactly is unacceptable about my statement "You are definitely wrong?" As opposed to your reply to that statement.

Anyway, I consider this pointless quarreling closed. Back to the subject of the topic.

My only problem seems to be you. And if you don't understand *your* problem there's not much to be said.

From what I have seen, the saphire failures are due to some of them having laser cuts, making the softmod moot

I just ordered a Powercolor X800pro w/ Vivo retail. I should have it Tuesday :) Will let you know how it goes!
