Okay, it's coming very close to my brother's birthday...his gift will be my current CRT, my gift will be a new LCD!

So now it comes down to deciding which one to buy. First I was looking at the Dell 2005fpw. Widescreen is awesome and it seemed like it would be cool for gaming and everything, but I don't know about the response time. I just don't think that it will cut it.

The L90D+ is a favorite for gamers, and the price is great too. But I am not so sure about the color representation and the problems people have had with movies.

When I saw the Viewsonic VX924, I figured that was the one, but the color representation is the same as the L90D+, so I don't know if that would be good for movies either.

I am looking at the Viewsonic VP191B. It has 16.7 mil colors and 8ms(gtg) repsonse time. On Tom's Hardware
Video Games

Here again there's no contest. The 191b performed extremely well compared to the VG912. But since the VG912s is not the fastest 19" monitor we've seen, we compared it with the L90D+, which is closer to being at the front of the pack for LCD reactivity. The gap was closed, but we still found the VP191b more responsive overall. The L90D+ might possibly have a slight advantage in rapid transitions (black/white), but it's really a slim one.

But the VP191b, the L90D+ and the VG912 all offer good, saturated colors in games, which in itself improves the playing experience.

Finally, the immersion experience is very impressive with 19-inch LCDs. It's a whole different world compared to 17-inch screens!

Movies were better on the VP191b, but not perfect.

I think the price/performance ratio is still great with the L90D+, but I want to be able to watch movies and video.

Does anyone have any help with this mess? I think I still need to see more on the VX924 as well.

Hi Droban

The Viewsonic VP191B is based on a P-MVA panel as I'm sure you've picked up on from the reviews you have read at THG etc. It will offer much better viewing angles than the TN panels in the Hyundai L90D+ and VX924 which is really their main flaw. The colour reproduction is also slightly better on the VP191B thanks to the P-MVA technology and the fact it is a true 8bit panel, unlike the 6 bit TN film panels. Having said that, the colour reproduction is excellent on the Hyundai and the VX924 (see THG DeltaE colour graphs), but the VP191B manages to fuse the best bits of both P-MVA technology (viewing angles, colours, picture quality) with the best bits of TN film (response time),.

This would be high up my list if it were me, as it really offers the best of both worlds. Movie playback on modern fast TN film panels can be a little restrictive, partly because of the poor viewing angles and also because of unwanted video noise due to the dithering process and problems caused by the extemely low response times.

For info on the VX924 check out this thread. Sadly it isn't as fast as we were all hoping it would be and the VP191B offers the best pixel response across the whole grey>grey range.

Thanks for the reply.

I think I have to wait and see more about the VX924. The VP191B looks like an excellent monitor for everything overall, only thing lacking is the black to white response.

My main problem with it is how huge it is. The stand is very large and makes the LCD deep, which kind of defeats some of the purpose of having an LCD. But the slim bezel is a nice touch. And it has a lot of connections too, 1xDVI, 2xDSUB, and usb.

Also, it is around 70 dollars more than the L90D+. The L90D+ is an attractive monitor, and is great for gaming.

I think I'll go check out the local TigerDirect to look at the L90D+ some more, and see if I can get them to show a movie on it, and then decide if I want the VP191B instead.

I've been watching the reactions over the VP191 for the past few weeks, by now I'm pretty convinced that it or a panel of the same technology is what I want. I'd use it for text, pictures, movies and games. Planning to retire my CRT within two months.

the response time of the 2005fpw is great. I've been using a CRT up until 2 weeks ago when I got my 2005fpw. I'm a big gamer and ive noticed absolutely no ghosting at all in cs:source or mvp baseball 2005. its amazing how much more you can see by playing cs:s in wide screen.

If you can go and see either panel in person do this.

Set wallpaper to black. Open a window not fullscreen, about 4" x 6" will suffice. Grab said window with cursor and drag it back and forth quickly. This will show you ghosting, if you try and watch the window move. If you just look at the desktop while its moving you wont even notice it. If you can see it in 19" just as well as in the 20" then get the extra 1" for the same money.

This site links to a few reviews, and it really makes the VP191b look nice.

Still going to be a tough decision though, I still want to see more on the VX924 as well.

that's my site ;)

good plan to go and check out the L90D+ in person, it is certainly good for gaming, and if the viewing angles etc are not too bad for you then perhaps is would be better to save the money. The VP191B is an excellent monitor, but like you say, it is a bit chunky in the stand, shame Viewsonic haven't updated the design in a while. Would be nice to see the AUO 8ms P-MVA panel in something like the LG19180U! :D

got my LD90+ yesterday, first thing i did was load up a WMVHD video i downloaded from microsoft's site, i seriously don't know what all the fuss is about with this moniter and movies, it looked completly fine to me, but oh man is this thing bright! I had what people would call a "Dark CRT" before (i think it was starting to die, made buzzing noise and i would always have to max gamma in games, but i was used to it) at first the LD90+ was too bright for me, i set the brightness and contrast to 35/45 and 30/40 and now i am really liking it, i have 1 dead pixel and a little bit of blacklighting on the bottom right of mine but i ordered it from NCIX with a 30 day zero dead pixel garentee so a new one is going to be shipped to me soon. The backlighting isnt noticeable at all till you set it to a completly black background, i believe this backlighting may have something to do with the dead pixel because it is centered around that area of the pannel. Overall great screen and i will be even happier with it when the pixel perfect one arrives :).

PS. Viewing angles arnt great but good enough that you can lean back and relax and not be perfectally centered and still be able to play/browse.

Tom's has the VX924 review up.

So it is faster than the VP191b, but not as good for video watching. I just wonder how bad the video noise really is.

Both monitors can be found for about the same price.

So it's either the VX924 being faster and more aesthetically pleasing.

or the VP191b having better colors and more accuracy while being bulkier.

and the L90D+ still has it's place pricewise. I think ill try to find a VP191b, or a model like it to see how bulky it really is.

For me the LD90+ was a no brainer as i was not willing to spend the extra cash for the other two LCD's, in canada ive seen the V191 from $599-$699 while i got my LD90+ for $455 and i sit right in front of the thing so viewing angles are good enough form my vantage (spelling?) point.

So it is faster than the VP191b,.

as Mistar has said, it isn't as fast as the VP191B overall. The 4ms response time is only reached on a small section of the grey transitions and at the ISO black > white (at the code 255). The rest of them are much slower reaching over 30ms in some cases!

take a look at the comparison graph:

vx924_latency.gif

the VP!91B remains below 15ms on ALL changes, the VX924 is fast on some, but slow on many others. Overall the VP191B is faster

Video games were no problem either; the monitor was very reactive, especially during abrupt transitions. But the difference between this model and the VP191b/s wasn't dramatic. On the other hand, it's a visible improvement over standard 8 ms panels like the Hyundai L90D+. The lack of accuracy in transient states is not really bothersome.

It's faster in games, but not by too much.

What happens is there is a loss of accuracy to keep the reactivity very quick. So...
What Does It Mean To Users?

These results have to be put into perspective. Our measurements of fall time produced very low values - sometimes below one millisecond - which means that the remanence of a light object on a black background has all but disappeared. And in itself, that's already an impressive result. That's what we could see, for example, when we moved the mouse cursor around on the desktop. We saw no ghosting, no trails, no loss of cursor brightness... nothing.

Everything will depend on how you use your monitor. Since the phenomenon is transitory, the static qualities of the display aren't affected. Drawing or photo retouching won't suffer from the phenomenon. For gamers, the impact should be limited, because they naturally pay less attention to precise color rendering during fast games. But multimedia performance, and video in particular, are likely to suffer.

AKA, the VX924 is faster in games(with less accuracy) and the VP191b is better with video.

You can't call it a loss of accuracy. It overshoots because of the voltage applied and it is an immediate state which is not visible to most people.
Trailing is though on other monitors but trailing and the immediate state caused by Overdrive is not the same.

You should try and read this thread where we discuss the matter:

Well I think I have to get the VP191b over the l90d+ and vx924 if the video playback is that bad anyways.
