Ok, this is the 2nd WD 1TB drive that has pissed it's pants on me long before it should have.
Both of them were the EARS "Green" HDs. These are not reliable!

I have used WDs for years, and generally found them more reliable than the other brands, but it seems thoses days are over. :mad:

Can anyone recommend a HD that will LAST??
 
sorry to hear. I have a wd 1tb ears , and haven't had any trouble with it. Its the one with the 4k write sector.

I used the program that came on the disk (or website) to lock the heads in the 512 kb sectors since i was using winxp.(as was recommanded in the manual for xp use 512kb sectors) and hasn't died on me yet.

I've got a samsung ,maxtor , wd drives , none have failed yet. Guess it's the luck of the draw.

Back when I was in the computer business ('bout 6 years ago) a Samsung or Maxtor drive was a joke. We didn't dare use them.
It was WD or Seagate. WDs were very reliable we had relatively few issues. This is my 3rd EARS Green drive and I"m not impressed to say the least.
They were inexpensive but it appears they cut corners because the reliability isn't there.
The first one failed within 2 months. Intermittently the drive would not how up as a SATA device. Went through the WD website to get a replacement. But I had to buy another drive to keep the system up. I figured it was just a fluke, bad luck so because the drives were cheaper than the rest, I got another. (current) Now this one has bad sectors all over. I have it with Linux and winXP on it and it fails to boot the XP partition. Intermittently the system can't find the drive. The other drive went into my media player. But Don't think it is doing so hot because I keep finding corrupt files.
I ordered a Segate 500GB drive last night to replace this one.
 
yes thats also why i got the ears cause it was cheap :p

More reliable? Try Reds, or if you can deal with being limited to <=2TB drives, Samsung has always been my favorite. I'm not sure if Seagate has since changed the manufacturing process for Samsung drives, or if they are the same drives with a new owner. If they HAVE changed, then I'd stick to non-Green WD drives.

A lot of people like the Greens too, but I'm not one of them. Not by a longshot. And most drives with 1TB platters are unreliable, it seems. Hitachi was my second favorite drive after Samsung for a while, but the 7k1000.C might be the last drive I trust from them for now.
