I can relate, I had an ASRock die on me a few months ago.

Grab a GB or Asus, sell the MSI once you get the RMA back.
Reliable motherboard companies are dropping like flies IMHO. :eek:

I dunno what to say.

I'm running two of the ASRock boards and they have been fine.

Might verywell have been the boards, but id also say to put extra cooling on anything with a heatsync. We are running these systems hard. Keep 'em cool.
 
I second Gigabyte as I have been impressed after I had an Asus board short out on me in my last gaming rig. However, I suspect that we are driving these boards harder than anyone else out there. In the business world, they might be running 24/7 but they are likely not running the crazy overclocks you guys are.
 
No more MSI mother boards for me this is the 3rd one this year.

I am going to suggest if you keep killing boards, there is likely another problem besides the boards.

So tell us what the board is and what exactly you are running on it?

right. That's how I killed my MSI mobo. I stuck an X6 in there, cranked up the vcore to 1.45, the OC to about 3.8ghz, and started to smell something funny......:)

I don't think a $30-$40 budget 785G mobo was designed to OC a six core chip like that

Exactly. This is equivalent to buying a Festiva, taking it down to the track, driving the shit out of it all day then griping when it breaks. Of course, I am not sure this is what was happening.
 
I bought an MSI P55-GD65 back in October and it's been running an O/C'd i7 24/7 with two video cards and two HDs since then. That's also on an APC 1500VA UPS.

Of course now I probably just jinxed myself ;)

This was my personal "Board of the Year" pick for 2009. Glad to get good feedback on longevity.

that's a nice looking board, and I think that illustrates the point Kyle made above:

A lot of a mobo's longevity (and its price) depends on the construction. You can't expect a mobo with cheap VRMs for example to last a long time in a stressful environment.

Lehmann, I would be curious to know which MSI boards have failed on you.

Yeah definitely agree with that one. I've been rolling a quad in my ip35 pro for 2.5 years now and 99% of the time its run at 3.56ghz and 1.32vcore folding. Yet my buddy had a crap ECS 775 board that he ran a dual core core 2 in and that thing started flaking out last month. He got it as a fry's combo and paid less for both the cpu and mobo than i paid for the ip35 tho. So I guess it depends on what you're looking for. He upgraded to a super cheap gigaH55 board and a i5 750, we'll see how long that lasts in the texas summers.
 
You get what you pay for no doubt. Given the nature of Folding, I would not expect any budget board to give you good folding service, especially when overclocking.
 
I think it's the luck of the draw. I've had cheapo open box motherboards last years folding heavily overclocked and I've had high end Asus/Abit/GB boards die in less than a year folding. Of course the opposite is true as well.

Lately I've made sure I have good airflow and good power supplies with UPS backup I've been rock solid on all motherboards I fold with. Keep the temps in control and I think most name brands will last a long time.

I just lost a EVGA board and video card in two days!
Motherboard on my folding work computer.
Video card on my Folding/Gaming rig at home.
Glad I can RMA both of them. Just need to take video card out of work and bring it home.
I do have a back up motherboard, but it doesn't O/C well.
 
running an x6 overclocked on that msi 785 board is about as bad as me running my phenom II 940 overclocked on my biostar Tforce 780G m2+ which was never designed to run my phenom II 940 but biostar screwed up and released a beta bios before the phenom II's came out that didnt have the 95w limit and supported the phenom II's.. board finally died on me after 14 months of 100% load.. ill definitely be buying another biostar board after that.. especially if i can get a board that has a 125w mosfets to run a 180w processor that long they deserve my money.. :p ill never buy asus ever again though..
 
You'd be surprised. It really depends on the specific board, what CPU you use, how far you push it, and luck of the draw. But I've seen plenty of budget hardware being used for long periods of time without any issues.

case in point my 60 dollar Biostar 780g motherboard i posted about above your post.. :p
 
I think keeping parts cool is the biggest factor (unless a 3 year old soldered you mobo using his first "wee-tikes soldering gun kit"). As fast as some of you where killing off the ASRock boards I've had 2 running non stop at 100% for about 3 months now with some heavy OCs.

Hugh (the Borg Geordi Laforge befriended and my other i7 rig) has about 2 months of uptime running -bigadv. I just haven't had an issue..... I do have however everything short of a boxfan pointed at the thing.

I think you can consider it luck of the draw when DO get one of these low end boards that handle the abuse that overclocking and Folding dish out.

To poo-poo a brand of motherboard because the cheap-o could not do it is something entirely different. Again, high end expectations on low end equipment.

In that sense, you may consider it luck to actually find a product that can handle the abuse, but I think that's more a product of good design than anything else.

your thinking to much about intel.. on the AMD side when its a budget board.. it is a budget board.. the majority of manufactures will not use high end parts any boards under 100 dollars.. so its luck of the draw on what you get.. intel side of things they mostly use the same hardware they just add less features to keep the cost down..
 
I'm sorry for your loss; I'm sure your motherboards are now watching over you in heaven! I will pray for your future mobos which hopefully will not suffer from dysentery.

I'm also really relieved that I have a trusty ol' Biostar tpower i45, I always like to get a nice mobo since it is like a spine to me...And we all know you can't do crap with a broken spine!

Again, it depends on the board. I have seen lower-end AMD boards with fairly robust circuitry.
 
Damm missed my own posted. First time the boss has posted in one of my threads. the board was the msi-p55-cd-53. Over clocks the the i5-750 great. Just cant seem to handle the i7-860's power draw @ 1.85 under load 1.41 idle 190X21 4ghz true120 temps in upper 70's to low 80's depending on room temp. None of them lasted over 12 hours under the 860.

I really thinks it's MSI. The only two MSI boards i've owned have both been high end (k9A2 and the GD80 i think) ones and they usually died after a little less then 6 months. MSI was less than helpful as well. I have mid level asrock and a high end asus board folding for 6 months straight now without a problem.

I've owned over 6 or 7 mid-high end MSI boards, and never had one die on me...As Zero will agree, I believe 49.9% is a good quality PS that has ample power with no ripple when loaded..

Hell, I sold Kendrak my P35 Platinum which ran my Q6600 @ 3.4V (1.45V) and my 4850 both at load 100% 24/7 F@H and WCG and never had a hiccup...Just my $.02
