Hi there,

I am living in a communal apartment and i have been watching some movie late at night. I think it made my neighbor that lives below mad because he knocked his ceiling a few times while i am watching the movie. The volume was not that loud so i think it must be the subwoofer rattling his ceiling.

So i lowered the sub volume from the my speaker control panel to minimum and by the way i am using Creative Gigaworks S750 with Audigy 2ZS. I also lowered the sub volume through the Creative control panel in the system tray to minimum which is zero. So i think that should not disturb my neighbor anymore.

But he still knocked on his ceiling. So i decided to listen carefully to my subwoofer and i still felt some air coming from the hole in the woofer and the floor still rattled a little bit, which i think is not much but my neighbor is still unhappy with it. And i though i set it off in the control panel.

I know i can lower the amount of bass from the control panel but i would rather not to do because i still would like the bass coming out from my satellites. The question is there any way i can turn off my subwoofer completely so that i can enjoy my late night movie session without disturbing my neighbor?

Any help from other user of S750 or anyone would be be appreciated. Thank you

isolatie it from the floor, either sit it on a sand bag or use cones as feet. also stuffing the port on yoursub with cotton will also help

what time is late at night?
do they have a job where they leave early in the morning?
i would sugest going and talking to them asking their schedule
so you can atleast try and be considerate and keep it quiet when they go to bed...

and here is my personal experience with neighbors...

hahahah
funny you should mention this...
i ran into the same exact situation with the bastards who live above me.
the first night i was there, i tried to fall assleep at around 11:30 because i had to be at work at 7 am. so what did they decide to do? play ghetto ass rap music all night! they do have a sub and when you are trying to sleep it is woprse than say high end noise.
annyways to make a long storry short, when me and my room mate both brought our klipsch 5.1 ultras in and hooked them up and streamed music and movies via my laptop, the tides sureley did turn....
and not to mention the squeakey ass floors in the house! we hear every step they take...
to make them stop stomping around, a cycleing of my trusty sar1 usually did the trick.
but today my roomie and i got a punching bag(watter filled) and its hella noisey when we hit it, because the thing rocks back and then slams on the floor, makeing the house shale a bit...
cliffs
1.) dont piss off your neighbors
2.) if you do piss your neighbors off expect retaliation to be 10 fold worse.

Id probably go for these, probably in this order.

Look into positioning. Putting the sub in a corner, especially if the port is facing into a wall will make the bass boom considerably.

Tip it on its side, that way the sound isnt driven directly into the floor.

Sit it on a Paving slab to isolate it a bit more. That way youll prob still be able to have some bass without it travelling.

Go into the audigy control panel, belive its the eax section, and set the crossover and volume as low as possible. If you set the crossover below 25hz you wont be able to hear anything from the sub at all.

Its possible the sound from your sattelites is travelling through the floor also.

The other option is to try making yourself an adaptor for the sub out plug to remove the sub channel. But thats a bit extreme.

Hope thats of some help.

Why dont you just disconnect the center/sub jack from the back of the soundcard and set your movie to play back the stereo sound track?

Here is a novel idea, why don't you get some headphones

I would definately recommend some Sennheiser HD650's with an amp. You can have it all then.

dont you think the 650's are a bit overkill for watching dvd's?

Exactly EngineChauffer.... Im either playing games or listening to music until 3 4 5am in the morning. My poor neighbor never said a thing but I knew I was bothering her. So went got some 5.1 headphones.. now she even smiles at me...

having happy neighbors is a good thing..

get head phones.. easiest way because you NEVER know what your neighbor will do, some ppl are real assholes so just dont even step into a bad situation, yeah you maybe well with in the noise limits but you can't expect people to think or act reasonably.

I switched to HD497s for movie watching when the subwoofer on my Altec Lansing 2.1 was pissing my brother off a few years back. Now, that's all I use.

It's a really nice feeling to just sit down and watch a movie with comfortable headphones on.

Then again, it's my personal opinion that you shouldn't have a massive stereo when you're living under someone else's roof. It's just common courtesy.

I see you spent a large amount of money on these speakers, so use them during the day and then switch to headphones at night.

Headphones: not just for hiding your hardcore sheep-porn fetish anymore. ;)

If you can hear your neighbor knock on the ceiling your speakers are not loud enough.:p

If that doesn't work your best solution is to get a pair of good headphones or put some insulation between the sub and the floor.

I live in a house, but I still upset my neighbors that live even across the street from me with my PB12-Plus/2. I got in a fight with one and said that since I'm not exceeding the sound levels stated in the local noise polution laws (close though when its turned up near reference), I'll listen to it however loud I want until I can't (10:00 PM). I've listened to stuff even at low volumes after 10:00 PM and had other neighbors come knocking on my door. So far, no calls to the police... LOL

So I guess SVC's ads are right on huh?

"Get to know your neighbors"

LOL that cracks me up. So true, so true.

Had the same experience with my PB2+ a couple weeks ago at my house =] I was throwing a small party for my friends, listening to some music @ ~105dB, and the neighbor came over and complained he could hear it in his living room :D It is sort of interesting when you can feel the outside of the house vibrating during LotR though.

Heh my yamaha YSW-215 is just as bad for allowing me to meet my neighbors....record was LoTR as well, ehn it managed to rattle 2ft thick solid concrete walls, and solid conrete floors.

At least the neighbor was cool about it "Hey man can you turn it down a bit, the wife is getting crankier than her usual..other than that, pretty f**king impressive man!" we ended up talking HT setups for a good two hours :)

They certainly mixed in a goodly amount of bass in the LotR trilogy. Not only copious quantities, but some great, very low stuff too. There's a good amount of info on those movies in the 20hz and below range...where bass starts to really get exciting :D

SVS PC+ at that dorms last year... annoyed neighbors TWO FLOORS DOWN! Try beating that! LOL.... :p

Pinipig: I can believe that =] If your dorms are like ours, they are made of concrete, and vibrations would go right through them.. not to mention the incredibly small amount of air that that beast would be filling =]

Back in 1995, I had the cops called on me after blasting some STP my Carver M1.5t 1200 Watt Magnetic Field Amp and my pair of Kicker 15" woofers. The cop said several people in the neighborhood called it in and he could clearly hear it from inside is patrol car. It was around 2PM on a Saturday. Oh, and that was the day I was moving in...real good way to start of in my new place :D

My klipsch allowed me to piss a few people off... Now I just look into headphones....Also my receiver has a night mode which allows normal tone but keeps bass down on those loud explosions, loud music scenes...

I have a good ole' cerwin vega sub and a neighbor that is hard of hearing. I still avoid cranking it and use headphones at night.

When I got my z680's to test them out after burning in for like 3 days, I decided to blast them... my friend from two floors up ran downstairs and was amazed exclaiming "What the f*** was that? Was that you?! Holy crap!"

Good thing my don that term was really lax...
