Well I have a Samsung laptop. my angry ex decided to put her foot through the screen . I thought whatever and plugged in the hdmi ... but it doesn't even post on hdmi the back light for the monitor comes on and fans spun up . any ideas?
 
I don't know about samsungs but you should have a function (fn) + f4 or f5 (the key should have a little dual display icon on it)

once the laptop is booted newer laptops should also auto popup the display, but the display mode function should work without depending on that.
 
I tried with no luck usually with hdmi plugged in. it would post on the external monitor bios included. now. Nothing.
 
Lol. we still remain on speaking terms. we have to because of our 1 year old little boy.
 
Try to let the laptop boot up into windows then hit the "Windows Key" plus the letter "P" together. Then hit the "Down Arrow" once and then the "Enter" key. That should enable duplicate mode on the external display.
 
there might be other damage... typically GPU will clone all displays on bootup...
 
Crack it open and disconnect the ribbon cable that goes from the mainboard to the display. Likely something is shorting out in the display and may be keeping the machine from booting properly.
 
Boy, she must have been a pretty angry woman to have done that :-D sorry for the damages though.

I missed the part about you staying on good terms and having a 1 year old baby, if it changes you could always play the "lets pretend mommy's black eyes and missing teeth were caused by her being a kick boxer" scenario ?

I'll agree on the shorting out. Newer laptops just have one ribbon cable and removing it is typically pretty painless. What model do you have?
