It looks as though Amp’d Mobile is facing a $100,000 fine from the FCC for failing to protect consumers' personal calling records from thieves.

The FCC has proposed such fines against at least three other U.S. companies since January 2006 for failing to comply with rules requiring that consumer phone records be protected by internal safeguards. The FCC promised "aggressive, substantial steps" to crack down on phone companies that fail to protect such records.

Thank you FCC for making a fine example of Amp'd Mobile.

I'm sure others will learn that they need not spend millions to institute good security when the fine is only $100K.
 
Ahh yes the cost of doing business.

Millions in security vs occasional 100k fine.. "i'll take the Fines for 100k Alex"..
 
Heh, look at professional sports, especially Ron Artest of the NBA. This is obviously only one of many fines for Ron, heh.

ROCHESTER HILLS, Mich. — Indiana Pacers players Ron Artest, Jermaine O'Neal and Stephen Jackson were sentenced Friday to a year of probation, community service and a fine for their roles in one of the worst brawls in U.S. sports history.

And we all know about other players who get paid millions over several years having dinky fines for doing pretty bad things.

It's almost like these fines are really fees for breaking the rules.

"Hey, Amp'd, you may have let thousands of customers' information leak to thieves."
"What'll it cost?"
"I mean, these peoples' lives are now at risk. Families, single moms, children, their identity could be compromised, their financial information abused, among other horrible possibilities."
"Okay, okay, what'll it cost?"
"Don't you get it? You've violated many of your customers. You could cost creditors countless hours of correcting any fraud and wrongdoing with their information. You could be responsible for causing needless headaches and hassle all because of your security shortcoming. All because you couldn't spare a measly amount of money from your millions and millions to ensure your customers' information was protected."
"C'mon."
"That'll be $100,000."
"Do you accept quarters?"
