I JUST FIGURED OUT HECTORS PLAN

"We want to use capital in a more efficient way instead of building a factory by ourselves," said Ruiz.

Perhaps the partnership with TSMC will allow the development of a soi bulk process that amd can use in fab 38. this would allow them to do contract jobs in fab 38 thus using that facility to the hilt that would allow them to get a piece of the bulk fab pie.

another option is to setup fab 38 as a bulk process fab and move all the unused equipment to the new york building. (highly unlikely)

i honestly think amd will build 2 fabs in ny just like Germany has 2 once the one usa fab is up and running i expect a second one to be announced perhaps one side would be a soi bulk process tandem and the other would be the cpu powerhouse or a mix and match

.DISCUSS

Most likely true. If they can get other companies to contract through them, then they can use the extra cash to upgrade fabs or save a bit and build a new fab. AMD seems to be looking for more ways to make the fabs pay off. Hopefully it works out for them as they can use the cash, maybe they can make enough to actually try marketing again. Either way I expect AMD to do much better next year.

Uh, no.

AMD is having trouble getting enough money to pay for operating expenses as it is.

They already sidetracked with ATI, and are still trying to navigate their way out of that minefield.

2008 is about restructuring and coming up with a good cost-reduction plan - not playing with fire again or doing something stupid like entering the contract-foundry business.

As i stated this is purely speculation with hector playing his cards so close to his chest though anything is possible and amd will not give up that ny fab the deal gives them too much. the deal with TSMC behind the scenes could be a development of a soi bulk process that amd could take back to its idle fab and put it to good use.

Idle fab?
ROFL!

I hope you where joking....

i am not all of amd's chips are coming out of fab 36

# Fab 38 is ramping down 200mm production and utilizing 300mm capacity to augment Fab 36 output.
# Fab 38 is expected to operate as a discrete 300mm fab in 2009.

furthermore

http://www.xbitlabs.com/news/other/...nductor_Industry_UMC_s_Chairman_Emeritus.html

"For instance, Advanced Micro Devices, the world’s second largest producer of x86 microprocessors which has had capacity constraints for years, said recently it would slow-down the activation of its Fab 38 due to slowing economy and negative seasonality."

the above proves along with the TSMC agreement that fab 38 is currently idle at this time idle = not producing product for sale

the real kicker to all of this is what if the fab is idle but is currently getting ready to be tooled for ibm's 32nm process. or a bulk soi process. The way i see it that is the only way they will keep up with intel on the nm nodes. this would explain the agreement with TSMC so they can idle a fab with out having supply constraints on its processors and convert the idle fab to the next node asap.
