AMD Zacate

anyone got the mini-pcie pinout for that asus board?

yea just saw it today...

i heart this mobo so [H]ard!!!

i have the intel atom version (check my sig for my HTPC specs), would it be worth it to swap out mobo's? meaning would i see noticeable or minor differences in actual performance? my wife and i mostly use it for streaming content from netflix and hulu.

Wow, nice board. Wish I didnt see that now.. :/

I was going to get the Gigabyte board, but i like that this has on-board wireless and that cooler is nice.

I finished setting up the Zacate rig for my parents to use as a media streaming box. Unfortunately, I don't think it's fast enough to do Netflix. I was getting bad stuttering and occasional hiccups in the stream, although the CPU usage was hovering around the 50% mark. I think the current version of Silverlight doesn't support GPU acceleration on Zacate yet, and the fix will be in Silverlight 5 which won't come out till the later half of the year.

On the plus side, 7.1 LPCM audio over HDMI works fine. However, as others may have mentioned, it's only HDMI 1.3. Hello AMD, it's 2011. Why are you guys still stuck in the past? Even my el cheapo $100 Sony blu-ray player supports HDMI 1.4.

This is disappointing if in fact you didn't have a network.internet problem. I am researching a new build for myself and Zacate was a heavy option for me. Looks like Ill be going the I3 micro ATX route now as you are not the first person to say this about this Zacate all in one boards. Also seeing a lot of memory issues.

Seems odd.. doesn't atom handle netflix ok? Hard to believe that a more powerful CPU would struggle with it. Hopefully it'll get resolved quickly if true, but even so, this is a new product and there are bound to be some hiccups

the CPU/GPU probably aren't powerful enough to do 3D well anyway, so whats it matter? AMD probably took a look at market adoption predictions and realized that only a few jerks with too much money to spend really went after 3D, and that everyone else is happy in flat-land. If it saves me money on Zacate (even if it actually ran 3D well), then I don't care

I'm really interested to see the performance of these with tuners like the Ceton InfiniTV 4. I know it's a really off chance, but if anyone has tried this combo how has it been working out for you?

considering how new the Zacate is, and how hard it still is to get your hands on a ceton, I doubt there are too many people out there running both

i have a ceton card, but i am now running a X4 840 CPU..... a far cry from zecate ;D

That ASUS Deluxe board is damn near perfect:

Passive
On-board wireless
USB 3.0
5 x SATA 6
Bluetooth adapter on back

Now to get my case and picoPSU

I just placed an order for the PRO version of this board. Didnt need the wifi or other deluxe features. I fought with myself for days on building an AMD x4 machine with a 5xxx card but the price was climbing steadily way too high and the chances of me using this box for gaming was pretty slim.

Hopefully all works when I get it....... in 1-3 weeks :(

anyone got a zacate they want to let me borrow? :D
I seriously considered building a new zacate rig and then trying it out with my ceton, but I realized I have pretty much zero use for another HTPC and this one is completely fine already... I guess logic wins for now, but something mini-ITX and easier on power would be fantastic.. at about 1/3 of the power draw of my current rig i'd be alot more willing to leave a zacate on 24/7

yeah -- i'm probably going to build a second htpc (for the ski house) and will do the e35m1-i deluxe... just need to wait for the tax return to show up to justify, lol. that one won't have the ceton in it, but i'll definitely test it out with the main htpc prior to putting it in the habey case ;)

so we'll have an answer in a couple weeks if someone else doesn't get it first.

That looks like a great little build.

Though even as a Lian Li Fan (I have 2 LL mITX cases & a LL mATX case right now) I would have gotten the Habey EMC-800B Black case over the q09. Its jsut got a better overall look to me. I dont really like the extra ports on the front of the case for HTPC use.

To be honest I wish this stuff was out when I put together my HTPC. I would have totally opted for a Zacate setup over my current i3 HTPC.

I would choose the MSI board since any passive cooling needs some active chassis-cooling which is nearly impossible in an mini-itx chassis.
However the german magazine c't just tested all Zacate boards and the msi is the loudest with 1,9 sone which is just horrible!
Some smart guys already ripped off the lousy 40mm fan and installed an 80mm fan on top of the cooler, which works like a charm. However, the height of the whole cooler is now about 70-80mm (including the 80mm fan of course) which means it does not fit into the mini-itx chassis anymore.
It just a shame!! Any ideas btw?

I am sure its possible to pull it off & attach something along the lines of a zalman flower style HSF or even a stock intel unit with the fan turned town. Either way it would be overkill & very quiet.. Hell a Bug shuriken with no fan would probably still work.

Maybe get a bigger case? One that actually has decent cooling?

I'll never understand trying to cram PC parts into super tiny cases and then wonder "how come my temps suck?" or "why is it so loud?"

I always thought the whole purpose of Mini-ITX is to "cram" it into tiny chassis...
It's just the cooling of the actively cooled Zacate Boards is miles aways from being ideal.

heh.. I had a D510 funning completely passive & no active cooling in the case. I Could pop the side off at any time & reach in there & grab the HSF & never too hot to touch. & That HSF isnt near as robust as the asus board is. Hell it didnt even look as good as the ECS mITX zocate

So For those that already have zocate boards. How is the NetFlix playback?

ASUS e35m1 pro

Netflix is flawless. I bitstream audio and play my blu-rays just fine also.

This setup has plenty of power for an HTPC and even some extra oomph for cleaning up the picture on DVD upscaling and de-interlacing.

I thought I was running a low power setup before but now my HTPC idles at 27w. Wow, just wow.

Good to know, I saw a couple posts about it stuttering on netflix hd.

I just got the same board, havent read the whole thread yet, but I am having some major issues streaming from netflix.

Unwatchable choppy , using hdmi/ bigscreen tv to computer connection.

OK maybe you can help me out here.

Netflix is far from flawless on my setup.

15mbps wireless connection (high end router).

I ran lord of the rings streaming movie from netflix, it is filled with stutters and jitters, especialy when the camera pans.

Have you done anything special, like updating the bios? What is your current setup? Operating system and all?

Again I reitirate that netflix is far from flawless, at least for me. I would like to fix it.

Also interested in any potential fixes for Netflix stuttering. I have 20Mbps download so it's not the Internet connection. I'm using the MSI Zacate board w/ 4GB of DDR3-1600 and Windows 7 x64. I think Netflix streaming works ok for SD content but HD content is giving it problems. I just chalked it up to Silverlight not supporting GPU acceleration in Zacate yet. Like the above poster, I have it hooked up to a HDTV using the HDMI port (well actually, it goes through the Onkyo receiver first, then to the HDTV) at 720P (ancient HDTV).

Oh, by the way, the MSI 40mm fan is indeed noisy. I fixed it by ripping off the 40mm fan and using an Antec spotcool instead.

Good to know about the fan. I have the passive cooling board so no issues there, other than increased size ( I believe)

Very interested in this thread, hope people respond to it.

Have you tried hard wiring it? I'd eliminate network issues first even if you have super duper wireless.

Would it be stupid to cram that ASUS board into a KT-400? I'm thinking a couple 120mm fans and I'd be done and have an efficient HTPC.

I not sure if I can stream netflix due to being limited to DSL anyways.

Netflix will stream DSL depending on what your DSL connection is.
