AMD working on Tonga GPU

This seems like information anyone could have guessed at if you've been paying attention to the problems with foundries and 20nm, honestly.

I don't know about that. Going with GF as the foundry partner for this is quite a shakeup.
 
AMD never went with gloflo in the past because their nodes werent up to speed, this has changed with 28nm, and it appears they will get 20nm fro GPUs online before TMSC as well.

I was referring more to the GPU itself. Since 20nm is basically dead in the water for GPUs right now, reworking an existing design (GCM) on 28nm for improved power efficiency (a la GeForce 750 Ti) is really the only option AMD has.

I don't think it matters to the end user where the GPU is manufactured, although I admit I did miss the whole TSMC vs Global Foundries bit. But AMD used to own GloFo so it's not that surprising. Both AMD and NVIDIA have been stuck waiting on TSMC for a while now.

That only counts on the CPU side of things. AMD/ATI has never manufactured a GPU at GF, and the processes at TSMC and GF aren't nearly as similar as you might think.
 
Changing from TSMC to GloFo is a huge gamble. If GloFo stumbles, AMD could end up toast. When you are manufacturing on the same process as your competition then you will never be disadvantaged because of an inferior process.

Of course is you are being held back by your foundry partner (TSMC) in this case, you might decide to take the risk because the reward could be very large.

Seems like it, plus apple is wanting low power, not high performance has tsmc focusing on low power chips.
 
Only 176Gbps bandwidth? I highly doubt this thing will compete with a 280/280X at >HD resolutions... Unless they've done some serious architecture magic to make the card SIGNIFICANTLY faster per clock..

About that.. AMD released a new ref 7950 boost awhile back that only Sapphire sold and I think it was called 3L or 4L as the first 7950 and Boost models was 2L.. no water blocks fit the 3L as the design is different but they used faster ram on the 3L which does 1500Mhz and the gpu seems to be around 1100Mhz+

The R9-280 Dual X that Sapphire sells now is that same 3L card with better cooling as I have one and it's setting at 1100/1500 which is 288Gb/sec so I really can't see this new card Tonga taking down the new designed 3L R9-280 which most don't know exist with that much bus width.
