I was wondering if this made a difference?

I was thinking I could put together a few boxen to run headless w/ some x2 chips on the cheap.

I would go Intel if its possible.
Anything based on the C2* CPU will fold a lot better than an X2 CPU.
Best one at the moment is probably the Q6600.

Right now, anyone who go with AMD (get a new one, not those who already run them before) is a fool so get Intel with a Core-based CPU, not the crappy Netburst ones.

 
E2160's and E4500's will out fold a comparable priced X2 anyday.

I was a huge AMD fan. Not purchased Intel since before Socket A.

Sadly WU are WU and points is points.

Intel. And a E2160 OC-ed to the hilt can push good PPD

 
For reference, my Brisbane X2@3.0Ghz does about 1368PPD on the fast 1760 point work units. My C2D E6400@3.4Ghz would do over 2300PPD on the same work unit. My E6400 had twice the cache as the X2 and that makes a bit of a difference, but the Core2 architecture is much more efficient.

I believe a couple people that have/had E2xxx series Allendales overclocked to 2.8Ghz were matching or barely outproducing my X2@3.0Ghz. I believe they have the same amount of cache as my Brisbane X2 and yet they still fold faster.

The best "value" for a folding system right now is one based off of the Q6600. It's not the cheapest setup, but it is the best overall value if you are building a new folding box.

If you already have some X2s, load up the SMP client on them and let them run. They may not be as fast as Intel's Core2 line, they still put out decent points. I personally would not purchase an X2 system for folding only as the Core2 line is more efficient for this task.

 
AMD has been a poor folding choice since June of 06 when the Core 2s were released. Since then it's been an intel dominated house.

It's 2008 and C2D came out in 2006. You can spare me a few months or less if you want to include engineering samples that leaked over at XS. :D

Fair enough. Sheesh, AMD, it's been (almost) two years already. We need more competition!
 
I see, I've never even used AMD(Intel fanboy).

It seems instead of spending $400 on 2 AMD rigs, I would be better served w/ 1 Q6600 rig.

I'm going to wait another month, I got a hunch the quads are going to dip below $200. :D

For the first 5 years of [H]ard Folding, it was crazy to NOT have a farm full of AMD CPUs. Durons spaking high priced P$ (P4 for those that don't remmber...funny it's the same key on the keyboard). Now, you are correct. Q6600 FTW.

I'm going to wait another month, I got a hunch the quads are going to dip below $200. :D

April 20 ;) And look for the Q6700 to be around the 300 mark.
