Nvidia will have to drop prices sooner or later, the sooner they do, the more of the market they have a potential of getting before the 6xxx come out. For them its a balance, loose money now by dropping prices, or loose money later when people won't buy the 4xx series, because the 6xxxs are out.
The 460 is good for most people who game below 1920x1080 so thats a fair share of the market and Nvidia can grab many of them if the 460 seems like a bargain. If they wait too long, many of those will go the 6xxx way and Nvidia looses.
Of course...this is assuming ATI keeps the same pricing levels as before (6770 for <$200)

i thought i read that the 67xx series is out in october and the 68xx is out in november before.
personally, i'm more annoyed that a new vid card is out. I bought mine but the stupid etailer screwed me over and waited 3 months to get me a working one.. bah!

Yeah, I don't know what the hell Nvidia is doing. It's like they completely forgot that the 1GB cards even exist. As the HD 5850 can be had for $260 out the door, and as little as $210 after MIR, it's time for Nvidia to act (before the awesome GTX 460 1GB launch momentum is completely lost to obscurity).
I'm glad I bought my 1GB card at release for $230 - right now, they're a terrible value, but at the same time the 768MB cards are just too memory-starved for some people to bite.
I'm sorry, but please show me a game/settings where the 460 w/o SLI that the 1GB card can run a playable frame rate on that the 768GB can not.

I gave up waiting and bought one anyway.
There seem to be some pretty mixed reviews. Some sites say go 1GB, others say 768MB is fine.
I went on the side of caution and picked up the 1GB. Got it for $175 without a MIR as an open box. Hopefully, the HD 6770 won't have me regretting my purchase.

See that setting 1650x1080 with 4xAA? It's arguably playable on the GTX 460 1GB! And if that's not fast enough for you, you have options: either overclock the card to 800 MHz (pretty easy and very high success rate), or drop the AA to 2x.
The 768MB card is screwed no matter what you try. You just can't run the 768MB card in some games with all the eye candy the GTX 460 GPU is capable of powering. And don't even think about 1920 with that anemic memory - the 1GB card can take it, but the 768MB can't.
If you don't play demanding games or you don't care about AA, the GTX 460 768MB is a decent purchase. But it will not perform well in future games, as there are already games on the market that can saturate it's local ram - so that makes it an iffy purchase.

First off, you call 24FPS average playable on a first person shooter?
Also, you realize the difference in the frame rates is from the difference in the raster operators count between the two models, and not the amount of memory in it. Furthermore, the first time you see the memory become an issue on those graphs is at 1920x1200 with 4x AA, something the 1GB model can't run, unless you call 18.3FPS playble. Your link actually proves my point, by the time you hit high enough AA to warrant the extra memory, you don't have enough processing power to drive it.

I wouldn't go over 1680x1050 with 768MB, especially once you start cranking the AA.Anything over 1920x1200 is going to leave you wanting the 1GB. If you don't think you'll go even a little over 1080p, this generation, than go with the 768mb. Otherwise, the 1GB is required.
Also, multi-monitor gaming is where its at.
Yep, AMD keeps nailing these hard launches, I'm impressed. NDA expires Oct. 21 and parts should be available in huge quantities that day, as far as I've heard.

Hmm, it seems like a bad idea if this is true to delay your own launch till October 21st if your reasoning is 'Let's see what nVidia has up its sleeves and nVidia's new pricing' b/c then your playing more reactively and less proactive. It doesn't seem wise from a business approach. Let's let our competitor do something first and get credit and then we'll copy whatever they do?

According to the article they may not have product until November or later. So this could really hurt them as far as holiday sales.

That's a misinformed article based on old rumors from a site that is always a few weeks behind the rumor mill.
67xx will be released mid October, 68xx will be released in November and if demand is not too high for 68xx then the dual chip 69xx will come in December.

The whole point is that there has never been any legitimate source anywhere that said products were being released on Oct. 12. That has always been the day of the press event (much like the aircraft carrier thing last year). The launch date and NDA lifting has been Oct. 21. If that changes, that will be something, until then, it's just reporters not having a clue.

I find it funny that there can be a "delay" for a product that hasn't been announced, or has ever had an "official" launch date announced. I've seen this before, and people will come up with all kinds of conspiracy theories. There is still wrong info in that article.

(anyway, back on topic, I suppose).Not a big deal, but what will be released is Northern Islands, Southern Islands comes (hopefully) winter next year on the 28nm process.
My guess as to the delay is that AMD/ATI realized that their 6770 competes directly with their own 5850 and 5870 (their business department didn't really understand the specs until they got leaked and all the tech forums said it) so they decided they'd rather take an extra month to clear inventories before the release. It makes sense from a business perspective but fans will obviously be disappointed. I'll stand on a limb and say I think 67x0s, 68x0s, and 6970 will all be released before Christmas, perhaps separated by 2 weeks in a one two three punch that will create frenzy in the news for the 2 months leading up to Christmas.
