quick aside: The cost of manufacturing WinXP and Win2K3 is pretty clost to 0. Opterons are server products, so the margin is pretty big, and once again, manufacturing is vrey cheap in comparison to the development costs.

I really doubt that anyone is loosing money on this. They might be earning less than if this had sold retail, but there is no 'red ink' on the bundles.

As to 'buying too many' I definetely agree with that problem.

From that perspective I'd agree. However, considering the fixed value asigned to the products its still somewhat of a loss. While AMD is likely not loosing any money, someone probably is. One of the sponser companies likely bought everything from the other vendors at a certain price and the bundles are being sold. Of course the pressing of XP and Server 2003 disks is nothing, I wouldn't say that it doesn't cost them something. There would be a fixed value to the software.

Tyan has included a $300+ motherboard, and the best price on the Opteron 246's is $301 on Pricewatch. I'd say that they probably aren't loosing too much. Cost on the processor is probably around $200 before the distributors get their hands on them.

No matter how things do work out economically, it would be foolish for them to provide too many of these bundles. At some point it does more harm than good.

Actually, I was going to buy both, even arranged for my dad to pick up the cost of the server, and yes, we were going to build one, as we are both computer consultants, and DO refer people to spend $$$ on products, in significant amounts... in addition to building our own systems.

I went to order, and didn't see the button, came back here and saw the "sold out" email posted above.

Decided not to go... mildly disappointed as well, as while I WOULD like to see the media OS in action, and could use a 2.0 USB hub, I feel that the least I can do to express my annoyance with their poor planning is not attend.

completely agree with that. If they dumped millions of bundles out there, it'd seriously affect their bottom line. Considering that some/ many ethusiasts (me included) would buy that dual-opteron machine for the advertised $500, yet surely not spend the retail value of >$1700, they were able to extract some extra profit by selling it to us below our 'reserve price'.

the bottom line is, I am sad that I might end up NOT getting either bundle and I guess I am rationalizing why they should sell it to me ;) :p

They changed the wording on the site to:

Haven't ordered a bundle yet?

Due to the popularity of the AMD/Microsoft Tech Tour 2005 Desktop and
Server Bundles, we are currently out of stock. Please check back in a
few days for availability - we are working with our partners to increase
the number of bundles available. Your patience is appreciated.

It sounds more like there will be more made available

i just looked at the site, and couldn;t even find this... aww looks like i might be too late

Heh, all these pesimists talking about why it would be bad for them to provide more... looks like the optimists might win here.

My take is that they are not "giving product away" or "losing money", they are investing. Investing in what? 64 bit. By getting all the enthusiests on 64 bit, they can work out a lot of bugs that regular users might not be as good at, so that it works better for users later on down the road when 64 bit is the standard desktop OS. Sounds smart to me.

so we're the guinea pigs? and we're paying to be guinea pigs?

I just got back from the tech tour in Dallas. They announced that due to popular and overwhelming demand of the bundles, they will be offering a chance for people who actually attended the shows and didn't get the bundle, another opportunity to do so in a few weeks.

I did pick up mine, and I am typing this on the my dual Opteron system.

what does that mean?
I thought you had to pre-order the bundle anyways...are you saying that some people showed up and they couldn't pick up their pre-paid bundles? Or are you refering to people who weren't able to pre-order becuase of the sell out and still attended the show?

on a side note: anyone with the desktop bundle know if the asus board has the noisy northbrige fan problem (which has been reported...early reviews) or if it has been fixed on these boards?

Any more news about the possibility of filling more orders? I'm signed up for Sunnyvale, and I have not yet purchased an airline ticket to fly there. Thanks.

I would think its means that if you attended the show and missed the pre-order (pre-order people like him got theres) you may get a chance to buy a bundle in a few weeks.

you can buy the bundle's in a few weeks and have them shipped to you.

just came back from the dallas show, won myself a opteron 246 there, fricking crazy.

nice, do you still have to attend the show? any shipping charges?

Yes, you have to attend the show. They only said Atlanta, Dallas and one other city would be able to do this though. Anyone remember what the other city was?

Hopefully more news will be out soon. I check that link twice a day waiting for more. The sad part is what put me over the top and made me decide that I wanted it was the Windows 2003 Server x64...... We shall see how things go.

So your one of the Opteron 246 winners. I saw you guys get them last night.

Anyway, for people who missed the pre-order and actually ATTENDED the show, you will get another chance to purchase the bundles. If you did not attend but signed up, you are SOL.

For those of us who did pre-order the bundles, we got to get ours last night. In fact my home PC is running off of those Opterons on a Tyan K8WE right now.

That is sweet... All I got was a Large! Ferrari shirt that my g/f won at the ATL show... it does actually fit ok though.

The other city is Houston.

I take this means that your K8WE worked out.

I'm still waiting for my replacement to arrive; sadly I'll be at my girlfriend's this Friday when it and the 7800GTX arrive.

Oh well.

(N.E.)

You're sad that you have to be at your girlfriend's house when your computer hardware arrives?

Yes the K8WE worked VERY well. I am going to install XP64 later this week. Maybe tonight. What was cool is that the system worked with my existing install of Windows that was done on my A8N-SLi Deluxe/A64 3800+ combo.

Windows re-detected all my hardware, I had to reload my sound and video and the thing worked perfectly. Literally after dropping in the procs, the system was fully operational in 10 minutes or less.

I had done all the hardware work before hand. So literally I dropped in the CPU's and I was off and running.

well...kind of. I don't get to use my hardware until Tuesday now...

She doesn't have broadband, or showers.

She does have other assets...but the broadband & showers is a major detractor.

Also, Frag...I don't remember if I asked or not, but what HSFs are you using? Probably not those Sonic Towers I've got...

Dual CoolerMaster Hyper 8's. They're heatpipe HSF's with 92mm fans. They are fairly quiet and fit the K8WE fine. Its real tight around the bottom of CPU socket 2. But otherwise.

You also have to be carefull how you orient the clips and the heatpipes themselves. Everything has to point away from the memory slots. They are quiet and provide good cooling.

Finally what kicks the most ass is I finally got my SLi bridge for my Tyan K8WE today.

I'll need it for my 6800GT's now, and then my 7800GTX's when I order those.

I wish my SLI bridge would hurry up and get here...I ordered it back on June 6th.

Oh well; I only bought one 7800GTX...I'll probably stick with just that until UT2007 comes out or another game makes me need SLI. I'd mention BF2...but that's a rather sore subject seeing as how that's why I'm no longer able to use my NecessaryEvil account. :p

I should have gone with cheaper heatsinks than my Sonic Towers...I blame that on having purchased the HSF before the CPU...I planned on cooling an OC'd X2 rather than Opterons...

NecessaryEvil! What happened? :(

Yeah, NecessaryEvil was such a cool name. Sure, Marduk is the slayer of Tiamat, but the other name was so recognizable. :(

Marduk may be the username I have to use from now on, but I'm still NecessaryEvil at heart...and all the other forums I frequent :)

I just lack the recognizability, respect(?), :cool:ness, and the 11,500 posts that that name had with it.

YGPMs, btw.

So what did everyone get at the Houston one yesterday...

I was at the Houston show yesterday. I got the desktop and server bundle. The Tyan server board that I recieved was a Thunder K8SE which has one PCIe x16 slot to my surprise!

that board would make my day!

That's not fair!

if I'd had got a K8SE, I'd have likely skipped the K8WE.

Wait...no I wouldn't of. Nevermind. The reason I went with the K8WE instead of the K8SE was due to the amount of USB 2.0 ports...

Anyway, congrats on the better board!

I will definitely keep the motherboard if it's a K8SE. I needed PCI-Express for my videocard. I was about to spend the $450 on the K8WE :(

I went with the K8WE because it had two x16 PCI-E sockets and fully supported SLi.

I was going to do the exact same thing. Sell the original board and buy a K8WE but now looks like this one's a keeper. Hope you future attendees that preordered get the same board I got. I'm crossing my fingers for you guys!

The K8WE is badass though.
