AMD Stock Heatsink question

I've googled it, and it keeps recommending heatsinks and stuff rather then actually answering my question.


Does a stock AMD Heat sink fit in a 2U server case?


I know the intels do and because of their design they can prolly get better flow because they are open sided.



I'm building a few 2U systems for my rack for general learning and testing and I can build AMD based systems cheaper.


simple definite yes or no is all I ask..

Yes, stock coolers are under 80mm high.

what CPU and chasis?

air flow in 1/2U is engineered to flow across, you will have some head room, but the air flow will not be as a top mounted fan/HS is designed for..there will not be a one-couple inches to chasis cover. cooling will not be as efficient as side mounted fan. you cold mod them, to be side mount.

how would say cutting a small grill directly effect it? i know cpu would like the cooler air but i don't want to kill flow of the whole case.

i was just using those cheap norco 2u microatx cases

My Case, 2U, forces air from the front to the back, blowing over the CPU heatsink in the process.

that's how mine is too, 80mm fans up front push air back through the case, it's only about 13 or so inches deep so it's not a big case.

nothing I'll put into it is power hungry or put out a lot of heat. I was going for some low power regors and call it a day

I wouldn't even worry about being able to stay cool. If you really want to keep them chilly, look into getting the stock amd heatpipe cooler that comes with the quads or older 90nm cpu's. The newer ones just come with an aluminum hsf for 95w TDP and lower.

phenom I and older = aluminum block

phenom II = 4 heatpipe heatsinks

I like to add that the Phenom I quads (black editions) came with the 4 heatpipe heatsinks. The regular quads came with the dinky aluminum block.

fans from a stock hs could be easily modded to side mounted fan. but you could always look to just buy the stock or an aftermarket that uses this design. I know that a top mounted fan in a 2U chasis will have the amount of air it can pull/push limited by the area available above the fan.

examine your heatsinks and determine how to mount the fans to blow across instead of down or buy heatsinks that do. its not gonna be chilly or even cool in a 2U, so efficient and effective is important when you start rack mounting.

i have seen AM2/3 coolers for 2U starting around $25...but i also like the challenge of a mod project, just nutty that way

Are you sure there buddy? Like I said about <95w TDP = aluminum.

I notice any new CPUs after the X3 720BE are using newer aluminum block that the X2 550BE has.

Phenom II X2 and X3 also gets the aluminum block. As of now the only ones that has the 4 heatpipe hsf are:

-Phenom I X4 Black Editions
-Phenom II X4 Black Edtions
