Six weeks from now, the world will get the first retail Radeon X2900 XTX

Late yesterday DailyTech was briefed on the final details for the upcoming R600 retail specifications, just in time for everyone to go on vacation for Chinese New Year.

AMD's guidance claims R600 will feature 700 million transistors. By comparison, the Radeon X1900 series R580 GPU incorporated 384 million transistors into its design; the half-generation before that, R520, only featured 320 million.

As disclosed by DailyTech earlier this year, the GPU features a full 512-bit memory interface with support for GDDR3 and GDDR4. R580 was also similar in this regard as it supported GDDR3 and GDDR4.

On March 30, 2007, AMD will initially debut the R600 as the ATI Radeon X2900 XTX in two separate configurations: one for OEMs and another for retail. The OEM version is the full length 12" card that will appear in high-end systems.

ATI guidance claims the X2900 XTX retail card comes as a two-slot, 9.5" design with a vapor chamber cooler. Vapor chambers are already found on high-end CPU coolers, so it would be no surprise to see such cooling on a high-end GPU either. The OEM version of the card is a 12" layout and features a quiet fan cooler.

1GB of GDDR4 memory is the reference configuration for Radeon X2900 XTX. Memory on the reference X2900 XTX cards was supplied by Samsung.

Approximately one month later, the company will launch the GDDR3 version of the card. This card, dubbed the Radeon X2900 XT, features 512MB of GDDR3 and lower clock frequencies than the X2900 XTX. The X2900 XT is also one of the first Radeons to feature heatpipes on the reference design.

AMD anticipates the target driver for X2900 XT to be Catalyst 8.36. WHQL release of the X2900 XTX drive will appear around the Ides of March.

Radeon X2900 will feature native CrossFire support via an internal bridge interface -- there is no longer a need for the external cable found on the Radeon X1000 series CrossFire. There is no Master card, as was the case with other high-end CrossFire setups. Any Radeon X2900 can act as the Master card.

A much anticipated feature, native HDMI, will appear on all three versions of Radeon X2900.

Two 8-pin (2x4) VGA power connectors are featured on Radeon X2900, but the connectors are also backwards compatible with 6-pin power supply cables.

AMD claims the R600 launch will be a hard launch -- availability is expected to be immediate. Board partners will be able to demonstrate R600 at CeBIT 2007 (March 15 - 21), but the only available cards will be reference designs.

Why was there such discrepancy with the board layouts and designs up until now? An ATI insider, who wished to remain nameless, states "The original Quad-Stealth design is what we build the R600 on: GDDR4, full-length and dual-slot cooling. As the silicon further revised, [ATI] took up several alternative designs which eventually included GDDR3 and heatpipes into the specification. The release cards demonstrate the versatility of R600 in each of these unique setups."

Very Nice ;)
Im going to have to bug my sponsor for 2x of these bad boys :p

and not give up until i got one ;)

there is no G81 or GeForce 8900 series

Scary... would a Corsair HX520/620W PSU be incapable of running this properly? It sure sounds it... . Nothing too new in here, just what we've heard before (1GB, 512-bit, etc., huge power draw bordering on absurd, only new thing is that it'll actually come out as a hard launch around the first day of April/last day of March, though considering its delays it really needed to). A shame only the top top flagship will be available at that time, though. I'd be half-tempted to sell or return my GTS if this card looked like it would be feasibly usable, but the power draw just looks to be too much for me. I'll be damned if I'm upgrading my power supply for one generation from one company.

When I read "6 weeks" I figured this was an April Fool's Joke :p

The card looks great! If I ever get more than a 20" monitor I'd buy one...

RMAA? Why would I want RMAA?

I assume it's either a new way of doing antialiasing (by rendering the red subpixels first, then applying the antialiasing to the whole image, or something? I don't know LOL!), or a joke.

Golden - As I understand it, the new 8 pin connectors are part of a new PCI-E standard. So you can flow with technology, or try and fight it.

The extra 2 pins are a ground and 12v sense. Notice they said it is backward compatible with 6 pin. :) I see no reason why that corsair PSU wouldn't work.

What exactly is Vapor Chamber cooling? Can someone post an actual image of such a cooling system?

Whoa! I did have some concerns about R600 not bringing new features to the table, but I have faith once more. DX10.1 sure sounds great and is sweet for people who are looking for future proof card. Looks like AMD is holding some aces on their sleeves, which is nice for the geek community :D

I'm getting this card as soon as it hits 500$.

BTW....who wants to bet Corsair and the rest release a new PSU on the around end-March/April....or around CeBIT. :D

The title is a little misleading, since it really doesn't say anything about "final specs". There's only the confirmation of the 512 bit memory bus and 1 GB of VRAM. I guess we'll need to wait a bit longer, before all the rumors are cleared.

Anyway, I don't understand the purpose of RMAA. I'm curious to see what exactly are the advantages and/or uses for it.

agreed

heh, that Red Mask AA thing was a joke and it appeared on xtremesystems.

And no its not a dx10.1 chip. the dx10.1 specs aren't even finalized as of yet at least to my knowledge.

It is amazing what some of you will believe from posts on a forum.

That's no lie. It gets to a point where the initial rumor/post wasn't so bad. It's the extrapolation of that, that becomes crazy. haha!

Okay now I have a card to work with.. now I just need a good MB and another $2000 to build my new rig. :(

so there just releasing the ultra high end by itself? then a whole month later releasing the high end card? hmmmm....

They probably have different release dates because the big OEM cards use an early silicon revision and retail is using a newer one that they haven't stocked enough of yet.

As for AA there does appear to be an improved adaptive AA coming but it looks like it should apply to all x1k series cards and above, not just R600. It's actually in the drivers right now but apparently still being tested since there are some bugs when it gets enabled.

I never knew the DX10.1 spec was finalized either. Of course that doesn't mean that R600 can't support the spec or will be capable of supporting whatever makes it into the spec. I was under the impression programmable AA and multicore support were the main features of DX10.1 which it's possible R600 could support.

You're going have to wait on Crysis until 3rd quarter of this year.

The card seems powerful indeed. But I'm worried about power requirements.

I feel like my Flight Simulator X could put it through the ringer but then I still need a new CPU and twice as much memory as I currently have. *sigh* I guess I need to look at a rebuild...a new PSU and new cpu thus leading to a new memory type....and a new motherboard....yuck. Damn AMD for ditching socket 939...

I believed the whole RMAA thing in the beginning, that tells you something about engineers and such like me. The good thing is that I can admit my own lack of knowledge and stupidity, it means Iam not a total moron yet :D

/starts selling off his 8800GTX's in SLI for X2800XTX's RMAA!!!!

Also can I us RMAA on my 2D desktop?? :p

Once I find out if the AF is as good as the 8800's, mine will be on the for sale forum! :D

Great part of buying NV products is people will pay near retail just to have it~!
