AMD PII @Newegg

So how long do any of you think it will take for these to drop around c2q price range?

Exactly what I was waiting for! Picked up a 940, a DFI 790FX and 4 Gigs of Dominator 1066 with next day shipping

I'm going to wait for the Propus cores. I just don't see these as worthwhile at the current price point for now anyway.

Fresh and new, no one even reviewed it yet. It's still recent so it will probably come down in price given the right amount of time I believe :)

Propus might be junk with no L3 cache. Then of course there's also possibility that it will be below 100$ which would give it some nice price to perfermance ratios :D

Yeah, those PH2's w/o L3 cache may be interesting and they just may OC pretty good. Should be good for average use and gaming, and perhaps multitasking doing business apps. and home apps. I don't know, but considering the good performance of OC'd 5000+ BE, 5400+ BE, 6000+ etc. K8's the new PH2's w/o 3 cahe may be OK and right for the budget at businesses and homes. A decent performing X4 and X3 for under or very near $100 would be interesting.

im waiting for the price to come down so i can replace my P1 and sell it to a friend to upgrade from his 5200.

any one know how well thee 920 overclocks? im assuming not good since theres no unlocked multiplier.

There are quite a few screenshots from one user who tested at 335-350mhz HT so overclocking with locked processors is still quite possible. Phenom II 920 has a 14x multiplier so reasonable air/water overclocks would be in the range of 240-280mhz HT. The shots linked above at 3.6+ghz are with 260mhz HT and the HT Link multiplier appears to have been left at the default 9x without issue.

the combo of 920 and Biostar 790gx is $295, pretty good price. a Q9400+P45 or X48 will cost over $400

These things are out two weeks early, prices are jacked up a bit, intel has yet to adjust their prices to compensate. If I remember correctly, these are supposed to be able to keep up with Core i7 as long as they're clocked about 200MHz faster than the intel part, which means the current i7 prices are way too high.

I imagine in a few months these prices will drop dramatically. Considering the cheapest i7 blows all else out of the water for 300 bucks.

I want to drop one into my M3A system for a quick easy upgrade, will wait a bit though.

I'm waiting for....

1. Intel price cuts
1a. Price cut on DDR3 RAM

2. AM3 versions of the Phenom II

From what I've read intel is going to drop the Q9650 to Q9550 level, Q9550 to Q9400 price levels, and Q9400 to Q8200 and Q6600 is going to be EOLed.

Anyways, Q9650 for $320, yeah!

Exactly!!! All the prices of all the CPU's should drop a bit. :)

Pros: Theyyyrree Back!!!! In Every test that ACUALY counts its trumps the 920 I7 at higher resolutions (WHERE YOU WANT TO PLAY WHERE EVERYONE PLAYS) This chip was not designed to TOUCH i7 920 and it beat it.

Lol....

Geez... don't these people any anything else to do besides giving feedbacks on products they didn't buy.

No way that is true, a Phenom2 @ 3.8GHz can't beat a Core2Quad @ 3.2GHz so there is no way it can touch the i7, so you are very misinformed.

I'd be interested to see what the benchmarks would look like if the PII had the same amount of ram as the Intel systems.

Geez, look who is talking and making a feedback on a feedback!!!!

Are you trying to be funny? Seems like a bad attempt.

How is my post a feedback compare to newegg which rates a product. Unless you fail elementary school and can't see the difference then I understand where your coming from.

Right, and you are saying this because Kyle said it too?
It's bullshit.

Also, I'd be interested in a test that ues ram at the speed the phenom was made for. 1066 mhz.

Oh wait, there are sites that are not inept at reviewing.
www.techreport.com
http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/2009/01/08/amd-phenom-ii-x4-940-and-920-review/1

Why don't you download the tests(did you RTFA?) and try for your self?!
And don't come back if you are clueless to what I am talking about n00b.

I think many users here are inept. If you claim that Kyle is inept then you're inept. Because the issue is not Kyle or [H]ardOCPs testing methods but rather the conclusions derived from the results.

You claim that 2GB vs. 4GB makes a difference. Well under certain games it does. However Kyle's results mirror those of other sites (Techreport etc).

So let's use some logic here.

[H]ardOCPs results mirror other sites results (the data). The only difference is the conclusions derived from these results (viewing the data).

Therefore one could formulate some conclusions.

1. Kyle is an Intel Fan: Well unfortunately past evidence, including Kyle's affection for previous high performing AMD setups invalidates this conclusion.

2. Kyle is a performance junky: Ding Ding Ding.

The only logical conclusion is that Kyle is a TRUE enthusiast. You're NOT a full fledged enthusiast if you don't participate in the hobby which enthuses you to a higher than normal degree. The dictionary defines an enthusiast as: a person filled with enthusiasm: as a: one who is ardently attached to a cause, object, or pursuit <a sports car enthusiast> b: one who tends to become ardently absorbed in an interest,

Kyle is most definitely falls into the category of an individual who has access to all of the hardware (that which enthuses him) he would like. That being said, a low performing processor which even in price is not that competitive does NOT enthuse him. He would logically see it as a "loser".. or "the loser" in a test.

So yes. The inept individuals are those who attack [H]ardOCP based on the conclusions derived. If the data was completely skewed then you would have a case. But it isn't.

Case closed.

And to get back on topic those P2s are looking mighty fine, anyone know when the dual core variants are due?

The case isn't closed anymore now than it was in you other failed thread. It takes a little too much confidence in oneself to assume everything one said is automatically true even before the rebuttal..

Yet again you've magically transferred your personal concept of what an "enthusiast" is to this topic, and somehow applied it to only those people who lust after the absolute best hardware available regardless of cost. That is not what it takes to be an enthusiast and your definition just proved it even if you chose to interpret it differently. I consequently find it insulting that you feel the need to negatively stereotype other [H] users so. So really, do you want the 99% of the population that can't afford the most expensive processors on the market to just leave this forum or shut up? Is that the kind of [H] we want? 'Cause that is seriously what we are talking about here if we allow members to bash other members simply because they set their sights a little bit lower...

Kyle's review conclusions are perfectly valid when you ignore cost. When you limit your scope of data to the competing Intel processors within the same price range and factor in the price per performance benefits to those 'non-enthusiasts', who already own AM2+ hardware, the picture changes more than you are willing to accept. I don't know what this data is people think they have seen that says putting $235-$275 into system and getting a PHII to 3.8+ghz is a bad investment. I have certainly never been depressed over whether or not I could gain 5%-10% by completely rebuilding my system at what I consider to be a massive cost. I certainly hope to never fall into that way of thinking during my lifetime. No matter how many times you regurgitate the idea that buying a new processor, even the lower priced i7 920, plus a new motherboard, plus new RAM can equate with putting a Phenom II into a respectable gaming machine for a huge boost in performance at a fraction of the cost, it simply doesn't equate in my mind. At the very least you could dig a little into yourself and maybe accept that those who came to positive conclusions from Phenom II performance are just as right as the Intel-thumpers.

Yours truly,
a Non-Enthusiast
