How are the AMD quad cores for folding?
They're cheaper than the Q6600s so thats attractive

There's no logical way they can excel in folding while getting killed in everything else.

 
First find me a Phenom that will do a >1Ghz OC

Then on the rare chance you get it up over 3Ghz it will still get spanked by a similar clocked Q6600.

I was a AMD fanboy for years.... They dropped the Ball, and they need to pick it back up quickly.

It's probably a fluke but noteworthy nevertheless. Might be a sign of improvements with the die. However, I totally agree that AMD dropped the ball big time with Barcelona. It could cost them everything in the long run unless someone buys them out or invests heavily in the company.

 
I might eventually pick up one of the B3 Phenom quads if the price is right. I have an AM2 X2 system cruising along at 3Ghz on a motherboard which will take a Phenom with no trouble. If I can get a cheap upgrade like that I might do it. I would hope that it would overclock better than the current Phenoms, though. I've been spoiled by the overclockability of the Intel Core2 series and can't justify a Phenom that won't overclock well.

yeah i would agree with price range of Q6600,
also Phenom doesnt respond too well on dual winSMP.
 
The only hope with the Phenoms is with the 2619 units which is really memory hungry. I think the integrated controller might help level the floor against a Q6600.

 
AMD needs to drop the prices, take them down to the 130-140 range. Then they will be a value.

I'm not sure if they can do that with what their yields/margin looks like.

Anyway, I will test with some DDR2-1000 2x2GB Mushkin Redline as soon as NCIX get them back in stock. If the extra bandwidth help a lot with those WU, we have the answer.

Penryn based processors might perform better with the 2619s as well. They have more cache.

where have you found a Q6600 for $200 besides Microcenter? :confused:

We'll have to see how it folds from the guy above (with the extra bandwidth {ram})
 
I've hear tell if 189 at Frys and I have gotten 2 Q6600's for $200 at Microcenter.

I agree, I do want to know how the memory preforms.

While I would really like to buy direct (the price is great), it's limited to a US address. I'm in Canada unfortunately. However, Greg of Mushkin said there will be more stock coming to NCIX any day now (probably by next monday). When this happen, I will rape my CC once more :D

 
AMD_RULES, the Q6600 will have a price cut in 2-3 weeks to 224$ so it's not impossible to see them around 200$ at most.

Sounds good. I would still like to see how the AMD Phenoms do with folding. Hopefully AMD does a price drop on the Phenoms as well :)

 
So far I haven’t updated to the new beta beta SMP client so I haven’t had my testicles tethered with 2619’s yet.

That said if you stop in at:

You will see again Stanford seems to have no parity in points, in spite of their claims otherwise.

If as they claim they run a given unit through given equipment to calculate folding times and use their formula to calculate points very little on that page makes sense. Every time it comes up as a subject on the community forums 7im or whoever gets ticked off and decides to lower the point structure.

Yes, I know and am the first to admit it’s the WUs that count and I too fold for the science. The other side of that is, if this were a pay plan from which we derived our living and fed our families no doubt we would all be working elsewhere.

We pay for better gear to provide them with a free service, its not like the points are dollars coming out of Stanford’s budget.

Ok, sorry, to those of you who are new this is my semi annual rant on programs run by liberals with an entitlement mentality;)
