First off i would like to say that i'm new to this forum,so hello to everyone and thanks in advance for you input.

I'm planning on building a new desktop and i'm torn between building AMD or Intel. I will be using it for playing games like Call of Duty, BattleField, Splinter Cell Conviction, etc... I will also use it for normal things like music compilations, downloads, surfing internet, things like that, basically multitasking, but not very heavily.

2) Budget: $600
3) Where do you live?
Florida
4) What exact parts do you need for that budget?
CPU, Motherboard, Graphics card, RAM, psu
6) Will you be overclocking?
YES!
7) What size monitor do you have and/or plan to have?
25" full 1080p Hanspree
9) What features do you need in a motherboard? RAID?
Must have SLI/Crossfire
10) Do you already have a legit and reusable/transferable OS key/license?
windows 7 64-bit

AMD build:
MotherBoard: GIGABYTE GA-890GPA-UD3H
CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 945 Deneb or Phenom II x4 955 (not sure which yet)
RAM: G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 4GB
GPU: XFX HD-577A-ZNFC Radeon HD 5770 (Juniper XT)

Intel build:
Same RAM and GPU as above
CPU: Intel Core i5-750 Lynnfield
Motherboard: EVGA P55 SLI 132-LF-E655-KR

i guess the rest of the parts are negligible. Basically i'm thinking AMD has more futurebility versus intel, since intel switches their sockets so often. I also know that the i-750 out performs both of the AMD cpus i have listed. there is always the x6, but i don't have money for that. i just want something thats going to be able to run games like those listed above without a hic-up.

Will i see a noticeable difference between the the i5 720 and x4 945 or 955 as far as basic multitasking? gaming?

thanks again for your help.

No, probably not. The AMD build should be cheaper as well, and, as you've noted, AMD is pretty good at making new processor lines backward compatible, which helps.

That said, HT is awesome and significantly helps with certain applications.

What is your budget?

i5 750 doesn't have HT

you could afford the 6 core then. http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.395941

Fill out the sticky for new builds once you have an overall budget figured out and folks will be able to help you better.

Do you know much about that motherboard? I know the OP and he is planning on xfire down the road with the 5770's but I see that the 870 only supports x16/x4 xfire. Do you know if it can split down to x8/x8? I wish I could find the article that tests the different bandwidths.

For the monitor listed in the OP's post the AMD rig would do just fine and will cost less.

yea, i'm leaning toward amd mainly for the price and the upgradability, i can always buy an x6 or x8 cpu without having to buy a new MB. plus the MB supports usb3.0 and sata 6, further enhancing the upgradability in the future

that out the way, what Graphics card do you guys recommend to run games like those in the OP? I plan on running crossfire eventually

The optimal card would be the HD 5850 as Casenard said. However your budget only allows for the HD 5770.

Something I see missing from both builds: What PSU will you be getting?

i havent decided on the psu just yet
Well to save us some time and trouble, I recommend these PSUs:
$90 - Corsair 650TX 650W PSU
$120 - Antec Truepower New TP750 Blue 750W PSU

what about running 2 5770 crossfire?

What about it? You mean running HD 5770 CF right off the bat or eventually?

Also you didn't answer this question:
8) When do you plan on building/buying the PC?

No point in doing all this research if you're planning on building the PC 2-3 months from now.

eventually. i'd just start with one for now. the 5850 is nice, but twice the price, cant afford that right now. but i figure i can run 2 5770 CF and be good.

i was looking at the same antec psu, a friend of mine suggested the same one. i'm planning to build this within 2 weeks. i'm ordering the MB and CPU this weekend. possibly the graphics card and the memory as well

Well post a final build list before you buy just in case.

Oh and you can save $10 by getting the GPU and RAM from this combo link:
$265 - XFX HD-577A-ZNFC Radeon HD 5770 1GB PCI-E Video Card + G.Skill Ripjaw Series F3-12800CL9D-4GBRL 2 x 2GB DDR3 1600 RAM Combo

ok tomorrow i'm going to order:

PSU:
Antec TruePower New TP-750 Blue 750W

CPU:
AMD Phenom II X4 945 Deneb 3.0GHz

MotherBoard:
GIGABYTE GA-890GPA-UD3H AM3 AMD 890GX

All from Newegg: $387.97

then next week i plan on ordering:

Vicedcard:
HD-577A-ZNFC Radeon HD 5770 (Juniper XT)

RAM:
G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 4GB XFX

and should be it. already have 2 hard drives, and dvd drives, but i plan on upgrading the dvd/cd drive. any all in one recommendations?

as far as performance goes...how does the Gskill eco perform? i know it runs at lower voltage, but does that hinder it's performance?

For only a little more, you can get the unlocked and easier to OC Phenom II 955 BE from this combo:
$285 - AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition CPU + GIGABYTE GA-890GPA-UD3H AM3 AMD 890GX SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 HDMI ATX AMD Motherboard

No it does not hinder performance with lower voltage. However the Eco is not worth it over the G.Skill Ripjaws since the lower latency means jack in real world apps and games.

If you don't want to deal with rebates, the Corsair 650TX 650W PSU recommended earlier is a better buy than the Antec TP-550 PSU.

worth the extra money for 200mhz? would it even matter, i'm going to OC the 945 anyway.

It's worth the money for the unlocked multiplier. The 945 does not have an unlocked multiplier so it will be harder to OC the 945. In addition to being easier to OC, the the 955 BE can also OC higher than the 945.

So yeah, considering that the combo deal (which means CPU AND Motherboard) is only $5 more than what you were originally gonna get, that extra $5 is worth it.

DONE!, couldn't wait so i ordered:
PSU:
CORSAIR CMPSU-650TX 650W

CPU:
AMD Phenom II X4 955 BE Deneb 3.2GHz

MotherBoard:
GIGABYTE GA-890GPA-UD3H AM3 AMD 890GX

All from Newegg: $364.97

Next step, Video card (probably just gonna go with the 1 5770 and add a second one later with CF), RAM, and DVD/CD combo drive.
